writing research proposal.

Research Proposal Writing

Research proposal is a comprehensive and careful planned, blue-print, written by the investigator.

Importance:

1. Plan the research process efficiently,

2. Guide the researcher through a systematic set of procedures,

3. Communicate the researcher’s goal,

4. Provide a basis by which the value of the planned research can be

evaluated by funding agencies, academic advisors and thesis

committee.

Checklist

Is the problem significant enough to warrant scientific

investigation?

Will the solution to the problem contribute to the existing

body of the knowledge or lead to future research?

Is the problem feasible in terms of financial resources,

time, facilities available and expertise of the investigator?

Introduction The first chapter of research proposal has many section:

Back ground Literature review Rational of study Problem statement Objectives Hypothesis Operational definitions

Researcher should include a brief introduction to the

chapter which familiar the reader with the problem.

Literature Review

It is mandatory that this process be completed prior to conducting the research study.

It serves important functions to both the researcher and the reader.

It ensures that the duplication of the previous studies is prevented.

It allows the researcher to become familiar with what is already known about the problem and aware of both supporting and opposing point of view,

Past research provides useful information on previous tested

hypothesis, operational definitions, data collection

instruments and research design relevant to the research

problem,

The literature review better enables the researcher to interpret

the findings and draw conclusion based on the existing body

of knowledge.

Literature Review

The review should be organize by discussing the

1. International studies

2. Regional studies

3. Local literature

with known facts and unanswered questions, whichwould justify your purpose of your study.

Significance of the problem

1. Researcher justifies the worth of the research,

2. Supporting evidence to describe the magnitude of the

problem and impact of the solution is provided.

3. Such evidence should be cited from the literature,

4. Recommendation for study by other researchers,

5. Lack of related published research

Statement of the problem

This section is simply one declarative sentence or question

that summarizes the previous section by clearly stating

what the problem is?

For example: Single declarative or inquisitive sentence

stating the research question. e.g. What is the burden of

Tuberculosis in rural Sindh?)

Hypothesis

It could be a educated guess or proposition that is posted by

the researcher for purpose of testing.

Either the study hypothesis or null hypothesis should be

stated.

HA : There is an association between Obesity & Diabetes Mellitus

type 2 in Pakistani population.

HO: There is no association between Obesity & Diabetes Mellitus

type 2 in Pakistani population.

Developing the Objectives Identifying the question to be answered

Final & precise statement which will be answered

by carrying out research

Depending on the scope, it can have general

objectives and specific objectives

To find out the association between Obesity

(BMI>30) and Diabetes Mellitus type 2.

Operational definitions

Operational definitions explain the terms in observable

and quantifiable language so the reader clearly

understand the terminology used in the research

proposal.

e.g. ‘cross sectional’)

2.2 Study Setting: Mention where the study will be conducted e.g. Hospital (Private or government)

2.3 Study Duration: Mention starting and ending month with year

2.4 Study Population: Describe what is population of interest e.g. general population (with either age or education category) and then mention Inclusion and Exclusion criteria

Data Collection

Process of collecting required information to meet the research objectives

Informed consent must be taken.Step essential for data collection,

1. Selecting appropriate data-gathering instrument that

will reliable.

2. Describe procedures to be implemented for the

actual collection of data.

3. Plan the timetable for data collection.

Analysis and Statistical TreatmentThe researcher constructs a framework for organizing,

analyzing, and interpreting the raw data collected by answering the following questions:

1. What type of data does the hypothesis or research

question implicate?

2. Will the data be categorical, countable or measurement?

3. How will the data be tabulated?

4. What statistic will best describe and interpret the data?
