How to do the reported speech

1. Use say / tell1.He/She said that ……..

2.He/she told me that ……

2. Take comma ( , ) and quotation mark ( “……”) out.

3. Change pronouns and possessive adjectives

4. Change the verb form to past form

Example: Direct Speech (Paula said), “I love you.”

Reported speech Paula said that she loved me.

Try to do

• 1) Present Simple Past Simple Tense Direct Speech : John said, "I like Thai Music.”

Reported Speech : _John said that he liked Thai Music_.

• 2) Present Continuous Past ContinuousDirect Speech : Lucy said, "I am not working in Hatyai.”

=>Reported Speech : Lucy said that she was not working in Hatyai.

• 3) will would Direct Speech : Jack and Tom said, "We will go to a pub.”

=>Reported Speech : : Jack and Tom said they would go to a pub.

• 4) can could Direct Speech : Jimmy said, "I can't speak Thai.”

=> Reported Speech : Jimmy said that he couldn’t speak Thai.

• 5) is/am/are going to + v.inf was/were going to + v.inf

Direct Speech : Alex said, "I am going to meet a friend."

=> Reported Speech : Alex said that he was going to meet a friend."

Exercise: Change the direct speech into reported speech

• Peter said, “I don’t see my aunt very often.”

• Alice told me, “I can cook Japanese food.”

• Maureen said, “My boy is studying five days a week.”

• Robert told me, “Your children can’t do my test.”
