Foreword This is the 12th annual Rochester
rodeo, which is not a Wild West show, but a real contest of cowboy sports with a total of $5,000 in cash awards.
The rodeo is under the personal d irection of Col. Jim Eskew, rancher from Garland, T exas, who has staged many of the greatest rodeos throughout the Southwest before coming to the East.
The outlaw horses and wild steers a re not trained but are like our gangsters with a mean streak in their blood that will never clear up.
The success of the rodeo depends not only on the
cowboys and cowgirls but on the stock. The outlaw horses and wild steers get more of a break than do the cowboys and cowgirls.
In this cont~st no cowboy or cowgirl is permitted to ride the same horae or steer twice during an engagement, and they never know what horae or steer the y will draw till the notice is posted on the boanl, and in this way there is no chance of "fixing" to get a
certain horae or steer. The cowboys and cowgirls come here at their
own expense and compete for valuable prizes.

The Origin ol Rodeo By Fog Horn Clancy
In the early days of the cattle industry, before the advent of barbed wire fence, cattle of one rancher would stray across the imaginary boundary which was supposed to separate the ranches, and mingle with the cattle of another rancher.
It was from the arguments and wagers made among the cowboys of the different ranches of a section while on roundup together that it became a custom to hold an impromptu riding and roping contest at the close of many roundups to settle the question as to which ranch was the home of the fastest roper or best bronc rider.
These contests were, while visited principally only by the contestants and the few ranchers in a section, the stepping stones to our great rodeos of today, for in order to settle an argument as to the best ropers and riders of a much l~rger section there was held at Pecos, Texas, July 4th, 1883, the first riding and roping contest where cash prizes were awarded to the winners. This was a big public rodeo, but spectators were not. charged an admission fee. The contest was held in the open flat near the court house and the prize's were $25.00 first and $15.00 second. Morgan Livingston, top hand of the NA ranch wen the steer roping, and Trav Windham, boss of the Lazy Y was second. There was no fenced in arena, and only two events, steer roping and bronc riding.
At a Fourth of July Celebration, at Prescott, Arizona, in 1888 the first rodeo or cowboy contest in which cash prizes were awarded to the winners and an admission charged the spectator, was held.
It was called a tournament, and in addition to races there were only two events, steer roping and bronc riding, both won by Jaun Levias.
North Platte, Nebraska, lays claim to staging a rodeo as a Fourth of July Celebration in 1883, with Col. Wm. F. Cody, as chairman of the committee, but all records that we have been able to dig up seem to point out that this affair was just a tryout of cowboys for the Buffalo Bill Wildwest Show, and we cannot find any records of any prizes having been awarded, and until other records are brought out to refute it Prescott, Arizona, will have the distinction of staging the first American (box office) rodeo.
In 1896 a big, well advertised rodeo was staged in Denver, Colorado, but was not a financial success, in fact there was so much work and expense to getting up a three or four day contest, that there were few of the early ones that were financially successfuL
In 1897, Wyoming's great annual rodeo "Cheyenne Frontier Days" was organized and while it had financial difficdlties in its first few years . it endured and is today the oldest rodeo in America, its slogan, "The Daddy of Them All" is correct.
Up until about 25 years ago, rodeos were staged only in open arenas and practically all of them in summer, the contestants usually worked on ranches between rodeos. Now the rodeo season extends throughout the year more than a hundred and fifty well advertised rodeos during a season and admissions running into the millions.

JIM ESKEW, JR. Junior Eskew, as he is commonly called,
might a lso be called America's Wonder Horse
man. Raised on a ranch in Texas, almost
before he learned to walk he was riding like
the wind over Texas ranch lands, having, like
most kids brought up in the environs of the
cattle industry, taken early to the saddle and
rope.
When he had reached the age of t en years,
he had become a good enough rider to take
part in his father's rodeos at county fai rs,
an~ with his fir st appearance before the pub
lic in exh ibitions there seems to have been
born within this Texas lad a des ire to excell,
to reach the top rung of the rodeo field, or
in other words, to be classed as a "Top Ha7d."
Junior Eskew is without question the
world's greatest Trick and Fancy Roper, he
is a marvelous trick rider and one of the
fin es t pickup men in the rodeo game. He can
ride bucking horses when it is necessary, can
bulldog steers when he wants to, is one of the
fastest calf ropers the west has ever produced.
Many of th e roping stunts performed by
young Eskew in the arena are of his own
origination, and don't fail to keep your eyes
on his horse "Blue," trained by Junior and
one of the fin es t horses in America.

