Christmas (Dec.25) Christmas is a holiday shared and celebrated by many

religions. It is a day that has an effect on the entire world. To many people, it is a favorite time of the year involving

gift giving, parties and feasting. Christmas is a holiday that unifies almost all of professing Christendom.

The spirit of Christmas causes people to decorate their homes and churches, cut down trees and bring them into their homes, decking them with silver and gold.

In the light of that tree, families make merry and give gifts one to another.

Santa Claus◆Santa Claus and St. Nicholas The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an

epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus’ words “to sell what you own and give the money to the poor”, Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

◆Legends about Santa Claus There are many legends about Santa Clause and his

kindness and love. The following two stories are selected just for class use.

Valentine’s Day (Feb.14)

In pagan days, February 14 was celebrated in anticipation of the love rites of spring. Tradition held that on that day, doves coupled and owls paired. Taking their cue from the birds, single men and women would hold toga parties during which the winners of a love lottery would slip off to make love.

In Rome, the emperor Claudius was said to have imprisoned St. Valentine in 269 for Christian faith. On the eve of his execution, Valentine, who had fallen in love with his jailer's blind daughter, wrote her a sonnet in ink that he squeezed from violets. His words are said to have made the blind woman see again, but her father was unimpressed. The following day, he clubbed Valentine to death.

April Fool’s Day (Apr. 1)

●The origin of April Fool's Day

There are different versions as to the origin of April Fool's Day. The most widespread theory links the day to Gregorian calendar reform while others involve mythological legends or anthropological explanations.

Easter

Easter is usually in early April. This is a religious festival. On the very Sunday morning, children are busy looking for the color eggs assumed to be given by the Easter rabbit.

Page 15: Unit 6 Celebration of Holidays. Celebration of holidays We all love holidays! No matter how old we get, we all get excited about special days in our culture

The Traditions of Easter As with almost all "Christian" holidays,

Easter has been secularized and commercialized. The dichotomous nature of Easter and its symbols, however, is not necessarily a modern fabrication.

Since its conception as a holy celebration in the second century, Easter has had its non-religious side. In fact, Easter was originally a pagan festival.

Page 16: Unit 6 Celebration of Holidays. Celebration of holidays We all love holidays! No matter how old we get, we all get excited about special days in our culture

The Easter Bunny The Easter Bunny is not a modern invention. The symbol o

riginated with the pagan festival of Eastre. The goddess, Eastre, was worshipped by the Anglo-Saxons through her earthly symbol, the rabbit.

The Germans brought the symbol of the Easter rabbit to America. It was widely ignored by other Christians until shortly after the Civil War. In fact, Easter itself was not widely celebrated in America until after that time.

Page 17: Unit 6 Celebration of Holidays. Celebration of holidays We all love holidays! No matter how old we get, we all get excited about special days in our culture

The Easter Egg As with the Easter Bunny and the holiday itself, the Easter

Egg predates the Christian holiday of Easter. The exchange of eggs in the springtime is a custom that was centuries old when Easter was first celebrated by Christians.

From the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of rebirth in most cultures. Eggs were often wrapped in gold leaf or, if you were a peasant, colored brightly by boiling them with the leaves or petals of certain flowers.

Today, children hunt colored eggs and place them in Easter baskets along with the modern version of real Easter eggs -- those made of plastic or chocolate candy.

Halloween (Oct. 31)

Halloween is an annual celebration on the evening of October 31. Dancing parties are held with people wearing fancy masks.

Page 19: Unit 6 Celebration of Holidays. Celebration of holidays We all love holidays! No matter how old we get, we all get excited about special days in our culture

The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.

One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living.

Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving was about the Pilgrims, the first settlers in America. They shared the first harvest with the Indians and gave thanks.

Page 22: Unit 6 Celebration of Holidays. Celebration of holidays We all love holidays! No matter how old we get, we all get excited about special days in our culture

Traditions of Thanksgiving Day The American traditions of Thanksgiving revolve

around a huge and lavish meal, usually with Turkey as the centerpiece. For those who do not like Turkey, a Roast or Prime Rib is common. As tradition has it in most families, a special prayer of thanks precedes the meal. In many homes, family members will each mention something they are very thankful for.  Thanksgiving is a time for families to create traditions and memories that last a lifetime.

Spring Festival(Chinese New Year)

Far and away the most important

holiday in China is Spring Festival, also

known as the Chinese New Year. To the Chinese people it is as important as Christmas to people in the West. The dates for this annual celebration are determined by the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar, so the timing of the holiday varies from late January to early February.

Page 26: Unit 6 Celebration of Holidays. Celebration of holidays We all love holidays! No matter how old we get, we all get excited about special days in our culture

★January 29, 2006 is the first day of the Chinese new year.

There are three ways to name a Chinese year:

By an animal. This year is known as the Year of the Dog.There are 12 animal names; so by this system, year names are re-cycled every 12 years.

By its Formal Name (Stem-Branch). The new year is the year of bingxu. ( 丙戌 )

In the 'Stem-Branch' system, the years are named in 60-year cycles, and the Name of the Year is repeated every 60 years.2006 is the 7th year in the current 60-year cycle.

It is Year 4703 by the Chinese calendar.

Page 27: Unit 6 Celebration of Holidays. Celebration of holidays We all love holidays! No matter how old we get, we all get excited about special days in our culture

To the ordinary Chinese, the festival actually begins on the eve of the lunar New Year's Day and ends on the fifth day of the first month of the lunar calendar. But the 15th of the first month, which normally is called the Lantern Festival, means the official end of the Spring Festival in many parts of the country.

Preparations for the New Year begin the last few days of the last moon, when houses are thoroughly cleaned, debts repaid, hair cut and new clothes purchased. Houses are festooned with paper scrolls bearing auspicious antithetical couplet (as show on both side of the page) and in many homes, people burn incense at home and in the temples to pay respects to ancestors and ask the gods for good health in the coming months.

Page 28: Unit 6 Celebration of Holidays. Celebration of holidays We all love holidays! No matter how old we get, we all get excited about special days in our culture

" Guo Nian," meaning

"passing the year," is the common term among the Chinese people for celebrating the Spring Festival. It actually means greeting the new year. At midnight at the turn of the old and new year, people used to let off fire-crackers which serve to drive away the evil spirits and to greet the arrival of the new year. In an instant the whole city would be engulfed in the deafening noise of the firecrackers.

Page 29: Unit 6 Celebration of Holidays. Celebration of holidays We all love holidays! No matter how old we get, we all get excited about special days in our culture

On New Year's Eve, all the members

of families come together to feast. Jiaozi, a steamed dumpling as pictured below, is popular in the north, while southerners favor a sticky sweet glutinous rice pudding called nian gao.

New Year’s DayANCIENT NEW YEARS The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays.

It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible cresent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring).

The beginning of spring is a logical time to start a new year. After all, it is the season of rebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary.

The Romans continued to observe the new year in late March, but their calendar was continually tampered with by various emperors so that the calendar soon became out of synchronization with the sun.

In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the new year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the new year. But in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.

Writing personal letters People write personal letters to thank

or congratulate someone, share news with them, pass on interesting information, or describe what has happened. So writing personal letters is a way of keeping in touch with absent friends or expressing your feelings in certain social situations. For this reason, learning how to write personal letters will help students develop friendly relations with others.
