Pause the CD when the children hear melon and encourage them to mime holding a telescope as they focus on the melon flashcard. Repeat with the rest of the flashcards. Play the CD again and encourage the children to mime eating the fruit when they hear the corresponding word.

2 Play Find the treasure chest.• Put the fruit flashcards in the treasure chest. Choose two volunteers using The hands up chant (see Introduction page 21). Say Close your eyes! Hide the treasure chest in the classroom. Get Captain Jack to say Where’s my treasure chest? Encourage the volunteers to hold hands and look for the treasure chest. When they get close to the treasure chest encourage the class to shout Yes! and when they get further away No! (If you wish to revise hot and cold, ask the children to say these words instead of Yes! and No!)

• When the children find the treasure chest get Captain Jack to say Thank you! Do you want to see my treasure? Encourage the children to say Yes! Reveal the fruit flashcards one by one and encourage the children to name them.

3 Play The touching game.• Bring in some real fruit in a bag. Blindfold the children and encourage them to take a fruit out of the bag, touch it and guess what it is. Repeat with the other fruit and different children.

• Continue with the rest of the fruit flashcards until the children are confident of the game.

4 Play Let’s go on a treasure hunt! (Flip over Book page 3)• Point to the treasure map at the beginning of the Flip over Book and say Look! It’s Captain Jack’s treasure hunt! Get Captain Jack to fly around.

• Say Let’s follow the green path! Walk your fingers along the green path. Stop at the six fruits along the path and encourage the children to name them.

• Point to the treasure chest at the end of the path. Get Captain Jack to say I can see the treasure chest! Shall we see what the treasure is today? Take the treasure flashcard for this unit out of the treasure chest. Show it to the children. Say Look!

5 Say The story time chant. (CD 1 track 22)• Say It’s story time and open the palms of your hands as if opening a book. Say the chant and do the actions. Encourage the children to join in. (See Unit 1 Lesson 2 activity 5 for the audio script.)

Extra activities

1 Play Guess the picture!• Take a piece of (red) chalk (or board marker if you have a white board) and start drawing an apple on the board. Draw it very slowly and stop every once in a while. Say What’s this? Encourage the children to guess the picture. If the children guess correctly get Captain Jack to say That’s right! Very good! It’s an apple! What colour is the apple? Encourage the children to say Red! Say That’s right! A red apple! Repeat with green pear, red cherry, yellow lemon and green melon.

2 Play Taste the fruit!• Cut small pieces of apples, oranges, pears, cherries, lemons and melon. Point to the fruit and encourage the children to name the fruit.

• Blindfold a child and help the child to choose a piece of fruit and taste it. Encourage the child to guess the fruit.

3 Play Jumping fruit!• Show the fruit flashcards and encourage the children to name them.

• Choose six volunteers using The hands up chant (see Introduction page 21). Ask them to crouch down in a row in front of the class with the fruit flashcards.

• Touch the children on the shoulder and encourage them to jump up. Encourage the class to say the fruit on the flashcards and mime eating the fruit.

• Repeat with different volunteers.

• Encourage a child to take out a fruit flashcard and show it to the rest of the class. Encourage the children to name the fruit and mime eating it.

3 Play Captain Jack’s listening game! Optional activity

• Get Captain Jack to say Listen to me! Do this! Eat an apple! Repeat with all the fruit and encourage the children to repeat the word and mime eating the fruit.

4 Sing The story song. (CD 2 track 33)• Before singing The story song you may wish to revisit the story as outlined in Lesson 2 Activity 6.

• Play the CD. Encourage the children to mime eating the fruit and do the actions.

• Play the song again. Encourage the children to stand up, sing along and do the actions.

5 Play Captain Jack’s phonics! (CD 2 tracks 34 & 35)• Show the children the mummy and melon flashcards. Encourage them to name the flashcards. Flash the flashcards at the children, and ask them to name them. Speed the process up as the children get more confident. Repeat the words after the children, exaggerating the /m/.

• Stick the flashcards on opposite sides of the board. Play Mummy and melon! Children dance to the music. Pause the CD when either word is spoken. Children point to the relevant flashcard.

3 Play Who likes pears?• Show the fruit flashcards and encourage the children to name them several times. Choose six volunteers using The hands up chant (see Introduction page 21). Get them to stand at the front of the class with their backs to the class.

• Encourage individual children to guess who has which flashcard and to say (Jessica) likes pears. If they guess correctly, the child holding the pear flashcard jumps round, shows the flashcard and mimes eating the fruit.

• Encourage all the class to repeat Pear! and mime eating a pear.

2 Play What is Captain Jack thinking?• Put the fruit flashcards on the board. Encourage the children to name them. Tell the children that Captain Jack is hungry and he’s thinking of a fruit. Encourage the children to guess which fruit he’s thinking of. When the fruit is guessed correctly, encourage all the class to repeat and mime eating the fruit. Give the child who guesses correctly the flashcard to hold.

• Encourage the child to mime eating the fruit. Get Captain Jack to say What is it? Encourage the rest of the class to say Apple! Ask the child to show the flashcard to confirm the answer. Repeat with all the flashcards.

2 Play A pear, please!• Stick the fruit flashcards on the board. Encourage the children to name them several times. Get Captain Jack to say What fruit do you want to eat? Encourage the class to say A pear, please! Give a child the pear flashcard and encourage the class to say Thank you!

• Repeat with all the flashcards.

3 Play Favourite fruit. • Stick the fruit flashcards around the room. Ask the children What’s your favourite fruit? Encourage them to stand next to the flashcard which illustrates their favourite fruit.