CHAMPION TED ALLEN ·Ted Allen one of the feature attractions with the
Grotto Rod~o this year, has been champion horseshoe pitcher of the world eight consecutive years, 1933-41 and again in 1946, against all top-notchers in tou~naments. A career of 93o/o in all tournies and matches.
Allen was born on a farm near Natoma, Kansas, and learned to pitch horseshoes from his father who was an expert at the sport. While still in his teens he won the championship of Colorado for several years.
Shortly after being crowned champion of champions he decided to enter show business where he could make his skill profitable to himself. Since that time he has appeared in practically every large city in this country and Canada giving exhibitions of his wonderful skill. Each year he is a featured attraction of the Madison Square Garden Rodeo.
His skill with horseshoes is nothing short of uncanny and his routine in the rodeo arena never fails to hold the audience spellbound.
Steer Wrestling or Bulldogging and How It Originated In 1903 Bi11 Pickett, a Texas Negro cowboy near
Austin, originated the stunt of · bull-dogging, so called because after leaping from his horse and grabbing the steer by the horns he would twist the animal's neck until its nose and mouth were turned upward when he would sink his teeth in the animal's lip bulldog fashion then releasing the hold upon the horns would tumble over backward.
Th tenderness of the lip and the pain of the bite would cause the steer to topple to the ground.
Pickett performed the stunt at picnics, reunions and other gatherings, made a great reputation and
then joined the 101 Wildwest Show. At the Jamestown Exposition in 1907 he was injured and Lon Sealy of Nogales, Arizona, performed the stunt in Pickett's place and thus became the first white cowboy bulldogger.
A few years later many white cowboys had taken up the stunt, but being adverse to the lip biting process began throwing the steers by the application of wrestling holds upon the head and horns of the animals . It soon became a regular contest at rodeos and the new title of steer wrestling was applied.
FANCY ROPING AND TRICK RIDING
Fancy roping and trick riding are very interesting events of every big rodeo, but for nearly two decades have been presented as exhibitions and not contests as they were at most big rodeos previous to that time.
Neither fancy roping or trick riding comes under the head of necessary ranch work, but originated

CY COMPTON CORRAL Three years ago a small group of people organ
ized the Cy Compton Corral to promote interest in · rodeos and western horses.
The original officers were : Ed. Sweeting, Corral Foreman; Verna Frost, Trail Boss; Stewart Stote, Wagon Boss; and Jack Frost, Senior Line Rider.
The present officers are: Ed. Sweeting, Corral Foreman; Ruth Durbin, Trail Boss; Carl McDonald, Wagon Boss; Stewart Stote, Senior Line Rider; and Lola Hare, Don Zavaglia, John Van Zandvoord, Kay Stote and Jack Rice, Line Riders.
There have been regular monthly meetings with movies and games for members and friends. We have had many trail rides over the lovely trails
around Rochester. Some of our members have entered 'i\Testern Classes in many horse shows and in the local events of the Grotto Rodeo.
Our Relay Team was very successful last year, winning evry race in the Rodeo competition. We are hoping to duplicate that record this year.
Anyone interested in joining our Corral and taking part in our activities may contact our Trail Boss, Miss Ruth Durbin, at 79 Somerset Street, Rochester 11, N.Y.
The Cy Compton Corral, Irondequoit Spur Club and the El Charros will compete as they have in the past four years in a Three Club Relay Race.

