LETTER FROM CHRISTINERobert Louis Stevenson reminds us that “to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive.” Here at Unison, we believe that the Arts are a glorious adventure. Whether it is re-visiting established classics or facing the terra incognita of new work or emerging artists, we can count on the journey to be exciting. And fortunately, we are blessed with a curious and courageous audience that travels alongside us, season after season, to see where we’ll go.

This spring we will push our artistic boundaries with new programs, new voices, new ways of telling familiar stories, and new artistic destinations. We will tour savvy music and smart conversations in our Second Sunday Salons; we will move to the beat of the music in our Fifth Friday Dance Meet Ups; we will revisit

old friends like Christine Lavin; make new friends like the hilarious Maestrosities; we will take the entire family along in our Family Fun series; and venture on exotic voyages with Pirates, Clowns and Flamenco Dancers. We can’t wait to get started. Won’t you join us?

This 2013 spring season is filled with adventure, bold challenges and a core of imagination intended to transcend our increasingly flat world. We dedicate our Spring ’13 Season to you, our members, audience and fellow travelers.

Our journey is our destination. All aboard!

Warmly,

Christine CrawfisExecutive Director

BRINGING YOU SAvvY MUSIC ANd SMART CONvERSATIONSBRAND NEW

Back stage conversation with Frederic Hand, Grammy-nominated composer, Emmy-winning television and film composer and recording artist and the Metropolitan Opera’s guitarist and lutenist.

Second Sunday Salons are reminiscent of the old-world salons of Europe, where the cultural cognoscenti would gather to experience and discuss the works of the leading artists of the day. Unison’s intimate setting will welcome regional musicians, dancers, thespians, authors and performance artists of renown from the Hudson Valley and beyond, representing the full spectrum of style and genre.

Back stage conversation with Normand Beauregard, stage, film and video fight choreographer. Normand Beauregard is resident fight master for The Gamm Theatre. Normand will also conduct a Master Class on April 13th. See page 12 for more details.

Violinist Helena Baillie is a prizewinner in international competitions and her performances are regularly broadcast on American Public Radio. She has collaborated with such eminent musicians as Pinchas Zukerman, Midori, the Tokyo Quartet and the Beaux Arts Trio.

“Equal parts folksinger and comedienne, Christine Lavin alternates songs with entertaining anecdotes about modern life.” She recently received a 2012 NYC Nightlife Award given annually to the best concert and cabaret performers.

Old-timey bluegrass music - complete with washboard! The region’s premier jug band, their set list includes selections from Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Jimmy Cliff, The Carter Family, Jesse Fuller, Grandpa Jones & Hank Williams.

Del Rey is a one woman musical whirlwind, and one of the few we know who plays a resonator guitar. Her “Women in American Music “ set tells the stories of the women pioneers in classic blues, to rural blues, to swing and rocking hillbillies.

Kim and Reggie Harris sing their way through African- American history, from mourning to celebration. Through classic spirituals, gospel and American folk songs, the Harrises pay homage to those who came before them with the utmost respect and reverence.

Back To The Garden 1969 recreates with skill and passion the magic, music and spirit of an era that peaked at the Woodstock Music & Arts Festival. Get out your tie-dyes and bell-bottoms and “Love the One You’re With!”

"Rishell is a master of country/blues styles and slide played on a National steel guitar. Raines, a rare female ace blues harmonica blower, is as strong a country harp accompanist as she is a harder-edged, Chicago-style player à la the great Little Walter…” -Billboard

The Maestrosities is a clown troupe that provides an entertaining goofball concert laced with sight gags and verbal quips. One woman and four men on accordion, clarinet, ukulele, tuba, trumpet, and New Paltz local Glen Heroy on the stainless steel spoons. Almanac’s John Burdick recommends. Great for ages 7 and up.

The McKrells’ blend of Celtic, American folk, and bluegrass is a group collaboration of red hot pickers who love Celtic Music. “Their unique mix of Irish Celtic Bluegrass is catching on like crazy. “ Winterhawk Bluegrass. With Kevin McKrell, Chris Leske, Doug Moody, and Rick Bedrosian.

Raw, powerful, visceral. Sweet, tender, quiet. Rowdy, funny, bawdy. It’s the energy that draws you forward in your seat. It’s the pulse that makes you engage. It’s the spark that makes you think. We don’t know what IT will be, but IT is always wonderful.

Becca and Howie had the perfect life–a great marriage, a beautiful house, a wonderful family. But when they are faced with a parent’s worst nightmare, the couple must answer tough questions about themselves, their relationship, and their place in the universe. YOUR GIFT MATTERSUnison was founded by artists and creative people. It continues to this day to be led by artists, with actors, designers and writers in key positions. Unison understands that focusing on the artist creates a bond that extends beyond the edge of the stage and out into the audience, and into the community beyond. Unison fosters creativity and community on an intimate scale: serving our region one person at a time.

Ticket revenue covers less than 60% of the operating costs associated with all our programming. Like all non-profit institutions, we rely on the generous contributions of loyal patrons and local businesses to bridge the gap. Donors are a critical part of Unison's artistic team, ensuring that we can continue to make the Mid-Hudson Valley a great place to raise children, and an even better place to raise adults.

Unison provides many options for supporting our programs through charitable gifts. Additionally, each giving and membership level provides the donor with certain benefits. Ask us for a complete listing of donor benefits at each giving level. There are many ways that you can support Unison Arts through your contributions. Please consider making a gift today at www.unisonarts.org.

Your contribution plays a critical role in the work we are producing now and the work we aspire to create in the future. Thank you for making it all possible.

YOUR GIFT MATTERS. TOGETHER WE CAN dO GREAT THINGS.
