Elements of Fiction
• Fiction is literature with imaginary people, events, or places.

Cinderella
• Characters: Cinderella,stepmother,fairy godmother
• Plot: a young girl living in a wicked step family, her magical transformation that enables her to dance with a prince, and then her losing and then reclaiming a glass slipper
• Setting: timeless fairy tale land of castles and princes
• Narrator: a storyteller speaking from the 3rd person point of view
• Theme: kindness & goodness triumphs over meanness & evil****One element might stand out more than the others. For ex. Plot-
mystery; _______________-Western; theme- folk tales. *******
Types of fiction
• Fiction is classified into a specific type depending on its length.
• Novels usually have subplots, usually the longest. EX. The plot of a young man coming from China in search of his father. There might be a subplot involving his attempt to get his article about his father published in an American newspaper.
• Novellas have a word count of 10,000-70,000 words. (Charles Dickens story, A Christmas Carol)
• Short Stories are meant to be read in one sitting. (Little House on the Praire or Snow White)
Elements of Nonfiction
• Nonfiction only deals with real or true events.• The prefix NON means not. What does
nonfiction mean?
• Types of Nonfiction:• Biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, and
sometimes journal tell stories and are usually written in narrative form.

• Nonfiction writing is often developed to meet a purpose, or goal, such as to explain, or to persuade. Letters and essays and articles are used to persuade.
