Noncitrus Fruits Highlights

In 2016, the Nation’s utilized production of the leading noncitrus fruit crops totaled 18.7 million tons, up 2 percent from

2015. Fresh utilized production for 2016 noncitrus fruit crops totaled 8.02 million tons, up 4 percent from the revised

previous year. Processed utilized production totaled 10.6 million tons, virtually unchanged from 2015. The commodities

showing the largest percentage increase in utilized production from the previous year were apricots, kiwifruit, and tart

cherries.

The value of utilized production for 2016 noncitrus fruit crops totaled 16.6 billion dollars, up fractionally from the

previous year. The commodities showing the largest percentage increase in value of utilized production from the previous

year were kiwifruit, apricots, and figs. Bearing acreage for major deciduous fruit crops totaled 1.70 million, down

2 percent from 2015. Bearing acreage for miscellaneous noncitrus fruits totaled 362,530, down 1 percent from the revised

2015 crop year.

utilized production for 2016 tree nut crops totaled 8.76 billion dollars, up 4 percent from the previous year. Bearing

Noncitrus Fruits Comments

Apples: Total apple production for 2016 is estimated at 11.3 billion pounds, up 12 percent from 2015. Bearing acreage

totaled 322,600 down 1,180 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2016 crop was up 13 percent to

34,900 pounds per acre. The all price for the 2016 crop, at 32.0 cents per pound, was down 1.6 cents per pound from the

previous season. United States total value for the 2016 season was $3.46 billion dollars, up 3 percent from the

2015 season.

Washington growers experienced favorable weather and reported a high quality crop. Harvest began one to two weeks

earlier than normal as a result of positive weather conditions. Michigan growers generally saw excellent fruit quality and

yields while New York had regional weather events that limited quality and crop potential.

Beginning in 2016, apple estimates were discontinued in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, New Hampshire,

Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Utah.

Apricots: Total apricot production for 2016 is estimated at 64,050 tons, up 40 percent from 2015. Bearing acreage totaled

9,700, down 520 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2016 crop was up 48 percent to 6.60 tons per acre.

The all price for the 2016 crop, at 898 dollars per ton, was down 11 percent from the previous season. United States total

value for the 2016 season totaled 57.4 million dollars, up 25 percent from the 2015 season.

For California apricots, the 2016 crop represented a return to normal growing conditions from 2015's drought. In addition

to more favorable rainfall, growers reported lower than ideal levels of chilling, but substantially better than 2015 levels,

and enough to encourage a good bloom. Fresh market apricots were reported to be harvested in April, with Patterson

apricots, used mostly for processing, being harvested in early to mid-June.

Beginning in 2016, apricot estimates were discontinued in Utah.

Avocados: Utilized production for 2016-2017 is estimated at 171,380 tons, down 25 percent from the revised previous

year. The California crop, accounting for 86 percent of the United States utilized production, was down 27 percent from

2015-2016. Bearing age acreage in the United States, at 57,430, was down 3 percent from the previous season. The value

of the 2016-2017 crop was down 27 percent from the 2015-2016 crop year in all States. The price was down in California

and Hawaii but up in Florida.

The bearing age acreage in California continues to remain steady, however in Florida and Hawaii acreage is decreasing.

The Laurel Wilt disease continues to a have a negative impact on the Florida avocado groves. Each year, additional

commercial avocado trees are destroyed by this disease.

Bananas: Hawaii’s total production for 2016, at 5.60 million pounds, was down 39 percent from the revised 2015.

Bearing acreage totaled 700, down 100 acres from the revised previous season. Total yield, at 8,000 pounds per acre for

the 2016 crop, was down 30 percent. The all price for the 2016 crop, at 1.01 dollars per pound, was up 9.8 cents per pound

from the previous season. Hawaii banana crop total value for the 2016 season was 5.59 million dollars, down 32 percent

from the revised 2015 season.

The 2016 banana crop in Hawaii continued to be affected by the banana bunchy top virus, which stunts the growth of

plants and deforms the fruit. Reported labor shortages in Hawaii continued to impact the State’s agricultural sector,

including bananas.

Blackberries: Total 2016 United States blackberry production is estimated at 58.4 million pounds, up 14 percent from

2015. Harvested acreage totaled 7,000, up 80 acres from the previous season. The average yield, at 8,290 pounds per acre,

was up 13 percent from the previous year.

