Last week was a poor week for air-line safety: As bodies of those killed on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 were flown back to the Nether-lands, reports emerged of an inci-dent in Taiwan involving an ATR-72 operated by TransAsia Airways, which crash-landed in bad weather on the island of Penghu with some 46 people feared dead. Later that day, an Air Algerie plane with 116 aboard went missing en route to Algiers from Ouagadougou, Burki-na Faso, and is believed to have crashed in the Sahara desert.

A tragic week for airlines

Boeing’s Iranian parts deal

Boeing is set to seal a deal to sell aircraft spare parts to Iran Air, the state-owned airline of the Is-lamic Republic of Iran - in what would be the first transaction by a US aerospace company with Iran since 1979, according to The Wall Street Journal. The move came about after Iran agreed, in Janu-ary this year, to scale down its nu-clear program in exchange for the partial lifting of sanctions. Boeing subsequently obtained a licence from the US Treasury that allows it to sell products to Iran.

Among the 59 airlines disclos-ing ancillary revenues, fully 44 achieved revenues above the $6 threshold, ranging from China Eastern at $6.43 to Jet2.com at $55.61 per passenger.

The survey said that the record number of airlines included in the 2013 study testifies to the im-portance ancillary revenue plays in the health of the global airline industry.

MTU Aero Engines receives orders worth €1.3bn at Farnborough

For MTU Aero Engines, this year’s Farnborough International Airshow was a big suc-cess: Germany’s leading engine manufacturer announced around €1.3bn in orders, with new business being at the same level as at the last Farnborough Airshow. The largest share of new orders came from the GE9X for the Boeing 777X, in which MTU has recently announced its stake. Emirates and Qatar Airways placed firm orders for GE9X engines to equip 200 Boeing aircraft and took out options for 100 more GE9X-powered jets. MTU also profits from orders for Boeing 787s: Lessor ALC selected the GEnx engine to power 30 Dreamliners. A similarly high volume of orders was re-ceived for the geared turbofan (GTF) engines. The largest GTF order was received from Mexican carrier VivaAerobus, and another deal was signed with Philippine Airlines, with a total order tally of 50 aircraft with PurePower PW1100G engines for the carri-ers’ A320neo fleets. The PW1500G, which is the GTF variant to power Bombardier’s CSeries, also scored big. The Canadian aircraft manufacturer racked up firm orders and inked letters of intent for a total of 67 aircraft from UK-based Falko Regional Air-craft, China’s Zhejiang Loong Airlines, Jordan-based Petra Airlines, Abu Dhabi-based Falcon Aviation Services and two unidentified customers. There were alo firm orders and purchase rights for 50 of the Japanese Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ), which is powered by the PW1200G geared turbofan. The PW1700G and PW1900G, the lat-est additions to the GTF family of engines, will power airframer Embraer’s new E2 jets. Trans States Holdings placed orders and taken out options for 100 E175 E2 jets equipped with PW1700G engines. The Brazilian Azul Airlines selected the PW1900G engine for the 50 E195 E2 jets the carrier has on firm order or option.

before global air-lines started charg-ing extra for checked bags, early boarding and extra legroom seating. The top-10 airlines for ancillary revenues posted a combined total of nearly $2.1bn in 2007. Seven years later, that total has surged to close to $20.4bn.

The survey shows that Alitalia, with ancillary revenues of just $71m, made the top-10 in 2007, while today, 10th spot is held by US Airways with $1.1bn, a 15-fold increase.

At the top of the scale, United Airlines, the world leader with more than double the earnings from ancillary revenues than Delta, the second airline in the table, has turned its MileagePlus loyalty program into an “ancillary revenues powerhouse”, with mile-age sales of more than $2.9bn in 2013. Spending by co-branded credit card holders rose by 35% and active card members rose by 16% over the past three years.

As margins remain razor-thin, even the long-standing hold-outs have begun to seek out new sources of revenues. British Airways now charges fees for seat assignment and bags on its European network, disclosing a total of £95m ($162m) in 2013 from such activities.

When ancillary revenues are described as a percentage of revenues, low-cost carriers come to the fore, both in 2007 and 2013. US budget carrier Spirit Airlines topped the tables last year, with 38.4% of its total turnover coming from ancillary revenues, fol-lowed by Wizz Air with 34.9%. Ryanair, which was first in 2007 with 16.2%, fell to 5th in 2013, with 24.8% of its total revenues derived from ancillary products.