• Go to each group and count the children in the group. Encourage the rest of the class to help you. If there are more than six children in a group, count the children in multiples of six so that the children can join in with the counting.

• Ask the children to close their eyes and remove a flashcard. Say What’s missing? Encourage the children to say (Pear!). If the children answer correctly say What colour is the pear? (Green!). Show the flashcard and say Well done! It’s a green pear!• Put the pear flashcard back on the board and repeat the game removing a different flashcard.

5 Play Hide the treasure!• Encourage six volunteers to come to the front of the class using The hands up chant (see Introduction page 21). Say Close your eyes! Hide the seed, plant, melon and eating flashcards around the class. Encourage the volunteers to hold hands with a partner and find the treasure. Get Captain Jack to say Pirates! Look for my treasure!• Encourage the children to find the treasure before you count to six. Count slowly with the rest of the class from 1 to 6. Encourage them to count on their fingers.

• When the children have found the four flashcards encourage them to stand in the correct order. Get all the class to say seed, plant, melon and eating.

• Play with different volunteers.

6 Say The transition chant. (CD 1 track 13) • Put on the puppet. Put your finger to your lips and say Shh! Be quiet! Say the chant and do the actions while Captain Jack leads the children to their tables in small groups. Encourage the children to join in. (See Hello, Captain Jack! Circle time

1 Sing the Hello song 3. (CD 2 track 26) • Organise the children in a circle. Take the puppet from the treasure chest. Get Captain Jack to wave and say Hello, pirates! Encourage the children to say Hello, Captain Jack! Play the karaoke version. Sing the song and do the actions. Encourage the children to join in. (See Unit 5 Lesson 1 Activity 1 for the audio script.)

2 Play Everybody do this!• Show the fruit flashcards and encourage the children to name them. Repeat with colours and numbers.

• Get Captain Jack to say Stand up, pirates! Then flash the flashcards quickly with the help of Captain Jack and encourage the children to say the word. From time to time get Captain Jack to give an instruction. Say Pirates (run)! Encourage the children to run until Captain Jack says Stop! Repeat with all the flashcards and different instructions (jump, hop, shake, tickle, look with your telescope, fly).• Put any flashcards that the children have difficulty remembering on the board and revise the words at the end of the game.

3 Play What’s in my treasure chest?• Get Captain Jack to say Pirates! Do you want to see my treasure? Encourage the children to say Yes!

• Take a flashcard out of the treasure chest and make sure the children can’t see what’s on it. Encourage the children to guess the flashcard. Give the flashcard to the child who guesses correctly. Encourage the children to guess clean, dirty, hands, water, soap, towel. Prompt the children if necessary with mimes.

• Get Captain Jack to congratulate them for guessing so well and say Well done, pirate friends!• Encourage the children with the flashcards to stand up. Encourage them to stand in a row in order. Encourage the rest of the children to get them in order by saying dirty, hands, water, soap, towel, clean and encourage the volunteers to stand in that order.

4 Play Musical statues! (CD 1 track 16)• Get Captain Jack to say Pirates! Do you want to play? Encourage the children to say Yes! Play the pirate music and encourage the children to dance on the spot or around the class. Stop the music and say Seed! Encourage the children to mime planting a seed and then freeze in the position. Repeat with Plant! (mime watering a plant), Melon! (move hands in a large circle) and Eat the melon! (mime eating a melon).

5 Play Dirty and clean.• Hide a flashcard from the unit around the classroom. Choose two volunteers using The hands up chant (see Introduction page 21) to find the flashcard. Ask the two children to close their eyes as you hide the flashcard.

• Encourage the rest of the class to guide the two children. If the two children are close to the flashcard, encourage the class to say Clean! If the

get Captain Jack to say the following rhyme as the children look for the treasure: Where is the treasure? Look in the story! Can you see? Find the treasure 1, 2, 3!• When the children spot the hidden treasure encourage a volunteer to point to it in the Flip over Book. (The treasure is hidden in frame 1.) Say Treasure! Encourage the children to repeat. Say What colour is the treasure? Encourage the children to say Brown!

• Hold up the sticker page and say Show me the treasure! Encourage the children to peel off the treasure sticker, hold it up in the air and then put it in place. Encourage Captain Jack to say Well done, pirates!

10 Sing Bye-bye song 3. (CD 2 track 31)Put on the puppet. Play the karaoke version. Sing the song and do the actions. Encourage the children to join in. (See Unit 5 Lesson 1 Activity 10 for the audio script.)

1 Say The well done chant. (CD 1 track 32)• Put on the puppet. Get Captain Jack to congratulate his pirates on finishing the treasure hunt. Say Well done, pirates! 2 Play The flashcard dance. (CD 1 track 16)• Stick the fruit flashcards on different walls of the classroom. Divide the children into two groups: pirates and captains. Play the pirate music. Encourage the children to dance on the spot or around the class. Stop the music. Say Pirates! Sit down! Encourage the pirates to sit on the floor. Say Captains! Eat an apple! Encourage the captains to go to the apple flashcard and mime eating an apple.

• Play the CD again and alternate between pirates and captains and different fruits.

• You may need to use The calm down chant if children become too excited. (See Introduction page 21.)

• Point to the treasure chest. Say Look! It’s Captain Jack’s treasure chest!• Explain to the children that they are now at the end of the journey on the treasure hunt. Point to the cherry and Say What’s this? Encourage the class to say Cherry! Repeat with the rest of the fruit.

• Hold up the stickers and say Show me a cherry! Encourage the children to peel off the cherry sticker and hold it up in the air.
