Dear Governor:

I read with a great deal of interest the clean-cut, dignified statement of yours which was carried in the Public Press on March 21 with respect to your attitude towards the Republican Presidential Nomination.

I just wanted to say to you, as I have before, that should the time ever come when I· could be of any assistance to you, politically or otherwise, please do not hesitate to call on me.

Your duties in the Navy may possibly at some time or other bring you into contact with a Captain George Edmund Peterson, U.S.N. He happens to be my brother and at present has command of Submarine Division #141, based somewhere in the Pacific. If you do happen to contact him, it would please me if you would make yourself known to him. I am sure that he would be happy to make your acquaintance. Likewise, I am quite sure you would like him.

Dear Red:

Hotel Metropole Mosccrw April 2.1944.

Your le 'ter of Dec.13th finally a.r.ri ved here a couple of weeks ago--taking an inordinately long time because it has to be forwarded on from London and Algiers.

You can almost see it grow from week to week and month to month a.s a factor in world affairs. These people have rery definite ideas about i,'rhat they want all up and down the

' tine. Often enough they are things which we have no basic objection , 0 but they talk a different language from us and it is going to be

long time before we learn to get along with them and vice versa. It s so important, however, that it is going to be worth all the e~fort e can spare. And it is not going to be eas.y. This .is probably' not .

the t.i.me and place to go into a cri tique on our !IE thods of coniuc tir:g a f fairs with Russia. But I think it is damn important for the American people to be realistic about the Russians and not go off daydreaming that just because we have Teheran that everything is going to be rosy. It aint o Tbey are going to irritate us and ruffle our hair. And we are going to do the same thing to them. I think, in the end, it will come out all right because the basic ingredianta are right--they want to get along with the world ( altho the world, as r. they see it is not exacUy the world as we know it) and, I think, we want to get along wi th them. But good intentions are certainly not enough. It is going to take shrewd, hard diplomacy--an ability to take it and to hand it back--to make the thing work.

I envy you your assignment in the Pacific. It has been a top show this past eight or ten weeks and even the Red Army has had to hump to keep up with your headlines. If you are still aut there this summer, as I suppose you will be, I may see you. 1~ current program will keep me here until June, probably, then on to India and, I hope, the Pacific shaw. I ' am afraid that I am going to miss the fireworks from England but even so I think the chance of 'seeing all th.e war fronts around t he world , is one to be grabbed. '

I see your preSidential boom is coming along very smart~ and I hardly need add that I wish you all the luck in the world on that. I'd certainly like to get back to the states for the Republican convention and the campaign. It should be a .hon~.

Meanti~, keep giving the Japs the old stuff and take car e of yourself.

If Tremaine is still with you give him 1I{V regards.

IN REPLYING REFER TO NO.

Dear Harold:

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

~ARTERS FIP'rH MARINE DIVISION CAMP JOSEPH H. PENDLETON o CEANSlDE, CALI~BBIA

3 ~pril 1944

Was certainly glad to hear froa you. Your present assignment sounds very interesting to me for you no doubt have a ring side seat.

As to the shooting the opportunity to practice at Quancico made it possible to keep in fair shape but I think with the job I now have the shooting days are over. I read of so e accounts of your qualification firing some time ago and noticed that you came through with an excellent score each time"the ability to put them in when it was necessary has never been lost. What you should do with the skeptics is have them put up a little side money and conduct a match of your own. I have always felt that you were the toughest person in the world to beat when the pressure is on.

The last Rifleman magazine had accounts of the deaths of two persons with whom you were acquainted, one was Cal LLoyd and the other Harry Renshaw. Lloyd disappeared from home at Qnantico shortly before Christmas and was found in the woods on the reservation about five weeks later. Evidently he was despondent over the loss of a son. Renshaw was killed in a plane crash in India.

Life at Quantico was very pleasant for there were many old friends stationed there. The job I had was assisting in running the Ordnance School, the)" finally made me the dean and shortly thereafter I was transferred to the West «bast. I am doing ordnance work in the Division and am well pleased with the job. Not long ago while at San Francisco I read that your skipper had passed through and thought perhaps that you aay have been along. It was illpossible to learn hO'f to reach you so gave up.

How~e Esther and the children? Greet them for me when you write. Hav, ~ou been able to get home to see the family at all and to do any hunting1

June, the Wife, and I drove to MinneapGlis last November so I made a trip to the woods and had fair luck at deer. I talked with Johnny Crew and also friends of Ernie'S. Mylk is now a captain in the Army. Don Gibson wrote not long ago from India, he has been there for about two years so I believe he is anxious

Page 5: UNITED STATES ENVELOPE COMPANY · el..aert d. thomas, utah, chairman david i. walsh. mass. james e. murray. mont. claude pepper, f1..a. allen j. ellender, la. wster hill, ala

to get back home. Con Schmitt was working at the Twin City Ordnance Plant for a time but is now doing other defense work. Col. Cotton has now retired so sp~nds his spare time giving marksmanship instruction to inductees and Boy Scouts. Owen Emswiler, John Oien, Morse and others of the Minneapolis gang are still pounding out good scores. The St.Paul Club is going strong, they are celebrating their club birthday this month, I believe it is the fifteenth.year for them.

I met Captain, now Colonel. Porter P.Wiggins in washington the summer of 42'. He asked about you and the rest of hhe old team. He is the only one of the former officers that were on duty at school whom I have met. Sgt. Lowery of Headquarters of the 88th Diyision (Res.) of Minneapolis was stationed at 1hshington for some time so we talked over old times with him, he holds the rank of Lt.Colonel, he worked hard for it.

Am also looking forward to the time when we may talk things over. Perhaps a two man team match can be arranged, I'll furnish the 8lIIJlunit,ion. boatloads of it, so keep your eye open for two offhand shots who may feel like taking us on.

In the meantime. Good Luck and

Lt.Comdr. H.E.Stassen, USNR., Staff, Commander South Pacific. FPO., San Francisco. Calif.

Kindest regards

Dear Harold:

Just a lin e to ackno'viledge yours of the 3rd and to thank you very much indeed for your kind thought of the new Senator from Massachusetts. I was not only glad to have your congratulations, but particularly glad to hear from you and to know that you are well and busy. I should say the news from your section of the world is ver.; good. My son-in-law just returned after a year and a half in eomnand of a PT boat and his story is extremely interesting - and I may say encouraging.

I am enjoying my werle here in the Senate very much indeed and hope I can do sane good on the way through. You probably don't know, but I do not expect to run in the fall, but Leverett does and as I can't see anybody on the horizon capable of beating him I expect he will take the seat next January 3rd. Now if the home front can do as well as the boys in the lines, I guess we will have no cause of complaint in any direction.

I hope all goes well with you and I wish you the best of luck always.

Sincerely yours,

SW:l(