Blackberry harvest started the week ending July 17 and producers reported larger amounts of blackberries harvested than

the previous season.


Beginning in 2016, evergreen variety estimates were discontinued.

Blueberries, Cultivated: Total 2016 United States cultivated blueberry production is estimated at 594 million pounds,

up 5 percent from 2015. Harvested acreage totaled 92,800, up 2 percent from the previous season. The average yield, at

6,340 pounds per acre, was up 3 percent from the previous year.

Oregon growers reported a good crop that was aided by warm days which helped reduce disease pressure. Michigan

blueberry growers reported a mild winter and an average spring which helped the plants to grow and thrive normally with

few issues. A dry summer helped to control spotted wing drosophila (SWD) and mummy berry, but the biggest issues

growers faced this year came from labor shortages and lower prices. Some producers in Washington reported fungus and

SWD which decreased yields.

Beginning in 2016, cultivated blueberry estimates were discontinued in Alabama, Arkansas, and Indiana.

Blueberries, Wild: Total 2016 United States wild blueberry production is estimated at 102 million pounds, up 1 percent

from 2015. Harvested acreage totaled 23,100, up 3 percent from the previous season. The average yield, at 4,400 pounds

per acre, was down 2 percent from the previous year.

As of the week ending September 11, 2016, ninety-nine percent of the Maine blueberries were harvested. Maine blueberry

yield declined due to the drought.

Boysenberries: Total 2016 United States boysenberry production is estimated at 2.16 million pounds, down 12 percent

from 2015. Harvested acreage totaled 340, down 10 acres from the previous season. The average yield, at 6,320 pounds

per acre, was down 10 percent from the previous year.

Boysenberry yields were lower than the previous year due to a combination of factors. Some producers reported insect

problems and others experienced dry weather.

Cherries, Sweet: Utilized sweet cherry production for 2016, at 343,090 tons, was up 3 percent from 2015. Two of the

four estimating States (Michigan and Oregon) showed increased production from last season, while California and

Washington showed a decrease.

Growers in Michigan reported warmer temperatures, timely rains, good pollinating conditions, and minimal damage from

frost. In Oregon, growers reported a record early harvest start. In California, the season began and ended early. The 2016

production decreased from the previous year and was about 30 percent below the pre-drought average. Growers in

Washington reported an early start to the season. Excessive heat in the spring, followed by rain events, resulted in a lighter

crop.

Beginning in 2016, sweet cherry estimates were discontinued in Idaho, Montana, New York, and Utah.

Cherries, Tart: Utilized tart cherry production for 2016 is estimated at 324 million pounds, up 29 percent from 2015.

Four of the five estimating States (Michigan, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin) showed increased production from last

season, while New York showed a decrease.

In Michigan, the largest producing State, harvest began in early July with fruit ripening quickly due to warm temperatures.

In Utah, growers reported excellent yields that were higher than the previous year. Washington growers reported a record

early harvest start. In Wisconsin, a mild winter and plenty of rain led to a near record crop. In New York, production was

lower due to a freeze event during the bloom period which limited crop potential in some areas.

Beginning in 2016, tart cherry estimates were discontinued in Oregon and Pennsylvania.

Coffee: Hawaii utilized coffee production totaled 28.6 million pounds (cherry basis) for the 2016-2017 season,

down 5 percent from the revised previous season. Bearing acreage totaled 7,000, up 100 acres from the previous year.

Average yield, at 4,180 pounds (cherry basis) per acre, was down 420 pounds from the revised previous year.


Coffee farmers on the Big Island in Hawaii experienced a rough growing season due to dry weather. Many growers were

forced to file crop insurance claims due to the extended dry period from October to March. Coffee Berry Borer continues

to be a major problem, mostly for the smaller producers who are unable to afford the remedial spray.

Cranberries: United States 2016 total cranberry production is estimated at 9.63 million barrels, up 12 percent from 2015.

Harvested acreage totaled 41,500, up 600 acres from the previous season. The average yield, at 230.0 barrels per acre, was

up 11 percent from the previous year.

Wisconsin experienced a very good growing season for all crops and cranberries were no exception. Despite some

complaints of rot and poor fruit quality, many growers reported having a record year. The 2016 crop year in

Massachusetts was impacted by drought which led to some water rationing and delayed harvest.

Dates: Utilized date production is estimated at 38,040 tons for the 2016 season, down 2 percent from the previous season.

