Taking Care Online—for Yourself and Others

Read the passage with these questions in mind.22

Reading and Writing

1. What’s identity according to the author?2. How do you keep safe online?

Who are you? Friends may see you as silly or serious, shy or talkative. Maybe teachers see you as a creative student or good athlete. We’re talking about identity—the way others see you and how you view yourself. Your identity can affect your decisions, what you do and don’t do. Who are you online? Instant messaging and chatrooms let you choose your own screen name. Wanting to be known as “King of Ketchup” means you love ketchup? It’s up to you, but think: how much should you share about your real self online? With social networking sites like Facebook and My Space increasingly popular, you can create your online identity through personal web-pages. Users chat, share photos and tell people as much or as little about themselves as they like. Some even report what they had for lunch! So how do you stay safe, avoid problems and enjoy your online identity? Some tips:

● It’s tempting to use a screen name as a mask. But don’t be mean or embarrass others, i.e., be a good online world citizen.

● Be choosy about your online friends, who are not the same as real-world friends. Never agree to meet online friends in person or give out personal details.

● Limit what you share. It’s best to think first and type second when sharing stuff about yourself. Remember, anything you post on websites can stay online forever, even after deleting. It’s easy for anyone to copy, save and forward information online.

The identity is the way others see you and how you view yourself.

To use a screen name as a mask, limit what I share and be choosy about online friends.

Decide true (T) or false (F) according to the passage.33
