Unit 27 Task 3

Performer Improvement Targets

Page 2: Unit 27 task 3 target planning

Introduction

• This task builds on your Task 2 work.• You need to test your four identified

weaknesses. The testing process should use standardised or bespoke tests.

• From this testing your results will identify two priority areas for improvement.

• Your eight week training plan will focus on these two priority areas only.

Testing Excellence Trait – Weakness 1/4

Trait: Jackling

Test Name: Video analysis, success percentage

Standardised Test:

No Normative Data: No

If Not A Standardised Test Detail Method Here:

Video footage was collected of Caroline playing in three 7’s matches. The number of times Caroline attempts to compete for the ball in recorded, I would then judge whether each attempt was a success and then calculate the success percentage. A success would count as the complete turnover of he ball, or disruption to the ruck.

Test Result 1: 0% success rate Test Result 1 Rating: Poor

Test Result 2: Test Result 2 Rating:

Test Result 3: Test Result 3 Rating:

Best Result: Only attempted to jackle on four attempts throughout the matches with 0 successes. From viewing the footage I could tell that Caroline was unsure and not confident when it came to the ruck area. In conversation with Caroline, this was true.

Best Result Rating:

Poor

Testing Excellence Trait – Weakness 2/4

Trait: Recognising and capitalising on 2v1’s

Test Name: Video analysis, success rate

Standardised Test:

No Normative Data: No

If Not A Standardised Test Detail Method Here:

After collecting video footage of Caroline playing in 7’s rugby matches, the number of times that Caroline is involved in a 2v1 situation is recorded. I would then record whether the 2v1 was effectively capitalised on, focusing on Caroline as the player. This may also link in with another weakness of Caroline’s which is passing. The percentage success rate is the calculated.

Test Result 1: Clear 2v1 situation, 6 times with 4 successes. 66.7%

Test Result 1 Rating: Good

Test Result 2: Test Result 2 Rating:

Test Result 3: Test Result 3 Rating:

Best Result: 66.7%

Best Result Rating:

66.7% success rate. This is also due to lack of understanding, the situations where she was unsuccessful was mostly due to her pass.

Testing Excellence Trait – Weakness 3/4

Trait: Accurate passing

Test Name: Video analysis, Success rate

Standardised Test:

No Normative Data: No

If Not A Standardised Test Detail Method Here:

Video footage was collected of Caroline playing in three 7’s matches. I will record the number of times Caroline attempts to make a pass, after this has been recorded I will then judge whether the pass was a success or not. This will be recorded and then the percentage success rate will be calculated. A success is judged as the pass going to the receiver’s ‘target’ without being dropped. I would also analyse the height and speed of the pass, to see at what distance she would need to start training at.

Test Result 1: 20 passes were attempted with 10 successes throughout the three matches. 50% success rate.

Test Result 1 Rating: Poor

Test Result 2: Test Result 2 Rating:

Test Result 3: Test Result 3 Rating:

Best Result: 50%

Best Result Rating:

50% success rate. Caroline’s passing technique was not very good and because of this often ended with an inaccurate pass which the receiver could not catch.

Testing Excellence Trait – Weakness 4/4

Trait: Accurate decisions with ball in hand.

Test Name: Video analysis, success rate

Standardised Test:

No Normative Data: No

If Not A Standardised Test Detail Method Here:

Video footage of Caroline playing in 7’s matches is collected and analysed. Each time Caroline has ball in hand and has to make a decision effecting attacking play, this is recorded. Every time time her decision leads to a success ( a try or metres made) it is recorded and then a percentage success rate is calculated.

Test Result 1: 9 situations where her decision made a definite difference in attacking play with 6 successes. 66.6%

Test Result 1 Rating: Good

Test Result 2: Test Result 2 Rating:

Test Result 3: Test Result 3 Rating:

Best Result: 66.6%

Best Result Rating:

Managed to capitalise on a situation where she was faced with a 2v1. She is a talented kicker although needs educating in where to kick during a match, some attempts lead to turnover ball and meters made by the opposition.

