Magnets

Some materials have the ability to attractsome metals. This ability is called magnetism.Magnets have this ability.

Page 4: Unit 7:Magnetism

There are two types of magnets:

• Natural magnets. They are minerals that attract iron, such as the magnetite.

• Artificial magnets. People make magnets from metals. For example, the magnets we use on the fridge.

Page 5: Unit 7:Magnetism

All magnets have two parts: north pole (N) and south pole (S).

Page 6: Unit 7:Magnetism

Magnets featuresThey have two important features:

• When we break a magnet in half, we get two magnets with their corresponding north and south poles. You can’t separate the poles of a magnet.

Page 7: Unit 7:Magnetism

• When we put two magnets together, two different things can happen:

– Same poles repel each other.

– Different poles attract each other.

The magnetic poles of the Earth

The Earth’s core is made up of iron and nickel. Because of this, the Earth acts like a magnet.

It has a north magnetic pole and a south magnetic pole.

Page 11: Unit 7:Magnetism

We can detect the Earth magnetism with a compass. The compass has a magnet needle that always points to the north magnetic pole

Uses of magnetism

Magnetism is very useful for:• Orientation, with the compasses.• Magnets. They are used in lock doors, bags,

electric motors and clocks.• Storing information, such as in credit cards,

computer discs and mobile phones.• Control. It is used in clothes and books to prevent

theft.• Identification. There are magnetic strips on train

and plane tickets or in medical cards.