Bearing acreage totaled 12,400, up 2,200 acres from the previous year as a result of Arizona being included in the annual

estimating program. Average yield, at 3.07 tons per acre, was down 0.75 ton, from 2015.

The weather conditions were optimal for date production. Lower rainfall did not impact the crop, since dates do not

require a lot of water. The lower yield is due to young trees now becoming of bearing age with lower production than the

fully mature trees.

Beginning in 2016, date estimates began in Arizona.

Fig: California utilized fig production is estimated at 31,600 tons for the 2016 season, down slightly from the previous

season revised estimate. Bearing acreage totaled 6,100, down 300 acres from the revised previous year. Average yield, at

5.18 tons per acre, was up 0.23 ton from 2015.

During the 2016 season, bearing age acreage continued to show a declining trend. However, this was the highest yield per

acre since the 2007 season. Price continued to increase from previous years.

Grapes: Utilized grape production for 2016 is estimated at 7.67 million tons, up 1 percent from the revised 2015 total.

The California crop, which accounted for 88 percent of the 2016 United States utilized grape production, was down

1 percent from the previous year. Bearing acreage, at 1.01 million for the 2016 season, was down 1 percent from the

revised 2015 acreage. California bearing acres for the 2016 season was down 15,000 acres from the previous year. In

2016, the value of utilized production totaled 6.26 billion dollars, up 6 percent from the revised 2015 value of 5.91 billion

dollars. California’s 2016 utilized production was valued at 5.58 billion dollars, accounting for 89 percent of the overall

United States value of utilized production.

In California, high summer temperatures affected some vineyards. Washington producers reported an excellent production

year that lead to higher yields. Mild spring temperatures in Michigan prompted earlier than normal bud development.

Cooler summer temperatures delayed crop development until August when warm temperatures moved the season ahead of

normal. Michigan growers reported the crop to be heavy with good sugar accumulation.

Beginning in 2016, grape estimates were discontinued in Arkansas and Georgia.

Guavas: Beginning in 2015, guava estimates were discontinued in Hawaii.

Kiwifruit: Utilized production in California for 2016 totaled 28,300 tons, up 35 percent from the previous year revised

production. Acreage, at 3,700, was down 200 acres from the revised previous season. The value of the 2016 crop was

up 45 percent from the revised 2015 crop year to 44.4 million dollars, and the price for the 2015 season was

up 100 dollars per ton to 1,570 dollars.


The California kiwifruit crop enjoyed good growing conditions throughout the season. Beneficial weather conditions

prevailed with good bloom and chilling hours. Growers reported better pollination than in previous years and indicated

the crop reflected good quality and sizing.

Nectarines: Utilized nectarine production is estimated at 167,800 tons for the 2016 season, down 3 percent from the

revised previous season. Bearing age acreage totaled 20,200, down 1,000 acres from the revised previous year. Average

yield, at 8.31 tons per acre, was up 0.03 ton from the revised previous year.

The 2016 California nectarine crop was inconsistent across varieties with some growers reporting ripening 2 to 3 weeks

earlier than normal. Despite another year of water shortages, nectarine yields were slightly up from 2015. Early season

high temperatures affected fruit sizing. Growers struggled with labor shortages. Overall, yield and quality were generally

good.

Olives: California utilized olive production is estimated at 159,600 tons for the 2016 season, down 11 percent from the

previous season. Bearing acreage totaled 35,000, down 1,000 acres from the previous year. Average yield, at

4.56 tons per acre, was down 0.41 ton from the previous year.

The California olive crop had an average bloom. The bloom was mixed as growers reported rainy weather and some hail

resulting in variable crop yields. The prevalent drought conditions negatively impacted the 2016 olive crop.

Papaya: Hawaii’s total production for 2016, at 19.8 million pounds, was down 28 percent from 2015. Bearing acreage

totaled 1,300, down 200 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2016 crop, at 15,200 pounds per acre, was

down 3,000 pounds per acre. The all price for the 2016 crop, at 49.2 cents per pound, was up 7.3 cents per pound from the

previous season. Hawaii total value for the 2016 season totaled 9.71 million dollars, down 8 percent from the 2015 season.

During the summer and fall of 2016, the papaya industry, mainly located on the Big Island, suffered numerous excessive

rain events, and, at the beginning of 2017, the island experienced extreme drought. These weather events resulted in a

reduction in harvested acreage.

