In this section you will:

q Look at some everyday number problems

q Have a go at working them out

This section is designed to let you have a go at some everyday numeracy problemsthat you might come across.

Work through the section to help you get an idea of what you already knowand which areas you feel you need more practice with.

You will probably surprise yourself and find that you know more than you think.

At the end of each topic worksheet you are asked whether you found it easy, hardor would like to do more. If you found the work hard or would like to domore, then a suggestion of which section to go to is given.

Remember these sheets are not tests, they are simply to give you an indicationof what you know already and where you would like to start working.

Percentages appear in a variety of places in everyday life

For example:

q as special offers with 20% off

q the rate of interest at the bank or on a loan. Manufacturers sometimesoffer 10% extra free to encourage you to buy their goods.

MEASURING AND THE METRIC SYSTEM

Measuring can be part of a wide range of activities that you may have to do atsome time. For example:

q before you can buy a new carpet, you need to measure the size of theroom

q you may have to check the size of a particular space before placing apiece of furniture in it

q when buying new clothes you need to know your measurements in orderto select the right size

q if you are doing some repairs around the house or garden, measurementsoften have to be taken.

RECIPES

What do you do when you want to try a new recipe from a cook book and

the quantities given are too much or not enough for the number of peopleyou are cooking for?

Activity 4

Have a look at this recipe for scones. The cook book states that these quantitieswill make 8 scones, enough for 4 people. However you need to bake at least 16 tofeed your guests. How would you work out the new quantities?

SCONES (MAKES 8 SCONES)

225g self raising flour

40g butter/marg

150 ml milk

11/2

tablespoons caster sugar

pinch of salt

Sift flour into bowl and rub in butter. Stir in salt and sugar and gradually mix inthe milk. Knead mixture into a soft dough.

Roll dough out on a floured board to 2cm thick. Cut out as many scones as you canwith a round pastry cutter.

Place scones on a greased baking sheet and cook for 12 - 15 minutes at 425F,220C, or Gas mark 7. Eat when fresh covered in butter and jam of your choice.

Write down the new quantities you will need to make 16 scones.

A day at the races can be great fun but do you know how the betting systemworks?

Musselburgh Race Course, near Edinburgh, holds race meetings every few months.A group of friends from the office have decided to treat themselves to a day out ata race meeting.

The line up for the first race and the odds on the horses are as follows:

Horse Odds

Gypsy Queen 5:1

Lightfoot 2:1

Blackstar 10:1

Fair Lady 4:1

Lucy Streak 9:1

What do racing odds mean?

Gypsy Queen has odds of 5 : 1. This means that, if she wins a race, for every 1 youbet you get 5 back, plus your original 1 stake.

The bookies (book keepers) work out the odds by estimating which horses aremost likely to win and thus get the most bets placed on that particular horse. Thefavourite always has the lowest odds, meaning that if it wins, less money will haveto be paid out. The horse least likely to win will have the highest odds and placinga bet on this horse could bring in a good return, but only if it wins.

ORDERING STATIONERY

If you work in an office someone will be responsible for looking after the stationery.

This usually means keeping an eye on the levels of stock and placing new orderswhenever supplies are low. How would you know when to place an order and howmuch should you order? Most people with this responsibility work out a system toensure stocks never fall below a certain amount and when this amount is reachedthey know it is time to re-order the necessary items.

Imagine you are in charge of ordering stationery for the office. You are responsiblefor keeping a regular supply of the following items:

Often in everyday life you will need to calculate the costs of several things and

add them all together. You may need to work out the cost of a family holiday, thetotal amount it will cost to take a party of children out for the day or how mucheverything will cost for a birthday party for a certain number of people.

Your local playschool has asked you to organise their outing to the zoo. It is expectedthat 20 children and 4 adults will go on the outing.

You have the following information:

q Hiring a coach will cost 50.50.

TIME - DO I HAVE TIME

Time and how we use it is important. In the morning we awake to the alarm clock

and collect the paper which has the day and date on it. If I have to arrange ameeting or an appointment, I have to check my diary to make sure I have nothingelse on at that time. I have to estimate how much time I have for a task at home orat work and when to go to catch the bus to get me somewhere on time. Trains,buses, ferries and aeroplanes have strict schedules as do schools, TV and radioprogrammes, otherwise when would viewers know when to turn on for theirfavourite programmes?

Much of our lives are ruled by time. We organise our daily routines around timeand we need to know how much we can fit into any given time be it work, play orfamily.

The units we use to measure time are:

Minute = 60 seconds Hour = 60 minutes

Day = 24 hours Week = 7 days

Month = 30 days (roughly 4 weeks)

Year = 12 months (365 days/366 leap year - every 4 years)

TIME - Do I Have The Time

Start by filling in the times you know when you regularly do things such as take the

children to school, do a weekly shop, go to work or attend a class or do a sportsactivity. Then see what time is full and and you will then need to adjust your priorities.Perhaps you will need to see your friends less often or encourage a partner to helpwith the household chores to free up some more time to study. A lot will dependon how much you need and what you want to learn. Obviously the more time youhave to study the more you can achieve.
