A letter from our presidentOne of my favorite inspirational sayings is “Strength

doesn’t come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.”

Our organization continues to show incredible strength. Strength of character, strength of resolve, strength of knowledge, strength of experience, and strength in compassion.

“If we want a strong community, we need a strong United Way.”As a volunteer since 1994, I can confidently say that we have a strong United Way. That strength was evident in 2019 as we worked together to do things we once thought were not possible.

I want to thank our office staff, board, campaign cabinet and volunteer base for an incredible year. I want to congratulate our partner agencies for their many achievements and pledge our loyalty to you for many years to come.

Finally, I want to welcome our new Executive Director Jeremy Wingerter, who I know you will all love to work with. Jeremy is an incredibly talented professional leader who will do great things for our community, but only if we support him. Please get to know him, challenge him and assist him with our mission to Make Here Happen.

I am honored to serve this organization and your support this past year has been valued and appreciated.

Kent Stegeman, Board President

Jim Sours is retired, but you wouldn't know it from his work ethic.

Since 2005 he has delivered campaign packets to businesses including ADM Alliance Nutrition as part of their United Way Support Team. He's also served on the United Way Board, Resource Investment, Board Task Forces, and Loaned Executive.

"Referring to my involvement with United Way, a respected colleague once said 'It is who you are' and I couldn't agree more," said Sours.

Jim wants everyone to remember; "The more you give, the more there is to give." We will miss his wisdom and expertise on our Board.

Jim Benz always knew how to get involved. Serving on two electric boards for Adams Electric Co-op, for six years on the United Way Board, and our resource allocations committee.

Jim's proudest contributions were assisting in the creation of the 2021 Strategic Plan as well as the Adams County Academic Success Initiative committee - currently Leaders For Life - a partner agency.

"A community is only as good as the educational opportunities it provides," explains Benz. "United Way plays a vital role in supporting and/or providing education in many forms. This is critical to enhancing the community’s quality of life."

Serving on the Project Blueprint at United Way of Winston Salem, NC taught Chaka Jordan a thing or two about community involvement.

A United Way of Adams County Board member for the past 3 years, who also contributed her time on the Promotions Committee. Her experience as VP, Marketing/Planning at Blessing Health System has helped our organization greatly and we will miss her insight.

"I’m most proud of knowing that United Way impacts over 20 partner agencies," said Jordan. "All of whom have programs to impact our mission of helping the community with education, financial stability and health challenges."

Jerry Jackson has been committed to our mission for a very long time. As a Board member for 6 years and as a Campaign Chair in 2013 - a year that saw the highest-ever total raised for the people of Adams County through our campaign.

"I was extremely proud of the fact we exceeded our goal of 1,203,000, which represented the largest campaign as of that date," said Jackson.

Jackson is most proud of the dedication of the staff and volunteers. "I will continue to encourage individuals to be active supporters, participants, and partners with United Way. It represents in so many ways who we are as a community."

Serving his community was never a question - it was always Charlie's way to try and make his community a better place for all.

A military veteran and active community volunteer for over 70 years, Charlie C. Doan started getting involved with The Salvation Army years ago, helping put together the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas community dinners. He was also instrumental in the grant writing process that eventually got the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Quincy. Countless lives have been transformed because of the hard work he and others put into curating and attracting that wonderful project.

Charlie's tireless work in our community resembles that of this awards' original recipient and it for that reason and many more that he was chosen as the 2019 Joe Bonansinga Community Service Award recipient.

We would like to thank Andrew Asbury and the staff at Royal Printing in Quincy for their continued support of our campaign.

Royal Printing contributed to our 2019 campaign by sponsoring many promotional pieces used by volunteers and staff members, saving us time and dollars in the process.

When considering who advocates for education in our community best, you don't need to look any further than Quincy Public Schools.

The past few decades have seen tremendous change within the education sector in Quincy and Adams County. As time and budgets change the fact that teachers and staff continue to step-up and invest in our area's youth shows just how committed they are to our community.

"United Way and Quincy Public Schools have been great partners working to take care of the needs of all the children of Quincy," said

superintendent of schools, Roy Webb. "We both deal with poverty, literacy, mental health, and health issues almost every day."

