Objectives• Understand the fundamentals of
Web Architecture• Explain web jargon clearly

Before we get any further…1. The Internet ≠ the Web– The Internet is the network
connections– The Web is one use of the internet –
for loading web pages
2. You can’t understand the Web without understanding the Internet

How does the Internet work?Key Words:• Client• Server• Network• Connection• IP Address• Domain name
• Data• Packet• Router

So how does a website work?(this is a server)
When you want to see a webpage your computer sends a message over the internet asking for that page
The web server finds the page on its hard drive and sends it back as a new message
Meanwhile, lots of other users are asking for that page and many others too

Anatomy of a Domain Namewww.amazon.co.uk
www.birmingham.gov.uk
This means that it’s a site based in the UK
This tells you what kind of site it is
This is the domain name – usually the name of the organisation
This means that it’s a web server
Other TLDs (often country codes):.com .ie .es .br .org .nz .de .tv
Other types of servers:FTP mail pop3It can also be a subdomain – a special extra website

Getting a Domain Name• All computers on the internet get an
IP address but not a domain name – you have to pay for that!• You pay the “domain registrar” who
is allowed to sell domain names by the organisation that runs that TLD• Different costs based on popularity
of name and TLD

Who looks after the server?• First of all, it’s not really a special
computer other than the software it’s running• But most normal people don’t keep
them at home!• Why not?

Web Hosting• This is when you pay a company to look
after the web server that your website ‘lives on’• Research: find 3 different companies
that provide web hosting (UK based, please!)• Compare the services they offer• Store this information in a table – you’ll
need it later today for the assignment!

relatively small• We need to move fast to cover all of
this unit before Easter!• Keep to the schedule, don’t get behind
on this unit!• Most of the work should be completed

Assignment 1The purpose of this assignment is to: give students the opportunity to show a knowledge of the basic features of web architectureAssessing: P1
outline the web architecture and components which enable internet and web functionality
Image from: http://antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=188309&start=20
ScenarioYou work as a trainee for YellowZebra, a new Web Design company based in South Birmingham. They specialise in online marketing consultancy and in designing, implementing and hosting e-commerce websites for small to medium sized local businesses.Your manager has asked you to create some information to show prospective clients, presented as Powerpoint slideshows, leaflets and reports. You have also been asked to design and create a website to show your creativity and technical skills.

Tasks (There are 2 for P1!)Before a client website can ‘go live’ it will need both a domain name and to be hosted. Create a presentation to show new clients:• Explain the purpose of a hosting service and the
typical functions provided.• Look at three different website hosting companies
and identify the services each offers.• Using a domain diagram, explain the structure of a
domain name.• Explain the role of a domain name registrar and find
out the registrar of a chosen domain name.

Note (see the Scenario)Presentations should be ready to present and may include speaker notes and timed transitions.

Task 2In response to customer feedback after introduction meetings, it has been found that some key words or jargon sometimes need explaining. Add extra slides to the end of your presentation to explain the following terms:
• World Wide Web• HTML (HyperText
Markup Language)• Web Server• ISP (Internet Service
Provider)• Domain Name Server
(DNS)• Router• Proxy server• Mail server• Browser• Email software

Deadline (& Homework!)• I expect this to be handed in to me
before the beginning of my next lesson with you – next Thursday• Email your work to me – make sure
it’s finished and perfect so you don’t have to re-do and waste time that should be spent on other work!
