Alaska United Ways

In Anchorage, help with vital services to address life’s challenges—including shelter, assistance with rent and utilities, food, healthcare and mental health services—accounted for 22,184 of the calls and resulted in more than 31,761 referrals.

When 80% of the factors for student success are outside of school, it only makes sense that it would take a community partnership to drive needed change.

This year the high school graduation rate increased by six points to 80.2%. Since shining the spotlight on graduation 10 years ago, the rate has climbed 21 points.

United Way of Anchorage drives the 90% by 2020 community initiative, which is helping to boost school attendance, academic growth, and graduation rates. More than 20,000 children benefited from activities and programs designed to help develop the skills, attitudes and behaviors that lead to success in school and life.

Imagine sleeping in your car in an Alaska winter. Now imagine you’re seven years old.

This year no child has been reported sleeping outside in the coldest months of the year. This marks the third winter in a row we’ve met our goal.

Eight years ago too many families were left out in the cold. United Way spearheaded a partnership that put into place a revolving cold weather emergency shelter system with local churches. Once families are safe and warm, additional personalized connections are made to get them back on their feet.

Access to healthcare helps to keep kids on track in school and adults productive at work. It’s one of the reasons United Way continues to assist individuals to enroll in health insurance, contributing to a 7% drop in the number of uninsured.

This year, 90,064 individuals received health education, 26,079 received health screenings and 18,016 were provided health care services.

By igniting innovative partnerships to help Anchorage house-holds increase their income and save for the future, United Way enables more families to improve their circumstances.

Free tax preparation services for this tax year saved 5,132 Anchorage residents an estimated $1,024,400 in tax prep frees and delivered an estimated $7.5 million in tax refunds.

Of the 2,645 Anchorage residents who completed a workforce skills development program, 42% attained employment and/or increased their income.

Board of DirectorsThe United Way Board of Directors sets the compass for our focus and direction. They are volunteers, Anchorage community members just like you, committed to improving our community.
