What is the United Nations?
• The UN is an international organization of countries set up to promote international peace, security, and cooperation
• 192 countries are members of the UN– Any “peace-loving” nation can become a member– 5 permanent members (China, France, United
States, United Kingdom and Russia)– 10 non-permanent members
Promote = Encourage or supportPermanent = lasting, standing, stable
What does the UN do?
• Helps to resolve international conflicts• Promotes respect for human rights• Helps propose solutions to global issues
(hunger, education, gender rights…)
What does the UN NOT do
• Create laws• The UN does not have an army. When there is
a need for a military the member states contribute armed forces.
Where is the UN?
• New York City!! • BUT…the UN belongs to every member
country and the security and postal service is autonomous
Autonomous = self-governed, seperate, apart, individual
Is there a leader of the UN?
• Secretary-General-Ban Ki-Moon (South Korea)• 5 years• Warns the UN about security threats and can
pose discussion topics that are important for the UN
