Congregational Care

Hospital Visitation:

In James 5:14 we read, “are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them.” The Pastors and Stephen Ministers would like to carry on this tradition of prayer with you when you are in the hospital. There are three ways you can notify us of your hospitalization:

1. When you enter the hospital, identify on the forms that you are a member of our church and/or United Methodist. Your name will then appear on our daily hospital list.

2. Call the church directly or have a friend/family member do that for you.

a. During office hours call: 776-8821. b. After office hours call: 410-9982.

3. Let the Hospital Chaplain know of your church affiliation and he or she will notify us.

Joys and Concerns of the church can be found in the Sunday morning bulletin or in our e-mail prayer chain. If you would like to receive a

bulletin to your home or be added to the prayer chain e-mail list to pray for concerns in our

congregation, please contact Pastor Melanie at 776-8821 or [email protected].

Help Surround FUMC in Prayer! In March the Prayer Team began a program to help guide our congregation in prayer by creating monthly prayer tents for people to pick-up in worship and take home. Each tent has a month-long focus based on the needs of our congregation. Prayer is a practice of vital church congregations, so please join us as we lift the concerns and celebrations of our church up to God. If you have not already, pick up a tent outside the Sanctuary or from an usher on Sunday morning.

Wednesday Evening Communion Service

Weekly Wednesday evening

communion service meets at

5:30pm in the Harris Activity

Center Chapel. Come receive

a mid-week spiritual boost with

your FUMC friends and family.

Congregational Items of Interest YES! I Want to Help Raise the Roof!

You can not miss the scaffolding on both the east and west side of our Sanctuary and the workers on the west side of the roof. The project to fix the roof includes removing all of the red tile, replacing the deteriorated underlayment membrane, and then replacing the red tile. The project is expected to be finished by the end of April, contingent upon the weather.

Thank You! To date we have raised $130,590 toward the total cost of $207,000. Many thanks to those who have already given or pledged, and many thanks to those who will soon give or pledge. It's great to belong to a Church which responds in such fine fashion.

Church Staff Transition

The refrain in the old Church hymn, "Count Your Blessings", includes these words, "Count your blessings, name them one by one; count your blessings, see what God has done." I hope when you are counting your blessings you think of your church family. We have the blessing of God's Holy Spirit as we worship and serve in his name, we have the blessing of Christian friends and community, and hopefully you also count our Church staff as a blessing. We are fortunate to have talented and dedicated people serving as Church staff members.

As a church family we graciously welcome new Church staff members, and as a church family we gratefully say farewell when it is time for change. Camrin Dowell has served as our youth director since August of last year. When she arrived we knew there was a possibility that she would be accepted into graduate school and that her energies might directed to this pursuit. Sure enough, she began her graduate studies in January, and her speech pathology track is very demanding. Thus, she will be resigning effective May 31. The Staff Parish Relations Committee has met and has devised a transitional timeline.

Camrin, along with her husband, Ryan have been a great blessing to many of our youth and families. We thank them greatly for their service, and we know God will lead them directly to where they need to be. We pray God's abundant blessings upon them.

Thank you for your prayers as the Staff Parish Relations Committee begins the search process for a new youth director.

In Christ,

Jamie McAtee, Staff Parish Chairperson

Help Us Secure a Match of up to $10,000 on Grow Green Match Day, March 22

Grow Green Match Day on Monday, April 22, holds incredible opportunity for Shepherd’s Crossing. On that day, Greater Manhattan Community Foundation will match donations made to our endowment fund—our long-term savings—and with your help, we could potentially receive a $10,000 match.

Here’s how Match Day works:

Come to the event and make a donation. Date: April 22, 2013 (Earth Day) Time: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Place: Colony Square Office Complex Atrium, 555 Poyntz Avenue

Matching funds will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis, and participating nonprofits compete for the $40,000 total pot ($10,000 max per organization).

Matching funds could run out at some point during the day, so plan to come early. But if you can’t make it in the morning, come when it’s convenient because we could win hourly drawings and cash prizes for bringing in the most donors overall.

Individual contributions ranging from $25 to $1,000 per organization will be matched at $.50 per $1, so a donation of $1,000 can receive a $500 match. Of course we will gladly accept donations greater than $1,000!

In order to receive a match, a check must be made payable to Greater Manhattan Community Foundation and delivered in person to Colony Square. A separate form will be used to indicate which endowment(s) will benefit. For more details, visit www.mcfks.org.

Building our endowment is critical for our future, but we still face monthly expenses. So we still need contributions to our annual campaign. Grow Green Match Day is an opportunity to dig deeper, to grow our endowment exponentially, so that we can enrich our people and programs for even greater impact.

This is a chance to multiply the difference we make, and it’s truly a missed opportunity if we don’t take full advantage. Your gift is vital for helping us maximize the match.

Mission Moments

Change the World T-Shirts Available This year, the Mission Team is making T-shirts available for purchase to volunteers and others who support Change the World and community service, but may not be able to volunteer on Sunday, May 5. The shirts are priced at $10, which covers the cost of the shirt along with a small donation to help cover expenses for the community service effort. The all-cotton T-shirts are teal blue with a yellow logo, front and back, and available in medium, large and extra-large. Shirts will be available during fellowship time on April 21 (if supplies allow). Special orders and remaining shirts will be available for pick-up or sale in Fellowship Hall May 5.