The 2019 Community Assessment reiterates where the need is in our community. Working together we've made significant advances addressing key items needed for a successful local economy.

"We truly appreciate our partnership, said Webb. "I think that is why so many of our staff at QPS give generously their time and treasure to United Way. The United Way makes a difference in our kids’ lives."

GIVE: QPS employees show tremendous generosity and are consistently a leadership-level giver. They were a 2018 recipient of the Gold-level Award for excellence in employee giving.

ADVOCATE: QPS Administration continues to address key issues outlined in the United Way Community Assessment including truancy, poverty, mental health, and literacy.

VOLUNTEER: No fewer than 10 QPS staff members volunteered in a United Way solutions group last year.

New opportunities in 2019

In the summer of 2019, general managers from 9 local auto dealerships came together, agreeing to donate a percentage of vehicle sales all summer long to United Way. The results netted close to $11,000 for the people of Adams County through the United Way annual campaign.

“The Dealers Driving Community event goes hand in hand with what we are all about,” said Jason Buxman, general manager of Kunes Country. “The cool thing about this event was being able to team up with other dealerships for a common goal to serve our community.”

United Way thanks the participating dealerships (listed on the right) and encourages local residents to visit and support each of these businesses.

We look forward to participating with all of you once again in 2020. Thank you dealerships for helping us #LiveUnited

Round up to make a difference

Coming together for a great cause

Another wonderful collaboration in July of 2019 was our inaugural ‘Make Change for United Way’ campaign with Hy-Vee, where customers were asked if they’d like to round-up to the nearest dollar on their transaction. The results made cents turn into dollars and netted over $1,700 for the people of Adams County through our #MakeHEREHappen campaign.

WGEM TV and radio graciously took care of our advertising needs and Refreshment Services Pepsi printed over 50 large banners to hang in both Quincy stores.

We thank each participating company for their support of this fun and profitable campaign.

Every Quincy resident has their favorite McClean family restaurant. It's as exact as what sports team you prefer.

It all began with the vision of Cecil “Sprout” McClean and his wife, Evelyn. They were married in 1936 and in 1940, Cecil and Evelyn opened Sprout’s Tavern at 1029 Broadway in Quincy, IL. Cecil’s nickname, the namesake for the restaurant, referred to his stature and his hobby. While Cecil served in World War II, Evelyn handled the day to day operations, but after the war, they grew the business and moved it to a new location at 2814 N. 12th Street in 1948. There, Sprout’s Inn had curbside service and became popular for home cooking and homemade pies. Sprout and Evelyn had five children, and the couple taught them all about the restaurant industry. Joan and Mike, the oldest two, continued working at Sprout’s throughout their whole lives, while Rod and Jeff started

their own successful restaurants. In 1979, son Patrick purchased Sprout’s from his parents. Today, the second and third generation of the McClean Family owns and operates the restaurants. Together, the restaurants employ more than 150 full- and part-time employees. While the menus differ, the focus remains on fresh food, reasonable pricing, good service and family-friendly atmospheres. The family has been a part of the fabric of this community for many years and together they are continuing the great traditions of their family by giving back through a number of causes - one of which has been United Way's restaurant days promotion.

"I think if you have the good fortune to make somebody else’s life a little better then you should," explains Gabe McClean, manager of The Abbey. "Sometimes people just need a little help and giving back helps build a better community for everyone. We're happy to do our part by donating to the United Way restaurant days promotion."

As a corporate donor and workplace dedicated to significantly and consistently supporting the United Way Mission through community involvement.

Community involvement resonating with our local restaurants was put on display this past fall as 19 restaurants, bars, and eateries chose to give back to Adams County through the United Way Wednesday promotion.

"Participating in this year’s Wednesday campaign was very meaningful and impactful for our business," said Amy Grawe, owner of Bailey's. "Not only did we experience an increase in traffic and sales over a typical Wednesday, we

were also afforded the ability to help our community."

The amount raised in 2019 was a new record for this particular promotion, which dates back to the early 2000's when it was named 'Restaurant Days' and happened every day in August.

We also want to thank WGEM for being our media sponsor and mentioning each location on their newscasts that day.
