Listening: understanding the sequence of events

When information is given, it is important to recognize the order in which events happen. To do this, your should pay attention to sentences that introduce an action which affects people or objects. In this way, you will see how the events change and progress.

Listen to the lecture and order the pictures by writing the numbers 1 to 8 in the circles.

An agenda for a meeting is a list of the things that need to be discussed or decided at the meeting. Questions to be discussed or decided at meetings include what, when, where and how things are to be done, and who will be involved.Here are some useful phrases which are often used when making an agenda for a meeting.

What are the main things we should discuss at the meeting? What should we discuss first? What event shall we organize? How about a…/Let’s have a… What about the…? Are there any other important things? We must also talk about the… Now, let’s put these in a clear order. This is the first/second/next thing. When/where shall we have the meeting?

Below is the agenda for a meeting held by some high school students who are organizing a school science exhibition. Read it and answer the questions underneath.

1 Does the heading of the agenda tell us the time, date and place of the meeting?

2 What are they going to discuss and decide at the meeting?

3 What is the advantage of using initials for the name of the exhibition?

Read the agenda again and answer these questions.

Work in groups. Your group has been asked to organize an event to raise money for a charity. Use the example agenda above and the useful phrases on the previous page to help you. Work together with a group leader to do the following.

1 Decide on the kind of event you will organize (e.g., a sale or a concert), and the charity you will give money to (e.g., Friends of the Earth or the Red Cross).

2 Decide on the items to be discussed (e.g., the time and place of the event, contents, helpers, money, guests, how to let others know about the event).

3 Arrange these items in a clear order.4 Write an agenda. (Invent the date, time, and place of
