Unit 4: Transition – Preparation for Post-16 (C1, C2, C3, C4)

What is Recruitment?Recruitment is the employment of new workers.

Newspaper e.g. local and regional newspapersJob centre Department for Employment and Learning

Unit 4: Transition – Preparation for Post-16 (C1, C2, C3, C4)

What is Selection? This is the process whereby the employer chooses the new employee from the list of applicants who have applied for the position.

METHODS OF SELECTIONApplication form A form which applicants complete, making it easy for

applicants to be comparedCurriculum VItae A list of all the applicants’ qualifi cations, experience

and achievementsInterviews Employers meet applicants and ask questions to judge

how suitable they would be in that particular jobTesting e.g. for an Offi ce Clerk position, the applicant may be

asked to perform a typing speed testPresentation Where the applicant may be given an area to discuss for

a set period of time

Responsibilities of the employers and employees in the selection process:

HONESTY e.g. the employer must present accurate and clear information in the job advertisement; the employee must provide honest information with regard to qualifi cations and experience

OBJECTIVITY the employer has a responsibility to fi nd the best person regardless of any other consideration e.g. religion

FAIRNESS the same conditions must be applied to each applicant – e.g. the same time allocated, the same questions asked

CONFIDENTIALITY both employee and employer must treat information learned about each other as strictly confi dential.

UNITS OF WORK FOR PUPILS WITH MODERATE LEARNING DIFFICULTIES (KS 4)

Unit 4: Transition – Preparation for Post-16 (C1, C2, C3, C4)

Teacher explains the three main issues to be addressed: • What you do • What you say • How you look.

1 Circle of Truth Pupils sit in a circle, teacher asks them to: Move if you - have blue eyes - are 1st born - are wearing black shoes - have brushed your teeth - are wearing earrings - like pizza …. etc Discuss – The interviewer can see the colour of

your hair or shoes and that you look neat and tidy. Can they tell, just by looking at you that you are hard working or if you are an honest person? You need to tell the interviewer a bit about yourself.

2 Qualities Activity Sheet 4(f) Qualities Cards What are employers looking for in their workers?

Pupils sit in a circle. Place the ‘Qualities’ face down in the centre. Pupils select one and discuss. Consider how they can prove to an employer they are honest, helpful etc. (they need evidence or examples).

3 What you do Activity Sheet 4(g) What You Do Has Value ... Everything you do has value. Everything you do

says something about the kind of person you are. Display the following headings – pupils make a list. (whole class or group activity).

What you do in school

What you do in your spare time

Pupils try to work out what proof they have to back up what they are going to say about themselves.

4 What you say Pupils complete Activity Sheet 4(h) Tell Me

Something About Yourself - Honest..............tell the truth - Helpful .............helping others/helping at home - Neat and tidy ....school uniform/tidy room - On time ............always ready for school on time - Hardworking ....exams, general school work.

5 How you look You never get a second chance to make a fi rst

impression.

Activity Sheet 4(i) How You look Look at the pictures and discuss: - • Who are they? • Where are they going? • Where do they work? • What job do they do? • Is their dress code suitable for the work they do?

Going for interview how should you look? Discuss: • Neat and tidy • Clothes • Hair, nails, shoes etc.

6 Interview Do’s and Don’ts Activity Sheet 4(j) Interview Do’s and Don’ts Read the case studies. Pupils list the Do’s and Don’ts. Discuss: • Arrival time • Nerves – how to relax • Handshake • Eye contact • Voice • Body language.

7 Demo Interview Activity Sheet 4(k) Mock Interview Questions

Using role play the teacher acts out a bad then a good interview - discuss.

Pupils in turn, act out a good interview scenario (whole class or in pairs).

8 Mock Interviews Arrange for an employer to host the Mock

Interviews.

Pupils visit employers premises suitably dressed and prepared for their interview.

Employers complete Activity Sheet 4(l) Mock Interview Feedback.

Can you spot the Interview Do’s and Don’ts?List them below.

Brian has an interview today. He has slept in and is running late. He has lost the letter stating the time and place where he has to go. He can’t remember exactly who he has to report to and he hasn’t had time to fi nd his suit jacket. He is chewing gum as he didn’t get time to brush his teeth. He doesn’t think he will get the job.

Sara has an interview today. She has been carrying out research on the company and job all week. She has turned up for her interview 10 minutes early and is eager to impress. She even has a good idea of questions she would like to ask at the end of the interview. Sara is wearing her best suit and looks neat, tidy and professional.