IdeaWorks concludes that the practice of “charging for extras” has become so com-monplace and so widely-accepted by consumers that it’s time to stop referring to ancillary revenues as a “revolution” and welcome them as the “good business prac-tice” that they are.

AAR reports fourth quarter and fiscal year 2014 results

AAR, a leading, global aerospace and defense company, reported fourth quarter and full Fiscal Year 2014 consolidated results. Fourth quarter consolidated sales were $505.4m versus the prior year level of $553.8m. Sales in the Aviation Services seg-ment declined 10% to $373.8m mainly due to softness at the Company’s MRO facili-ties and fewer expeditionary airlift flying positions. Sales in the Technology Products segment declined 4% to $131.6m, primarily due to lower sales of commercial cargo systems. Consolidated gross profit margin for the fourth quarter on a reported basis was 17.0%, an improvement over the adjusted gross profit margin of 16.3% in prior year period.

Full Fiscal Year 2014 consolidated sales were $2.04bn. Aviation Services segment sales declined 3% to $1.56bn as a result of lower airlift support and lower activity in MRO. Technology Products segment sales declined 9% to $475.0m driven by an expected decline in demand for mobility products and lower commercial cargo sales. Sales to commercial customers were 59% of total sales as compared to 61% in fiscal 2013, with remainder of the sales to government and defense customers.

American Airlines Group reports highest quarterly profit in company history

For the second quarter 2014, American Air-lines Group reported a record GAAP net profit of $864m. This compares to a GAAP net profit of $220m in the second quarter 2013, for AMR Corporation prior to the merger. The Company believes it is more meaningful to compare year-over-year results for Ameri-can Airlines and US Airways excluding special charges and on a combined basis, which is a non-GAAP formulation that combines the results for AMR Corporation and US Airways Group. On this basis, second quarter 2014 net profit excluding net special charges was $1.5 billion, a record for any quarter in the history of the Company. This represents a 114% im-provement over the combined non-GAAP net profit of $681m excluding net special charges for the same period in 2013. Total revenues in the second quarter were a record $11.4bn, up 10.2% versus the second quarter 2013 on a combined basis, on a 3.1% increase in total available seat miles (ASMs).

Delta Air Lines announces June quar-ter profit

Delta Air Lines reported that pre-tax income for the June quarter was $1.4bn, excluding special items, an increase of $593m over the June 2013 quarter on a similar basis. Delta’s net income for the June 2014 quarter was $889m and its operating margin was 15.1%, exclud-ing special items. On a GAAP basis which in-cludes special items, Delta’s pre-tax income was $1.3bn, operating margin was 14.9% and net income was $801m. Results include $340m in profit sharing expense in recognition of Delta employees’ contributions toward achieving the company’s financial goals. Delta generated over $2bn of operating cash flow and $1.5bn of free cash flow during the June 2014 quarter. As of mid-July, the company has used its strong cash generation in 2014 to reduce its adjusted net debt below $8bn, contribute more than $900m of funding to its defined benefit pen-sion plans, and return $550m to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.

JetBlue Airways reported results for the second quarter 2014

Operat-ing expenses for the quarter increased 9.8%, or $119m, over the prior year period. Inter-

year to more than $21 per passenger. Second-quarter cargo revenue decreased 1.7% versus the second quarter of 2013 to $232m. Other revenue in the second quarter increased 1.7% year-over-year to $1.1bn.

MTU Aero Engines presents half-year results

Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, and Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, outlined plans to reinforce their long-term commitment to the growth of India’s economy and aviation industry, including a major new turnaround strat-egy for Jet Airways to return to profitability in three years. The two airlines have been code-share partners since 2008 and their relationship was strengthened in November 2013, after Etihad Airways received approvals to acquire a 24% stake in Jet Airways, marking it the first investment by a foreign carrier in India’s airline industry. Supporting the partnership, the Jet Airways Board recently approved a three-year business plan to reshape the airline and secure its long-term future. The plan incorporates a series of critical measures that lay the foundations for a return to profitability, such as long-term network, fleet and product de-velopments to optimise the airline’s domestic and international operations. Focus areas for international operations will include network developments, including new services to mar-kets such as Europe, China, Australia and Southeast Asia, expanded frequencies to existing routes and additional codeshares. Jet Airways’ two and three class aircraft product will also be enhanced and the seat count optimised on wide-body Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 aircraft. In addition, the domestic business model will improve connectivity across India and worldwide, while removing complexity in product and fleet, including the standardisation and reconfiguration of the Boeing 737 fleet. To initiate the three-year turnaround plan, the Jet Airways Board and management team have already worked with auditors to clean up its balance sheet and write down overvalued non-cash assets. Jet Airways has announced a new team at the helm with Cramer Ball as its new chief executive officer and Subodh Karnik as the chief operating officer pending regulatory approval.