Improvement Target 1 (P6)Priority Excellence Trait

Jackling

Baseline Test Result

0% success rate. Lack of confidence and unsure of what she is meant to be doing.

Specific Target By the end of the 8 week training programme, Caroline is aiming to increase her confidence in competing for the ball and be able to win the ball 65% of the time when fully committed to the ruck in a game of 7’s.

Measurable After 4 weeks and then at the end of the 8 week programme Caroline will be tested again via video analysis. The target can be measured by the jackle success rate (%) and also by my own view as I will witness how much she has improved and the confidence she has gained.

Agreed Upon Caroline has agreed upon this target as she believes it is achievable, this is because after committing to rugby fully this year she has already seen improvements.

Realistic The target is realistic, this is because Caroline is a committed athlete and will want to try and push herself to improve. Also, I will schedule gym sessions within the programme, this plus her normal gym routine will mean that she will gain strength which will also help to compete for the ball.

Time Based Baseline test (WB 12/01):Review (WB 09/02):Complete (WB 09/03):

Page 9: Unit 27 task 3 target planning

Improvement Target 1 – Justification (M3)

• Why is this target needed?• What will be the performance benefit to the

performer (e.g. team selection, injury prevention and representative honours)?

• What will be the performance benefit to the performers team(s) (e.g. unit, attack, defence and whole team benefits)?

Page 10: Unit 27 task 3 target planning

Student Justification 1

For Caroline, this target is needed because at the moment she has the ability to make a tackle which can be taken advantage of. However, looking at video footage, Caroline will hesitate in her decision to jackle the ball. This improvement target will benefit her performance as using the correct technique and also strengthening her core through the 8 week programme, will prevent injuries from occurring as this will also reduce the hesitation. Improving her jackling technique will also benefit the team as she will be able to turn her defence into an attacking advantage and opportunity that the team can utilise and score tries.

Improvement Target 2 (P6)Priority Excellence Trait

Accurate passing

Baseline Test Result

The accurate passing success rate was 50% which is not high enough when playing at performance level sport.

Specific Target At the end of the 8 week training programme (WB 09/03), Caroline is aiming to be able to confidently pass to anther attacking player at varying distances up to 10m.

Measurable At the end of the 8 week programme where Caroline will be tested again, she should be able to hit a 10m pass with an 80% success rate. Also, using my own knowledge and therefore judging criteria, the passes should be accurate and hit the criteria.

Agreed Upon Caroline has agreed upon this improvement target as she feels that she can already, almost hit the target of 10m, however, the accuracy is not present.

Realistic The improvement target is realistic, as with added upper body strength increased during training, the distance should not be a problem and she will be comfortable with her technique as the repeated movement should come naturally after the 8 week training programme.

Improvement Target 2 – Justification (M3)

• Why is this target needed?• What will be the performance benefit to the

performer (e.g. team selection, injury prevention and representative honours)?

• What will be the performance benefit to the performers team(s) (e.g. unit, attack, defence and whole team benefits)?

Page 13: Unit 27 task 3 target planning

Student Justification 2The target to improve Caroline's accurate passing is needed as it is an essential skill in the game of rugby. An accurate pass will help her to improve her other weakness ( capitalising on 2v1’s) as a fast and accurate pass will allow the attacking player to run onto the ball at pace without adjusting stride length, therefore the defender does not have time to drift and make the tackle. Caroline has all the natural talent to represent the South East at divisional level after only a year of playing competitive rugby. With the improvement in her passing she will have a greater all round performance and will start to stand out during matches in which she may be spotted by talent development officers. The benefit of improving Caroline’s accuracy in her passing will enable the team to have more attacking chances. This is because the attack will not come to an end once Caroline gets the ball on the wing as she will have enough confidence in herself, knowing that she will be able to pass the ball inside to a supporting player with accuracy so that the play does not slow down, and the team maintains the momentum needed to score a try.