Time to Sign-Up for Change the World, Sunday, May 5 With FUMC’s springtime effort to Change the World scheduled Sunday, May 5 just a few weeks away, the Mission Team invites – and encourages – church members and friends to sign up to give back to our community by helping friends and neighbors with various needs. Requests to date include projects at FUMC’s Harris Activity Center and on the Church campus; installation of a bench and small landscape projects at Ogden Friendship House; a small moving job, and springtime yard and garden cleanup at three homes. All are welcome, and encouraged to take part in this special opportunity, said Dan Myers, who is providing purple sign-up sheets that will be available at the “Welcome” desk (Poyntz entrance) before services on April 21 and 28, and at the T-shirt sales table (April 21). Volunteers (wearing Change the World T-shirts) also will be circulating with purple pad and pen in hand during fellowship time April 21. Volunteer shifts are scheduled from 10 am until noon, and from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Volunteers also are invited to share food and fellowship during a complimentary hot lunch, with serving to begin at noon. According to Myers, there are many ways to participate, as interests and skills will be considered in assigning volunteers. And, if yard work, small repairs, painting, etc., are not a good fit for your skills, the lunch bunch also will appreciate assistance in preparing the meal, serving and cleaning up. Cookie baking also will be appreciated. If unable to participate, but wish to support this community-service event, financial contributions also will be appreciated to offset costs of planning and managing the community service project. Dan has set an ambitious goal – 250 volunteers – and anticipates that there may be room for additional projects. If you have a need or know of someone who could use a little help, please contact Dan at [email protected].

Food Truck Provides Nutrition on Wheels Thanks to the 30 volunteers who participated in distributing Harvesters’ March mobile food pantry delivery. According to David Miller, FUMC volunteer coordinator for the food distribution program, 169 households benefitted in March, with the food pantry serving 686 people, including 340 adults, ages 18 and older; 276 children and teens younger than 18 years of age, and 70 older adults, ages 65 and older. The monthly food distribution effort takes place at Cico Park in the drive-thru area north of Pottorf Hall on the third Tuesday of every month. Volunteers are asked to please arrive around 9:30 a.m. Distribution is usually complete by noon, as many hands make light work.

Prairieland Foods Can Offer Savings on Groceries FUMC members and friends often can save on food bills when participating in the monthly Prairieland Food packaging and distribution program. Monthly menus, which typically include five meats and seasonal fruits and vegetables, can be purchased as a “Prairie Pak” for $29; specialty foods, such as a recent “Cheesecake Lover’s Dream,” offering four cheesecakes with 14 servings each (produced by a well-known company) and priced at $27 also are available. Two hours of volunteering in church or community are requested of participants, with an additional hour requested for specialty packs. Volunteer time is not requested when giving a love gift of food for Ogden Friendship House, as many in the Church do. More information is available at www.prairielandfood.com and from Sue Rice (537-0378).

FUMC Garden Several people are still waiting for the proper ground temperature (it seems to change every day) to begin work in the FUMC Garden at the Community Gardens. This opportunity will provide some food for our Wednesday night meals, fellowship, sacred time with creation, and creation theology conversations. If you are interested in helping with the garden or for more information contact pastor Patrick McLaughlin at 776-8821 ext. 27 or [email protected].

E-Bay for Missions ‘Tis the season to do a little spring cleaning, and sift through items no longer needed – or wanted. Before tossing unwanted items, please consider contacting Cindy Burr. She is a FUMC member who volunteers to sell collectibles and other unique items to raise money for Church mission projects, including listing items donated to the Mark Down for Missions, money from which will go to the youth. One item was a child’s doll, purchased for $2, and stored in its original box, which sold for more than $200. A high-quality watch no longer wanted by a family brought several hundred dollars, as did a dusty souvenir from Chicago’s Century of Progress. Burr said old watches, 35 MM cameras from the 1970s, dolls, toys, clothing (including hats) from the 1960s, record players and even small sewing machines sell well. According to Burr, there also is a demand for unusual Hallmark items, sports memorabilia, and, of course, K-State and other University items. For more information, contact Burr at 537-2268. If desired, donors may request a receipt for a tax deduction when items are sold.

1. Purchase a New Reloadable plastic gift card from the FUMC Groceries for God Program.

2. Upload your newly purchased plastic card for any amount up to $500.00 at your favorite Dillons check stand with cash, check or major credit card. This must be done in a separate transaction.

3. All current store purchases are covered. (Excludes: money orders, stamps, Western Union and lottery tickets.) 4. FUMC Groceries for God Program will receive a 5% rebate on all covered purchases from any Dillons.

Great News from Dillons! Plastic Gift Card for

Groceries for God Program

Groceries for God Scholarships Pending With 77 members participating, March receipts for FUMC’s Groceries for God Program totaled $14,725. Rebates from the purchases for the month yielded $736.25, said J. Lester Hooper, who, with his wife, Olive, coordinate the program. Funds raised are used to fund unbudgeted projects, said Hooper, who noted that he has two grant applications for funding currently under consideration. For more information about the local grocery card program or purchase of the cards, please check at the Groceries for God Table in Fellowship Hall or with the Hoopers (539-6855).Participating is easy, and beneficial to many participating in Church programs and projects, Hooper said.

Mission Calendar - Coming in June: Monday, June 24: Lions’ Club Dinner, an annual FUMC Fund Raiser for Anapra. Sunday, June 30 - Monday, July 1: Bike and Build, a visiting group in support of affordable housing. Watch for more information in future newsletters.

Groceries For God Did you know there is a way to shop for groceries and help the church at the same time? The Groceries For God program allows you to buy gift cards for Dillons, Hy-Vee or Ray’s directly from our church and those stores give us a percentage back from those gift cards. There is no additional cost to you or the church for the cards. The percentage given to the church is used to fund unbudgeted items for FUMC mission and other projects. It’s a win-win program. Groceries for God cards are sold each Sunday, or call J. Lester and Olive Hooper at 539-6855 to purchase. Interested in funding for an unbudgeted item? Contact the church office at 776-8821 for an application.
