Moving to music appeals to our most basic instincts. Throughout history, people have expressed themselves through

dance in rituals and ceremonies, on social occasions with friends and family and as professional artists. Nowadays, clubbing is one of the most popular forms of socialising for young people and TV programmes like Fame Academy are very popular and have encouraged people to try dancing themselves. Medical experts agree on the benefi ts: ‘Dancing is a great way to put physical activity into our lives. It stimulates the senses, it’s great fun and it’s good for our bodies and minds.’

Several kinds of dance are especially popular at the moment. ‘I go to Flamenco classes every week and more people are joining all the time, both men and women,’ says Monica, 21. ‘Some people get rid of stress after a day’s work; some want to be professionals. It’s really an art and takes years to perfect. There’s an annual fl amenco festival in London and you

see there how fl amenco is getting more popular every year. There are still those who perform it in the traditional way but others are experimenting with a fusion of styles, mixing fl amenco with jazz, modern dance, even ballet. To me, fl amenco is the ultimate in self-expression. It’s all about the way people feel. When I dance fl amenco, I feel as if I’m dancing my life.’

‘Capoeira is a sort of Brazilian martial art but, actually, it’s much more than that,’ explains Micky, 24. ‘It originated nearly 400 years ago as a form of self-defence amongst African slaves. They disguised it as a folk dance. Brazilians say they ‘play’ capoeira, like a game, not a fi ght. It’s quite diffi cult to learn and I don’t do it just to get fi t; it’s the mind-body-spirit connection that begins to change you. I used to be very shy but I’ve lost some of my inhibitions – I enjoy life more since I started capoeira. It’s helped me to fi nd my identity. Anyone can fi nd some sort of identity in capoeira. For instance, a big city person might see it as a form of self-defence, while for others it’s a way of life.’

People of all ages are discovering the pleasures of moving their bodies to the rhythms of music. Is this a temporary craze?

c My salsa class

I’d always liked dancing but I’d never had the confi dence to join a dance class. Then two years ago a friend told me about her salsa class. She complained that there weren’t enough men in the class and she persuaded me to try it.

The fi rst day I felt so embarrassed and clumsy. Everyone seemed to know what they were doing except me but luckily I didn’t step on anyone’s toes. After a few weeks I had learnt the basic steps and quickly began to improve.

Then one night after class the teacher invited us to go with her to a salsa club. When we arrived, it was hot and crowded but the energy and atmosphere of the place was magical. Everyone was dancing madly. I asked a girl to dance and amazingly she accepted. That was it. For the next four hours I didn’t stop. I must have danced with about twenty different girls! By the end of the night I was totally exhausted but extremely happy.

Since that night I’ve been to several different salsa clubs but I’ll never forget that fi rst evening – the best I’ve ever had!

It’s often said that without good journalism, we wouldn’t have an informed public. But today, when more and more people are getting their information from more immediate, visual media, such as the Internet, satellite and twenty-four-hour news channels, what is the role of a journalist and what qualities should a good journalist have?

There are some simple, basic rules that all journalists have to learn. For example, when writing a news story, the fi rst paragraph should contain enough information to give the reader a good overview of the story and then, as the story goes on, the details are explained. Reporters learn to ask the fi ve ‘W’ questions: what, who, where, when and why. Most good news stories provide answers to all of these questions, and often report the words spoken by the people involved in the story. Finally, journalists learn to keep their sentences and paragraphs short and not to use too much descriptive language.Yet, many people are very critical of journalists. Of course there are certainly bad journalists, just like there are bad hair stylists, bad architects and bad politicians but the majority of journalists are trying to do a good job because they believe that what they are doing is important – getting good information, reporting what they see and trying to tell the truth. Yes, they make mistakes, like any other professional whose job involves making dozens of decisions every day. But the key thing is that good journalists recognise their mistakes and correct them.It is important to distinguish between a journalist and a media personality. For example, talk show presenters are not generally journalists and that is not a problem as long as they are clear about it. When some talk show personalities try to act as if they were journalists to make their personal opinions appear as fact, that is a problem. And fi nally, we should recognise that there is a certain self-interest in our attitude to journalists. Most people are anxious to talk to them when it’s to their advantage, but quick to criticise when they write about something that we don’t want to talk about.
