RIGHTEOUS AMONG THE WICKED “And finding there was greater happiness and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the fathers” (Abraham 1:2). This is what Abraham said about his childhood in the city of Ur. He grew up in a very wicked society. Very few people understood the gospel. Almost no one was righteous. Does that sound a little like today? It was! Poor Abraham. Even his father was disobedient. Instead of following Jesus, Abraham’s father (Terah), followed the religion of the Egyptians. The priest of Pharaoh performed human sacrifices! No wonder Abraham wanted to find “greater happiness and peace and rest!” Despite the wicked world around him, Abraham just wanted to be good. He wanted the priesthood. He wanted to be happy. Read the story of what happened to Abraham in the city of Ur in the verses on the right. Can you believe what happened to him? His fathers (family) were unrighteous and had turned to worshipping idols. When Abraham spoke out against idol worship and human sacrifice, what happened to him? ______________________________________

ABRAHAM 1

2 And, finding there was greater happiness

and peace and rest for me, I sought for the

blessings of the fathers, and the right

whereunto I should be ordained to

administer the same (the priesthood);

having been myself a follower of

righteousness, desiring also to be one who

possessed great knowledge, and to be a

greater follower of righteousness...and to

be a father of many nations, a prince of

peace, and desiring to receive instructions,

and to keep the commandments of God…4

I sought for mine appointment unto the

Priesthood…

5 My fathers, having turned from their

righteousness, and from the holy

commandments which the Lord their God

had given unto them, unto the worshiping

of the gods of the heathen, utterly refused

to hearken to my voice; 6 For their hearts

were set to do evil ...7 Therefore they

turned their hearts to the sacrifice of the

heathen in offering up their children unto

these dumb idols, and hearkened not unto

my voice, but endeavored to take away my

life by the hand of the priest of Elkenah.

12 And it came to pass that the priests laid

violence upon me, that they might slay

me…

15 And as they lifted up their hands upon

me, that they might offer me up and take

away my life, behold, I lifted up my voice

unto the Lord my God, and the Lord

hearkened and heard, and he filled me with

the vision of the Almighty, and the angel

of his presence stood by me, and

immediately unloosed my bands; 16 And

his voice was unto me: Abraham,

Abraham, behold, my name is Jehovah,

and I have heard thee, and have come

down to deliver thee, and to take thee away

from thy father’s house, and from all thy

kinsfolk, into a strange land which thou

knowest not of.

ABRAHAM SEES STARS Because of Abraham’s faithfulness, God was able to use him “as a means for doing much good,” just as He has promised he will do with you. God taught Abraham many things. He gave Abraham a “knowledge of the beginning of the creation, and also of the planets and of the stars” (Abraham 1:31).

Read the story of what Abraham saw in vision in the verses on the right. Circle the promise that the Lord gave to Abraham. The Lord showed Abraham the “intelligences,” or spirits, that were organized before the world was created. These were the spirit children of Heavenly Father! God saw that the souls were good. He told Abraham that he was one of those spirits. So were you and I!

ABRAHAM 3—GOD’S CHILDREN

11 Thus I, Abraham, talked with the Lord,

face to face, as one man talketh with

another; and he told me of the works

which his hands had made;

12 And he said unto me: My son, my son

(and his hand was stretched out), behold I

will show you all these. And he put his

hand upon mine eyes, and I saw those

things which his hands had made, which

were many; and they multiplied before

mine eyes, and I could not see the end

thereof.

13 And he said unto me: This is Shinehah,

which is the sun. And he said unto me:

Kokob, which is star. And he said unto me:

Olea, which is the moon. And he said unto

me: Kokaubeam, which signifies stars, or

all the great lights, which were in the

firmament of heaven.

14 And it was in the night time when the

Lord spake these words unto me: I will

multiply thee, and thy seed after thee, like

unto these; and if thou canst count the

number of sands, so shall be the number of

thy seeds.

21 I dwell in the midst of them all; I now,

therefore, have come down unto thee to

declare unto thee the works which my

hands have made, wherein my wisdom

excelleth them all…

22 Now the Lord had shown unto me,

Abraham, the intelligences that were

organized before the world was; and

among all these there were many of the

noble and great ones;

23 And God saw these souls that they were

good, and he stood in the midst of them,

and he said: These I will make my rulers;

for he stood among those that were spirits,

and he saw that they were good; and he

said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of

them; thou wast chosen before thou wast

born.
