United States National Park Service

1990 NPS Cooperating Association Publications Competition WINNEES The Director's Award About the Competition....

The National Park Service Cooperating Association Publications Competition was held for the first time in 1972. Established to encourage the production of high-quality publications by cooperating associations, the competition has witnessed an increase in the quantity and quality of entries each year since its inception.

A key element of the competition is the evaluation of entries by a panel of seven independent judges. When all of the entries have arrived in the Washington Office of the NPS, they are assembled into sets and sent to the judges, who review each publication and record their comments on entry forms. With a total of nearly 200 entries, the task of the judges is monumental. They volunteer many hours in support of the competition.

The judges assemble at a later date and discuss their perceptions of entries in each category. A complete set of entries is available at this important meeting, to allow for thorough review and discussion of those "finalists" in each category.

For some years, the judging luncheon and the intense afternoon of discussions that follow have been hosted by Howard Paine at the National Geographic in Washington. Far from reaching a consensus on which entries should receive honors, the judges exchange convincing arguments for their favorites. In the end, votes are used to decide the winners in many categories.

When all 16 categories have been decided, the judges select one outstanding entry for the Director's Award. Chosen from among the most outstanding entry in each category, the publication receiving this award must demonstrate overall excellence in writing, design, and production.

Cooperating associations are recognized for these excellent publications at an awards ceremony during the closing banquet of the Biennial Convention of the Conference of National Park Cooperating Associations. The National Park Service awards elegant certificates, hand-set and printed on a letter press on fine paper, to the cooperating associations.

It is in this manner that the Service seeks to encourage the continuing tradition of excellence in publications that are offered to the visiting public by cooperating associations.
