We now have 625 members, which is the highest number ever.

do not hesitate to call, write or email. We also have in place
31 Area Directors and our local meetings are gaining strength
in keeping with our increase in membership. Also we now have eight UFO au-
thors who have contributed their books to our lending library. Please let me
know if you want to check out a book. There is no charge.

I am aware that we are getting a lot of new members.
Congratulations to all of you who have just joined us. That
said, it is wonderful to hear from you with a story of your fly-
ing experiences. I need your story along with a color photo of
you and your airplane. The older members who have had to
quit flying really like to see what the younger active members are doing.
Please keep sending me this information. Bill Webber Vice President, Publisher.

The Jump Seat
The UFO is in a climb mode. Many of our new members
are ―young‖ which is so encouraging. Nancy Warren is our
first national Director. She is a lovely lady and has an
amazing international background. Each of us is a UFO
crew member on our wonderful flight through life. Please
recruit one new UFO member. We are seeking suggestions from the member-
ship as to how we can add to your enjoyment as a part of the UFO. Kindly
send your ideas to me ([email protected]) or to your Area Director

Airplane For Sale
Do you still have a paper pilot’s license? Most of us
do. Well, it is no longer any good. The FAA says as
of March 31, 2010, you need to get a plastic one from
them. It costs $2.00 and there are two ways to do this:
Go online at http://www.faa.gov.licenses_certificates/
airman_certification/airmen/services and fill out the
form. Or sign a letter with this information - Name,
Date and Place of Birth, Social Security Number or
Certificate Number, and the reason you need a replace-
ment. Don’t mail them your original license.

UFO MEETING IN HAWAII ON JAN. 6, 2010
The first UFO local meeting in 2010 happened in Florida on January 22 at Milton Garden Inn in
Lakeland, FL. Area Director Don Newman (86) got this group together. There were 30 mem-
bers and spouses. They came at 11:00 to register, ate lunch and each was allowed 5 minutes to
tell his or her story. There was one who they couldn't stop talking for 20 minutes. Light Sport
Planes was discussed. In 5 years, they have come a long way. Congratulations to all of you for

Colin Griffin (90), our AD there emails: ―Greetings in response to your email
from the land of open spaces and arriving boat people. Personally I am going
gangbusters, made the big nine-0 last September with marbles to spare and an
RV6 to boot. Lovely little bug crusher. About new members – I have one on the books, he is
MELBOURNIAN, Charles Morrison. We have yet to meet, but he and I have exchanged greet-
ings on the blower twice. Despite frequent adverts, at the moment we are a two man band, but I
am an incurable optimist and continue to advertise for new members. Meanwhile, I have joined
some blokes and purchased a YAK 52 for some adventure and joy riding—sideline, won’t make
shekels but sure will have fun. And they are smart, top pilots, two LAMIES all with electrical
expertise.‖ (Question from Editor: How come we don't talk like that?)
Australia
Bill Bredar (85), AD for Colorado and Wyoming put together a meeting at the Perfect Landing
Restaurant overlooking the ramp at the airport. Bill put together the first local program 2 years
ago for the UFO’s. He is planning another one in 3 months. Pat Halloran (81) talked about
Mach 3 and meeting with Jimmy Doolittle. Contributors to the 2 hour program were Ted Wil-
kinson (74) , brother of Lee Wilkinson (82), Anita Hessin(89), and Jim Barrow (83).

Nancy Warren (81) Columbus, IN
Here you see Nancy Warren (81) with her cousin Mike David (84).
Mike doesn’t fly anymore. They grew up together in Nashville,
IN. Mike started flying in 1945 and was in three wars flying eve-
rything that was made. He flew 100 missions in Korea and 154 in
Vietnam. Nancy started flying in 1985 and seldom saw Mike. In
November, they got together at the airport and
thought it would be great to fly with each other.
What a wonderful feeling it was for Nancy to see
Mike take the controls of her Cardinal. That’s a
wonderful story on how great it is to have cousins
and fly.
Nancy just signed up as our Area Director for Indi-
ana. All of the things about Nancy are too much for
just one page. She is a writer of books and articles
for flying magazines, etc. She is a Women Air force Service Pilot and on March 9, she and 180
others were in Washington D.C. to receive the Congressional Gold Medal ,the highest civilian
honor available.
She wrote about women in aviation for her column this month in her local newspaper that ap-
peared in March 21, 2010. The story is about the WASP during WWII and the similar group of
women who did the same thing in Russia. The Russian women not only flew all airplanes during
the war, they flew combat besides. Her description of the hardship they went through was unbe-
lievable. There just isn’t room to put all of the story into this edition of the newsletter, but it will
be sent out to you in an email for all of those with a computer. Will advise you when this avail-
THE HIGH FLYERS
Ernie Wakehouse (87) Portland, OR
Ernie was stationed in Korea in 1951. Beginning on September 15 until
December 16, he flew 100 missions in those 90 days. All were low level
flights and many of his comrades didn’t make it back.
As a retired foreign car dealer he likes to fly all over Oregon and Wash-
ington for lunch in his ’65 S Model Bonanza. Nice going Ernie !!!!
Chuck Downey (85) of
Poplar Grove, IL is
someone we have writ-
ten about before. He keeps coming up with something new
all of the time. First of all, he is Area Director for IL. He is
planning a meeting on July 23. The place is Poplar Grove
(C77) at the Wings and Wheels Museum. He now spends his
winters in Florida and is a big part of the CAF in Deland,
FL. Pictured here, he is working on the wing of a TBM
Avenger ad WWII Torpedo Bomber. Chuck’s flying began
when he was 18 and joined the Navy. He is the youngest pilot
the Navy ever had. He was just a few week younger than our Former US President, George H. Bush. In
Poplar Grove, he designed his house at the airport to live in and hanger his airplane—A 1941 Meyers OTW
Vintage biplane, which he flew across the country last year.
