Huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins. There are multiple ideas for interaction during this time, such as simple games that children can play on the floor or within whatever arrangements you gather your kids. Leaders can ask “get-to-know-you” questions after welcoming kids into their groups.

What I Like About You

This is a game of encouragement. Everyone wants to know the positive things that people see or think about them. Give specific instructions that comments must always be positive. Play a game of toss around the circle. When the beanbag is tossed to a person, one person should say one thing they like about them. For instance: “I like your blue eyes,” “I like how you always smile,” or “I like that you are such a good friend.” Leader, be prepared to jump in if things stall out or if a new kid has joined that week. For instance: “I like that you came to visit us this week.”

Tell kids that God made them just the way they are. Kids are important to God.

Color “God Cared for Elijah” Coloring Sheets

• Tell preschoolers that today how God took care of Elijah.

• Distribute coloring supplies and coloring sheets to the preschoolers. Allow them to color on their pages while they wait for the session to begin.

• If the kids prefer to use blank paper, they can color on the back of the page.

Hi! Have you guys ever had a bad day? Today started out kind of rough for me. First, I couldn’t find the shirt or the shoes I wanted to wear. Then, when I was ready to leave home, my car was almost out of gas. Finally, I made it here, but I couldn’t find my keys to unlock the door! Whew! Sometimes we have tough days, don’t we? Today in our Bible story, we’ll find out about a very difficult day and how God was there even when things were bad. So, let’s get this show off to a GOOD start! Is everybody ready? PLACES! Maybe it was something fun that you got to do with your family or your friends. Have you thought of it? Good! Now I want you to tell the friend sitting next to you what happened. (allows a few minutes for kids to share with each other) Did you know that God cares about everything that happens to you? Today, we will hear a neat story about how God cared for someone in the Bible! We want you to know that (Share the Life Point with motions.) Game Instructions:

Depending on the size of your group, set up multiple relay lines. Provide a ziplock bag, croutons, and bowl for each team. Place the croutons in a bowl and place the bowl several feet away from the teams. Place an empty sandwich-sized ziplock at the front of each team’s line. Teams will line up at a start line to be “birds.” Each “bird” will race to the bowl, get a crouton, walk back, and place it in the ziplock bag. The winner is the team that fills its ziplock bag.

Today’s game is a bread relay. Each of you will race to the bowl, get one crouton, race back, and place the crouton in the ziplock bag. When it is your turn to play, you will flap your arms like birdwings as you walk to the bowl and back. (demonstrates flapping motion) The first team to fill their bag wins! Are you ready? Get set! Go!

Good job, everybody! That was a close race! I can’t wait to tell you our Bible story about some birds. But first, let’s pass the bags of croutons to our leaders and have a seat.

STORYTELLER

(Show Bible Story slide.) Hi, friends! Today we will hear another exciting Bible story about the prophet Elijah! Are you ready to hear this true story? (Allow kids to respond.) Good! Let’s sit very still and quiet and listen to God’s Word.

Elijah was a prophet. A prophet is someone who hears a message from God and then tells that message to the person who needs to hear it.

(Invite three kids to join you in front of the group. Tell them they will help you tell the Bible story today.)

Where Elijah lived, there was no rain was falling. The land became dry and very little food was growing. God told Elijah to go to a brook. Do you know what a brook is? (Allow kids to respond.) Yes! A brook is a small stream of water. God said, “You can drink water from the brook. The ravens will bring food to you.” (Ask one of the children to look in the bag and pull out the item that contains water. Place the water bottle on the floor or table.)

Elijah did what God said. Every morning and evening ravens brought him bread and meat. (Ask one of the children to look in the bag and pull out the item that is bread. Ask the final child to look in the bag and pull out the item that represents meat. Place the bread and meat next to the water bottle. Send the kids back to their seats.) What are ravens? (Allow kids to respond.) Ravens are big black birds. The ravens would bring bread and meat to Elijah in the day and at night. Elijah drank water from the little brook at Kerith. God was taking care of Elijah. God knew that Elijah needed safety, food, and water. Did God give that to Elijah? (Allow kids to respond.) Yes, He did!

After a while the little brook of water dried up so God said, “Go to Zarephath. A woman there will help you.” When Elijah arrived in the town, he saw a woman gathering sticks. “Please bring me water,” Elijah said. “Bring me bread, too.” (Ask one of the children to look in the bag and pull out the bag of twigs and sticks. Dump the sticks out of the bag onto the floor or table.)

The woman said, “I do not have any bread. I have a little flour and oil to make bread for me and my son. Then we will have no more food.” (Ask the second child to look in the bag and pull out the flour. Place it with the sticks. Ask the third child to look in the bag and pull out the oil. Place it with the other items. Send the children back to their seats.)

Elijah told the woman, (Open your Bible and read 1 Kings 17:14.) This is what the Lord God of Israel says, The flour jar will not become empty and the oil jug will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the surface of the land.

The woman baked a small loaf of bread for Elijah. Then she baked bread for her son and herself. She continued to make bread for many days. The flour and the oil did not run out, just as God said. God made sure that Elijah, the woman, and her son had what they needed every day. God was taking care of them. God loved Elijah. God loved the poor woman and her son.

God loves you, too! God knew that we needed a Savior to take away our sins. So, God gave us Jesus. Jesus is our Savior who takes away our sins. We need Jesus!

God, thank You for loving us. Thank You for giving us what we need every day. Thank You for giving us Jesus, our Savior. Amen.

This time is designed for churches that have a pick-up time from a large room as parents arrive. It’s a great time for follow-up conversations and questions from small group leaders about the session’s content. You also can use the missions emphasis (below).

• What did Elijah need while he was out in the wilderness? (food and water)

• How did God take care of Elijah? (God sent ravens to feed him, and provided water from a brook)

• What did the widow and her son need? Did God provide? (Food! Yes, God provided for them and Elijah.)

• How does God provide for you and for your family? (Answers will vary.)

MISS IONS EMPHASIS (OPTIONAL)

• Review the missions story, “Total Surrender.”

• Explain that Kevin and Laura Baggett want to tell about Jesus anywhere people will listen. Some people, like Guadalupe, did not feel comfortable going to a church, but she liked hearing about Jesus at the pizza restaurant.

• Talk about places, other than church, where kids could tell people about Jesus.

• Pray that kids will have courage to tell about Jesus wherever they go.

Missions Story: Total Surrender

Kevin and Laura Baggett and their children, Cylia and Lucas, are a missionary family serving in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Buenos Aires is a huge city. Almost 13 million people live there! Most people in Buenos Aires speak Spanish. The people there enjoy doing things outside, especially playing soccer.

Cylia loves spending time outside, too. She enjoys spending time with her family, playing games, watching movies, and going to the park. But, her favorite activity is visiting the local bakery where she can buy Argentine candies and a sweet treat called alfajores (ahl-fah-HOH-rehs).

Out of the millions of people who live in Buenos Aires, only a few are followers of Jesus. The Baggett family wants to change that. They are partnering with churches all over the city, and God is doing some amazing things.

One day a lady named Virginia invited Kevin to her neighborhood. Soon they started a Bible study in a pizza restaurant! Virginia asked many of her friends to come to the pizza restaurant to hear about Jesus. One friend who came to the Bible study was Guadalupe.

Guadalupe was not a Christian, and she was not interested in going to the churches in Buenos Aires. But, Guadalupe enjoyed coming to the pizza restaurant each week. She began to learn about the Bible. God changed Guadalupe. She now says that God is the most important thing in her life. She became a Christian and was recently baptized.

Please pray for the Baggett family as they share about Jesus with the people of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