Tbe Wby ol a Cowboy's Wearing Apparel The cowboy of the rangeland has a garb as
distinctive and practical as the uniform of a soldier. It was made for use and each article has a definite and practical need. The cowboy is one of the most . unique characters in the world, there has been more verse, paintings, stories, movies, songs and poems on him or in which he has played a leading role than on any other character. Furthermore his dress is so distinctive, so much his own, that a man wearing a broad-rimmed sombero, chaps and boots might be flashed upon the screen in most any part of the world and the audience would immediately murmur "cowboy."
For instance the high top boots are waterproof and keep the feet dry if it is necessa ry to wade in shallow water, or while walkin on rain soaked ground. The high heels of the cowboy boot have come in for much discussion and many have asked the why of them and why they slant toward the center of the boot. Their purpose is twofold, first the high heels are to keep the foot from slipping through the stirrup, also if a rider is thrown from a horse and his foot hangs in the stirrup most times the foot will come out of the boot and thus release the thrown rider and while this does not always happen before the rider has been severely trampled, it has saved many · a cowboy's life. Next the long narrow high heels dig into the ground and give the roper a good firm footing when he has roped, on foot.

The kerchief worn ordinarily around the neck, is used by the cowboy on the range as a kind of mask over their nostrils when riding in dust caused by driving herds. It also protects the neck from the heat of the sun.
The broad-brimmed hats are to shade the head and eyes in the hot sun, and the cause of the expression "ten gallon hat" was the fact that often times a cowboy would ride into a stream stirrup deep and, while his horse drank, he would lean over and fill or dip up a hatful of water and drink it.
Chaps were created for the protection of the cowboy's legs. When riding after cattle at either a fast or slow gallop through brush and timber, a cowboy's legs often-times were snagged on tree stumps, limbs, etc. These heavy leather chaps broke the for ce and saved him from jagging or cutting himself. They also prevented brush from tearing the pants and help ed protect and keep him warm in rainy or snowy weather. Sometimes on a big outfit a rider who wasn't sure of himself or hadn't r eached the top of the game would wet his chaps on the inside of each leg. This would help him with his grip and give him more confidence. Although the clothing worn by members of the cowboy trade was picturesque, it was distinctive. It was not worn for show nor did the style change from year to year just for convenience and comfort.

TRICK AND FANCY RIDING In this exhibition the cowboys and cowgirls, wi th
agile grace, lend charm and beauty in a symphon-y of riding rhyt hm, their gentle, though spirited and perfectly trained cowponies contrasting so strangely and strongly from the vicious broncs. No prizes or titles are at stake.
All must be harmony and understanding between rider and horse. T hrough long practice, the horse knows every move its rider makes, and the ride r knows to a split second what the horse will do. Without th is perfect harmony and unison disast er would befall at every turn .
The Rochester Rodeo only brings in the most expert trick and fancy riders. Last year this event proved to be one of the most popular on the program.

