UNITED WE FIGHT.UNITED WE WIN.
REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
2 2017-2018 Report to the Community
The past year was one of transition for us. As we wished longtime executive director Barry Lessow our best when he retired from our staff this fall, we were grateful for the community’s steadfast support and, personally speaking, I was grateful for the warm welcome.
Throughout this transition I had the distinct privilege of engaging in conver-sation with you individually and collectively. Each opportunity reinforced the deeply rooted role United Way plays in this community — as a convener around issues, a mobilizer of partners around solutions, an advocate for our vulnerable citizens, and a supporter of vital nonprofit agencies which ensure our commu-nity members have the opportunity to learn more, earn more, and lead safer, healthier lives.
The transition did not slow us or our 25 member agencies down. Each agency met the stringent criteria for recertification and received funds to support their work and collaboration while United Way continued to find the gaps and to fill them. For example, we launched a pilot financial coaching program that connects individuals with professional mentors to achieve their goals and saw encouraging preliminary results.
Additionally two of our most popular programs are increasing their impact. Local sponsors of our Real Men Read program in Richland-Bean Blossom and Owen County Community Schools are providing support to expand into Eastern Greene Community School Corporation. A competitive national grant enabled promotion of MyFreeTaxes.com, assuring that even more people used this tool and the Free Community Tax Service to file their 2017 taxes. As the cherry on top, a panel of statewide United Way peers selected our campaign materials to win the “Best in Show” Golden Excellence in Media Award for mid-sized United Ways.
In these pages, numbers and stories combine to help demonstrate the impact we make when we work together — when we Live United. Whether you Give, Advocate, or Volunteer (or maybe all three!), you play a key role in directly improving people’s lives and, for that, we are ever grateful.
The year to come brings exciting things for both United Way and its member agencies. Matching grants for the community campaign (thanks to the gener-osity of the Lilly Endowment) will leverage crucial investments to early literacy and parental engagement initiatives, financial stability programs, and infor-mation and referral resources for those struggling with substance abuse. An updated Service Community Assessment of Needs (SCAN) report to further guide discussions of gaps and emerging needs will soon be released.
In unison with the superb work carried out each and every day by partners in support of our focus areas — Education, Earning Opportunities, and Essential Needs — we reaffirm our commitment to working together to address critical needs today and to reduce those needs in the future.
Because United, We Win —

“One of our residents was awarded a scholarship specifically for survivors of domestic violence. She was able to avoid any student debt with the help of her advocate at The Rise. She’s moved into permanent housing and is doing well in her second year at IU.” — Debra, Middle Way House Director
“Amethyst House saved my life.”
— Angie, in recovery
UNITED WE FIGHT. UNITED WE WIN.
“At VIM I got a complete physical exam, lab work-up, and a liver biopsy. I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, a disease where my immune system was attacking my own liver. Now, with the right care, I have the energy to take my kids to their many school and extracurricular events. I could never have done that before.” — Anna, a patient at Volunteers in Medicine
