Background

• Science fiction novella set in a future version of the United States

• Published in 1953, a time of great prosperity for a large group of Americans

• WWII had brought the country out of the depression.

• Manufacturing and production increased.

• Two things produced that changed the face of America- the automobile and television

Influence of Television• As more people entered the middle class, they

were able to afford televisions• Before WWII, only 7,000-8,000 TV sets had been

made.• Production halted during the war and resumed in

August 1945.• In 1946, only .5% of U.S. house holds had a TV• By 1954 55% of Americans had TV• By 1962 TVs could be found in 90% of U.S.

households.

• Men worked during the day and women stayed at home and were a captive audience for the TV programs broadcast during the day.

• Children were also a desirable audience.

Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is a type of DYSTOPIC novel. That means it is about a future that is bleak, dark and dreary.

The novel focuses on two central themes:

1.CENSORSHIP

2.IGNORANCE OF KNOWLEDGE

Ray BradburyA noted science fiction author, became concerned about the dangers he felt television and automobiles presented to a stable society. Fahrenheit 451 is the book that came out of Bradbury’s vision of the future.

It is the 24th century. Books are considered dangerous and illegal. Nobody is allowed to own them. Most people are happy being plugged into their technology, where they do not have to think too hard. All books that are found are burned.