Peaches: Utilized peach production for 2016 is estimated at 778,920 tons, down 6 percent from the previous year. The

California crop, accounting for 73 percent of the United States utilized peach production, was down 6 percent from 2015.

The California Freestone crop was inconsistent and early varieties ripened around 2 weeks earlier than normal. Hail hurt

some orchards and mid-summer varieties suffered from brown rot. Early high temperatures affected sizing. Growers

struggled with labor shortages, but overall yield and quality were generally good. The Clingstone crop’s full bloom

occurred in late February, slightly earlier than the previous year. The crop was mostly reported to be good condition

throughout the State. Georgia’s peach crop received the necessary chill hours in January and February to deliver an

excellent crop. Many producers reported the best crop in several years, despite some reports of crop reduction due to

drought, as well as damage from a late freeze and some fungal issues in a few areas.

Beginning in 2016, peach estimates were discontinued in Arkansas, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Pears: Utilized pear production for 2016 is estimated at 735,870 tons, down 8 percent from the 2015 estimate. All three

estimating States (California, Oregon, and Washington) showed decreased production from the previous year. Bearing

acreage, at 46,300, decreased for the thirteenth consecutive year.

In the Pacific Northwest, warm spring weather and good pollination led to a full bloom. The summer was hot and dry with

little precipitation and some reported temperatures exceeded the 100 degree mark. Harvest started in the first week of

August, which was earlier than normal. In California, the crop was reduced in the Sacramento River District due to reports

of severe blight problems. Harvest began in the Sacramento-San Joaquin region the second week of July. Generally fair

weather was common for harvest, although there were several very hot days reported.

Beginning in 2016, pear estimates were discontinued in Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania.


Plums: Total plum production for 2016 is estimated at 135,500 tons, up 28 percent from 2015. Bearing acreage totaled

18,700, up 900 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2016 crop was up 22 percent to 7.25 tons per acre. The

all price for the 2016 crop, at 813 dollars per ton, was down 19 percent from the previous season. United States total value

for the 2016 season totaled 109 million dollars, up 4 percent from the 2015 season.

In California, there were adequate chill hours and a good bloom for the plum crop. The overall reported yield for plums

was good in Fresno and Tulare counties despite pockets of rain showers and cooler temperatures potentially reducing bee

activity in some areas. There was some hail damage reported in April. The harvest began in mid-May.

Prunes: Total prune production for 2016 is estimated at 54,000 tons, down 52 percent from 2015. Bearing acreage totaled

45,000, down 2,000 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2016 crop was down 1.18 tons to 1.20 tons per

acre. The all price for the 2016 crop, at 1,600 dollars per ton, was down 22 percent from the previous season. United

States total value for the 2016 season, at 86.4 million dollars, was down 62 percent from the 2015 season.

Growers experienced unfavorable weather conditions during the bloom and pollination of the 2016 crop in the main prune

growing areas in Northern California. A series of storms with cold, wet, and windy conditions reduced the time that bees

could be active as pollinators, significantly reducing crop yields. Numerous growers reported a total crop failure for the

season. Consequently, even with more favorable weather through the rest of the season, prune production was the lowest

in the last ten years.

Prunes and Plums: Beginning in 2016, prunes and plums estimates were discontinued in Idaho, Michigan, Oregon, and

Washington.

Raspberries: Total 2016 United States raspberry production is estimated at 304 million pounds, up 4 percent from 2015.

Harvested acreage totaled 21,660, down 260 acres from the previous season. The average yield, at 14,000 pounds per

acre, was up 6 percent from the previous year.

California growers reported being discouraged by labor and water restrictions. Oregon’s warm weather resulted in average

to above average yields, but some growers did report sunburn issues. Washington growers experienced ideal weather

conditions which also led to early ripening. The only damage reported was due to wind knocking berries off the plants

before they could be harvested.

Strawberries: Utilized production for 2016, at 31.3 million cwt, was up 2 percent from 2015. Four of the six estimating

States (California, New York, North Carolina, and Washington) showed increased production from the previous season,

while Florida and Oregon showed a decrease.

In California, which made up 92 percent of the production in the United States, growers reported the amount of

strawberries grown in the 2016 season surpassed the production from 2015. For 2016, there was an increase in summer

plantings for fall production, despite winter rains early in the year in comparison to the two previous years. The

production total increased by a switch to higher producing varieties and generally better weather conditions for most of

the season. In Florida, wet conditions early in the growing season presented some disease and insect issues. In Oregon,

some growers reported heat stress negatively impacted the crop, as well as weed and pest conditions.

