Unit 1 - Lesson 6
HumanEnvironment Interaction in the Eastern Hemisphere
Content Expectations
7 ndash G131 Use the fundamental themes of geography (location place human environment interaction
movement region) to describe regions or places on earth See also 6 ndash G131
7 ndash G431 Identify places in the Eastern Hemisphere that have been modified to be suitable for settlement
by describing the modifications that were necessary (eg Nile River irrigation reclamation of land along
the North Sea planting trees in areas that have become desertified in Africa)
7 ndash G521 Describe the effects that a change in the physical environment could have on human activities
and the choices people would have to make in adjusting to the change (eg drought in Africa pollution
from volcanic eruptions in Indonesia earthquakes in Turkey and flooding in Bangladesh)

Learning Targets 1 I can compare how humanenvironment interaction shows
us the ways in which people use and interact with the Earth
2 I can describe how people can adapt to the environment by changing their behavior because of certain natural conditions

bull This lesson begins with a quick review of what you have
already learned about the physical and human characteristics of the Eastern Hemisphere
Explain human and physical characteristics in SS Notebook Pick people to answer with name cards Afterward Thumbs upsidedown for remembering bull Remember that as people interact with the environment
they make adaptations in their behavior and modify their surroundings
bull This is called humanenvironment interaction and is one of the five themes of geography
bull We will continue to review the five themes linking them together
bull This is one way to organize geographic knowledge