ADSoftware reported the successful launch of its Airpack Fleet Management System and logistics solution to Nova Airways, Sudan’s largest carrier. In an industry that de-mands constant compliance with regulations, Sudanese carrier Nova Airways was looking for a system that could help them to stay ahead of changing requirements by anticipating any modifications required by regulatory texts. The AirPack solution proved to have the answer, with two specific modules inside the maintenance software which are dedicated to airworthiness management, regulatory compliance and fleet reliability. AirTime would enable the engineering department to coordinate the compliance of the aircraft with the required maintenance programs, applicable airworthiness directives, service bulletins, log books, planning, mechanics and shop activity.

Bombardier announced the implementation of a new organizational structure, comprised of four business segments: Bombardier Transportation, Bombardier Business Air-craft, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft and Bombardier Aerostructures and En-gineering Services.

Effective immediately, all four business seg-ments will report directly to Pierre Beaudoin, president and CEO, Bombardier Inc. The heads of the business segments remain Lutz Bertling at Transportation, Eric Martel at Business Air-craft and Mike Arcamone at Commercial Air-craft. The head of the new Aerostructures and Engineering Services business segment will be appointed in the next few weeks. Bombardier Aerospace group functions and the Custom-er Services division will be absorbed into the three aerospace business segments, generat-ing reductions in cost and overhead.

Revenues in the commercial mainte-nance business have fallen by 7% to €572.9m (1-6/2013: €613.4m). The V2500 engine ac-counted for the largest part of these revenues. Revenues in the military engine business have barely changed, at €225.5m (1-6/2013: €223.2m). The EJ200 Eurofighter engine was the main source of these revenues. MTU’s or-der backlog increased by 8% to €10,153.9m between January and June 2014, compared with the level reported at the end of 2013 (Dec 31, 2013: €9,374.6m).

Boeing reports second-quarter re-sults

Boeing reported second-quarter core earnings per share (non-GAAP) of $2.42, reflecting strong performance and favorable tax items. Commercial Airplanes second-quarter revenue increased 5% to $14.3bn on higher deliveries. Second-quarter operating margin was 10.8%, reflecting the delivery volume and strong per-formance offset by the $238m pre-tax charge on the KC-46A Tanker program. Commercial Airplanes booked 264 net orders during the quarter. Backlog remains strong with over 5,200 airplanes valued at a record $377bn.

B/E Aerospace record second quarter 2014 financial results exceed expec-tations

B/E Aerospace reported its second quarter 2014 financial results. Second quarter 2014 revenues of $1.09bn increased 28.1% as com-pared with the prior year period. Second quar-ter 2014 operating earnings were $198.1m, an increase of 24.8%, and operating margin was 18.2%. On a GAAP basis, operating earn-ings were $185.3m. Second quarter 2014 earnings before income taxes were $166.4m, an increase of 29.8%. On a GAAP basis, earn-ings before income taxes were $153.6m. Sec-ond quarter 2014 net earnings were $117.6m, representing an increase of 27.3%, as com-pared with the prior year period. On a GAAP basis net earnings were $108.6m.

Rockwell Collins reports third quar-ter fiscal 2014 earnings

Rockwell Collins reported total sales for the third quarter of fiscal year 2014 were $1.26bn, an increase of 12% from the same period in 2013, primarily due to the acquisition of AR-INC. Total segment operating earnings for the third quarter of fiscal year 2014 were $263m, an increase of $6m from the same period a year ago. Third quarter fiscal year 2014 earnings per share from continuing operations were $1.19

and income from continuing operations was $163m compared to earnings per share from continuing operations of $1.18 and income from continuing operations of $161m in the third quarter of last year. Sales to aircraft origi-nal equipment manufacturers increased due to higher hardware delivery rates for the Boe-ing 787 aircraft and higher customer funded development program sales, partially offset by lower deliveries at the light end of the business jet market. Aftermarket sales increased prima-rily due to higher service and support activities and higher Boeing 747-8 and 787 spares sales, partially offset by lower retrofit sales. Operat-ing earnings for the third quarter of 2014 were about flat with the third quarter of 2013 and operating margin decreased 150 basis points. While operating earnings benefited from low-er company funded research and development expense, operating margins were impacted by higher employee benefit related costs and less favorable incremental margins associated with higher sales of newer products and customer funded development programs.