Beginning in 2016, strawberry estimates were discontinued in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Tree Nuts Comments Almonds: Utilized almond production, at 1.07 million tons, was up 13 percent from 2015. Bearing acreage for almonds

continued to increase, totaling 940,000 in 2016. Yield, at 2,280 pounds per acre, was up 210 pounds from 2015.The 2016

utilized almond crop was valued at 5.16 billion dollars, 12 percent less than the previous year. The price per pound of

almonds, at $2.44, declined 22 percent from 2015.

The 2016 California almond crop bloom began in mid-February, after the winter provided better chill hours than the

previous year. Bloom conditions were good; bloom was reportedly fast and uniform. Precipitation for the 2016 crop year


was significantly better than in 2015. Many areas were still experiencing drought conditions, although trees showed signs

of recovery from the last few years of insufficient water.

Hazelnuts: The hazelnut crop, at 44,000 tons, was 42 percent above the previous year. Bearing acreage increased

9 percent from 2015 to 37,000. Yield, at 1.19 tons per acre, was up 31 percent from 2015. Hazelnut utilized crop value, at

119 million dollars, was 37 percent above the previous year. Price per ton, at $2,700, declined 4 percent from 2015.

Historically, hazelnut orchards exhibit alternate bearing patterns and 2016 was an ‘up’ year. Pollination conditions were

good in the spring and the weather throughout the growing season was favorable with no rainfall issues. Harvest was

complicated by an unusually wet fall that left some of the crop on the orchard floor for longer than normal.

Macadamia Nuts: Macadamia nut production totaled 21,000 tons, down 11 percent from 2015. Bearing acreage

remained unchanged at 16,000 while yield decreased 11 percent from the previous year. The 2016 utilized macadamia nut

crop was valued at 42.0 million dollars, down 8 percent from 2015. The price per pound of macadamia nuts was 3 cents

higher than in 2015.

Growing conditions for macadamia nuts were variable by area for 2016. There were reports of Macadamia Felted Coccid

impacting some of the crop. There was a labor shortage for macadamia nuts, while prices remained strong. The 2016 price

was a record high.

Pecans: Pecan utilized production in 2016 is estimated at 269 million pounds, up 6 percent from 2015. Improved pecan

production, at 250 million pounds, accounted for 93 percent of the total. The value of the 2016 utilized pecan crop

increased 24 percent from the previous year to 697 million dollars. Improved pecan production again accounted for the

majority of the total, increasing 28 percent from 2015, to 664 million dollars. The price per pound for all pecans, at $2.59,

was $0.39 higher than 2015.

In Georgia, pecan producers reported an average year. Some were affected by tropical storms but the main pecan growing

regions were not directly impacted. In California, regular rains eased drought conditions leading to improved yields.

Beginning in 2016, pecan estimates were discontinued in Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, and South

Carolina.

Pistachios: Pistachio utilized production, at 448,250 tons was 232 percent higher than 2015. Bearing acreage, at 239,000,

continued to increase from previous years. Yield, at 3,750 pounds per acre, was up 223 percent from 2015. The pistachio

utilized crop value for 2016, at 1.51 billion dollars, was up 70 percent from the previous year. Price per pound declined

49 percent from 2015 to $1.68. The majority of the crop, 74 percent, was sold in shell.

The 2016 pistachio production was a record high, surpassing the previous record of 551 million pounds set in 2012. The

production reflected a combination of more favorable weather, sufficient winter chilling, good bloom overlap, and normal

nut filling. In addition, due to the very poor crop in 2015, the 2016 crop was an “on” year for pistachios. Harvest began in

mid to late August. As the crop size grew larger, the crop quality declined due to the wide range of timing in the ripening.

With a heavy crop, it is difficult for nuts to mature evenly throughout the tree leading to both early splits and closed

shells. The crop ended up having a higher percentage of shelling stock than in a normal year.

Walnuts: Walnut utilized production in 2016, at 686,000 tons, was up 13 percent from the previous year. Bearing acreage

for walnuts continued to increase from previous seasons, totaling 315,000 in 2016. Yield, at 2.18 tons per acre, was up

8 percent from 2015. The 2016 utilized walnut crop was valued at 1.24 billion dollars, 23 percent more than the previous

year. The majority of the utilized walnut production, 66 percent, was sold shelled. Walnut prices increased 8 percent to

$1,810 per ton in 2016.