Corral-As a noun it means an enclosure built of wooden rails which are supported by posts set firmly in the ground. The rails are usually lashed to the posts with g reen rawhide, which contract when they dry and make th e entire structure as strong as though made of iron. As a verb, to drive into a corra l. The word is from the Spanish verb (corralar) meaning to drive into an enclosure.
Covered H is Dog-When the round-up captain has gathered all the cattle in a given region he is said to have "covered his dog."
Dally-To 'take a half-hitch around the saddle horn with a rope after a catch is made, the loose end being held in the roper 's hand so tha t he can let it slip in case of an emergency, or take it up shorter. Also called by the slang names of "daled," "vuelted," "dale-vuelted" and "dolly welted"-each derived from the Spanish phrase dar Ia vuelta, which means to take a turn or twist with a rope.
Ear Down-The act of distracting a horse 's att ention by holding its head down by the ears while the rider mounts; Sometimes the man doing the earing will catch th e tip of the ear that is above his hand with his t eeth. This will cause the horse to stand very still to avoid the pain.
Four F lusher-Slang for one who bluffs. It is a poker t erm, meaning to draw to fill a bobtail flush and to bet after failing to fill , hence bluffing; to make a pretense of competence when incompetent.
Hackamore--A halter; corrupted from the Spanish word jaquima (th e ] prouounced like h; the qu as k ; and the accent on the fir st syllable). It is usu-
ally an ordinary halter used as a rein stead of a leading rope.
Lariat-Originally a horse-hair or grass rope used in picketing animals. The term is often used in the southwest for a cowman's rope. The name comes from the Spanish Ia reata, the liter.al meaning of which may be expressed as " the tie back." It is also called a "reata," "r ita' 'or "lass rope."
Mecate--(Generally pronounced "mecarty") . A hair rope us ed as saddle reins with a hackamore, or as a tie or lead rope. Because a hair rope for this purpose has Ioong been tradtional there is now a tendency to call all hair ropes mecates.
Mustang-A wild horse, usually one which is not cross-bred. From the Spanish mesteno, which comes from mesta, meaning a group of horse raisers. The suffix eno means "belonging to" and so the horses that escaped from the early mestas and ran wild were called mestenos, or mustangs.
Op'ra House--The top rail of the corral fence when1 one can watch the riding of a bucking horse. It is also a time-honored conference place.
P iggin '-atring- A short rope used in hog-tying. Pinto - (From pintar, to paint) a piebald or
spotted horse. Also called a "paint." Set Down-Being fired off a job without having
a hors e to ride away. In the early days, if a man thus fir ed had no private horse, this manner of firing of ten ended in a shooting match. Most ranchers r ecognized the seriousness of "settin' a man afoot" and loaned him a company horse to ride to own.

WESTERN LINGO Shadow Rider--A cowboy who rides a long gazing
at his own shadow. Mirrors are sometimes scarce on the range aud some fellows must admire themselves even though only by watching their shadow. Cloudy days have no silver linings for them.
Shindig-Probably from the old word ·"shindy," meaning a rumpus, as "to kick up a shindy." The cowboy uses the word exclus ively as a dance t erm, and the old cowboy dance r eally was a romping, stomping affair, not, as one stated, " jes wigglin' your rump." A cowboy dance usually lasts all night. When it breaks up at daylight the ladies retire to "freshen up their spit curls and chalk their noses," and "sort the weaners that 's beginnin' to stir off the bed-ground," tha t is, pick up the chlidren parked in one big bed. The old bow-legs on th e dance floor pass the last bottle around, saving a big drink for the fiddler to get him to play a final tune. Then they throw a stag dance, "that's apt to be kinda rough and end up in a wrastlin' match."
Show-bucker--A horse that bucks hard, straight away, with nose between front legs. Though riot difficult to ride, he looks good from the grandstand in rodeos.
Skookum-An Indian t erm, meaning good, g reat. Throw Out-To stop a moving herd and move off
the trail. The expression is us ed as "throw out the cattle and build .camp;" Also, an animal cut from a herd.
Vaquero--The word comes from vaca (cow) with the Spanish suffix er-o and means "one engaged in cows." Used with reference to cowboys in the southwest, a long Mexican border and sections of California.
Wave 'Round-To wave a hat or other object in a semi-circle from left to right, which is a sign language of the plains, meaning that you are not wanted and to stay away.
Wrangler-A herder of the saddle horses. A corruption of the Mexican's caverango, meaning hostler. His job is considered the most menial in cow work and he doesn' t stand very high in a cow camp. Yet his job is a training school and many good cowboys have had their start as a wrangler. Between his herding tasks he is kept busy dragging wood and hustling water for the cook. He doesn't get much sleep and contends with many hardships, but his love of horses and his ambition to become a cowboy keep him on the job. By studying the characteristics of each horse, he knows which are ap t to be bunch quitters, which are fighters and wh ich are afraid of their own shadow. Although it ca n rare ly be said, the greates t praise that can be bestowed upon a wrangler is that " he never lost a horse." ·
Yaks-A nickname given by cowboys to cat tle that came from the Yaqui Indian country.
