Unit 11: PlantsTransportation

Transportation in PLANTSPlants need highways too

What?Like humans, plants need a system to transport materials too. We call this the VASCULAR system

Plant vascular system

Human vascular system

Gas Exchange

STOMA let waste O2 out & good CO2 in.

(O2 is a waste product of PHOTOSYNTHESIS remember???)

Phloem Phloem is TISSUE that moves glucose from the leaves (where it’s made) to the rest of the plant to use for ENERGY!

XYLEM Moves water & minerals up from roots to leaves. It is ONE WAY movement. Like sucking up water through a straw.

Roots job = Roots absorb NUTRIENTS & WATER from the soil. They also anchor the plant to Earth so it doesn’t get blown away.

This is why when you water a plant you

water the soil it is in. You also put fertilizer in the dirt so that the roots can suck up all the yummy goodness.

Leaves job = Leaves absorb sunlight to perform PHOTOSYNTHESIS. They also are the “nose” of the plant, exchanging O2 for CO2.

This is why plants need sunlight and will turn their leaves towards any source of light

that is closest.

Roots & Shoots:AKA: Vascular system or transportation system. Made from XYLEM & PHLOEM.

You need to remember that this is called the vascular system. It is used to transport water, nutrients,

glucose, & hormones throughout the same

way you veins & arteries do