The 2016 walnut crop was a record high level of production. The 2016 season began well with adequate chilling hours

and a fair amount of winter rains. Weather during bloom was considered average, with some ideal days and some days of

stronger winds and wet weather. Hot weather in August resulted in an earlier than usual start to the harvest.


Definition of Terms

Bearing acreage: An orchard, grove, or vineyard is considered to be of bearing age when it can normally be expected to

produce a commercially significant quantity of the crop. Bearing age is a function of many factors including variety,

rootstock, year planted, etc.

Apple crop: Apple production estimates are published only for commercial orchards, according to the laws governing

crop production reports (7 U.S.C 411b). Commercial orchards, under these laws, are defined as orchards of 100 or more

bearing trees.

Harvested not sold: Fruit of marketable quality that was picked but not sold for various reasons up to 2 percent of total

production is considered normal seasonal loss and is excluded from total production. Reported values are above and

beyond these normal seasonal losses. Beginning in 2015, all quantities harvested not sold are included in total production.

Total production: The quantity of a crop actually harvested plus quantities which would have been acceptable for fresh

market or processing but were not harvested because of economic or natural reasons are included in production estimates.

Unutilized production: The difference between total and utilized production, which is marketable fruit not harvested for

economic or natural reasons and harvested fruit not sold or utilized, is unutilized production. Beginning in 2015, estimates

only include harvested not sold.

Unharvested production: Marketable fruit produced, but not harvested for various reasons, is unharvested production.

Unharvested amounts up to 2 percent of total production are considered normal seasonal losses and are excluded from

total production. Published estimates of unharvested production represent quantities above and beyond these normal

seasonal losses. Beginning in 2015, estimates were discontinued.

Utilization: These estimates refer to the first utilization, not necessarily the final utilization of a crop. For example, frozen

fruit includes some fruit that may be later used for making preserves. Grade-outs for fresh market fruit which are

processed are included in the processing quantity. Fruit graded-out from canning or freezing and utilized for juice is

included with juice.

Utilized production: The amount of a crop sold plus the quantities used at home or held in storage represents utilized

production.

Yield per acre: Unless otherwise stated, yield per acre is based on total production.

Price and Value Definitions

Price: Except where specified as monthly, prices in this report represent the Market Year Average (MYA) price. For a

crop sold for both fresh market and processing, the total crop MYA is a weighted average of the fresh and processing

prices.

Prices for fresh fruit represent the average price producers receive at the point of first sale. This is commonly referred to

as the average price as sold. The exception is fresh fruit sales in California, Michigan (apples only), New York (apples

only), and Washington which are equivalent returns at packinghouse door.

Prices for fruit sold for processing are equivalent returns for fruit delivered to the processing plant door except for

cranberries, California olives, and freestone peaches, which are priced at the first delivery point.

Value: Crop value estimates in this report cover the marketing season or crop year and should not be confused with cash

receipts which are based on a calendar year.

Statistical Methodology

Survey Procedures: Non-probability monthly grower surveys are used to collect crop condition, yield, acreage, and

production data. These fruit inquiries are generally mailed surveys during the growing season. Telephone follow-up of

mail survey non-respondents is used to ensure adequate coverage. Special grower disposition surveys are conducted at the

end of each season to provide additional details about the crop. They provide indications of the quantity used on farms,

the quantity sold directly to consumers, unharvested production, and production not sold or utilized. All fruit and nut

processors or shellers are also surveyed annually to determine quantity handle, utilization, and the origin of the

commodity.

Estimating Procedures: Information obtained from the non-citrus fruits and nuts grower surveys along with federal

administrative data is used to establish estimates of bearing acres, yield, total production, utilized production, price, and

value. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates.

Revision Policy: Final survey indications and check data for most non-citrus fruits and nuts are available prior to

submitting utilization estimates. As a result revisions are allowed for a few crops in the spring. End-of-season estimates of

production are made following harvest and are subject to revision the following year based on a thorough review of all

available data.

Reliability: Survey indications are subject to sampling variability because all operations growing non-citrus fruits and/or

nuts are not included in the sample. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication,

imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be

measured directly, but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of

all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
