Menu changes for DecemberSalad bar wasn’t listed at the top of the

December menu. We will be having salad bar as usual on Wednesdays and Thursdays except the

week of December 19th. Also, the menu for Thursday, December 22nd

will be Chicken Caesar Salad.

Holiday Shop at UESThe PTC is once again sponsoring a Holiday Shop this year for the students at UES. On Friday, 12/16 the Holiday Shop will be open for all at the Gingerbread Gala. Cash or checks made out to UES PTC will be accepted. The kids had so much fun shopping for their loved ones last year and it got them into the spirit of giving rather than receiving. Thanks for your support!

Holiday Raffle

The PTC Holiday Raffle will be continuing next week and ending on Thursday, December 22nd. Tickets are 25 cents or 5 for $1.00. Donations of small items to be raffled off would be greatly appreciated. Any donations can be dropped off If you would like to donate any items to the raffle, please drop them off with Allison in the office!

Gingerbread GalaThe Annual UES Gingerbread Gala will be on Friday 12/16 from 6-8 pm. There will be games, arts and crafts, derby racing, Plinko, choice raffle, prizes, and face painting. Home Depot will be there with building kits for the kids and new this year we have an electronic double shot basketball arcade game. We will have an assortment of hot food that will be sold for $2 per cup. Water, juice boxes, and baked goods will also be for sale. This year we will charge $1 per child for admission to help cover costs. We will need volunteers for baking, cooking, managing activities, setting up and breaking down the event. We also are looking for donations to be raffled in the choice auction at the gala.

COLD WEATHER ALERTPlease be sure your child comes to school prepared for outdoor recess. While there are occasional days students spend recess indoors, most days they are outside for a period of 15 minutes in the morning when they get off the bus and 25 minutes at lunchtime. If students wear shorts to school they must have pants to put on for recess. We recommend that all students have appropriate outerwear which includes coats, hats and gloves or mittens. Snow pants and boots are recommended as well. Students wearing snow pants and boots may be on the whole playground; students in boots without snow pants are restricted to the blacktop and playground equipment (at the discretion of the duty people); and students with no snow pants and boots are restricted to only the blacktop. All students are expected to go outside for recess. If you are in need of a coat, snow pants or boots for your child, please contact Allison in the school office @ 785-4330 and we should be able to help you out.

MORE ABOUT HEAD LICE………………

Last week we started learning more about head lice than any of us probably ever wanted to know. Today I want to focus on what part the school can play in “The Battle”.

*When a child complains of their head itching, or a teacher notes a child scratching their head frequently, the child will be sent to the office with a note requesting “a head check”. Checking is usually done by one of the school secretaries or health aides, in as private a location as possible.

*If head lice are found, siblings are then checked and parents contacted. Most parents choose to pick their children up to begin treatment immediately.

*A notice is sent home with other students in the classroom indicating that there has been a case of head lice. Parents are asked to check their children daily for the following week.

*Due to the fact that teachers need to make the most of instruction time and the lack of “other” school personnel, routine screening for head lice is not done in school. In addition, routine classroom or school head checks have not proven effective.

*The school can educate students on how head lice are spread and reinforce preventative measures such as not sharing combs, hats and other “head gear”.

*Classroom teachers can also request that students bring a plastic grocery bag to school to store jackets, hats and scarfs when not in use.

*When a child returns to school from being treated with head lice, they will be checked to note the success of the treatment as well as the removal of nits.

And finally, the school can provide education, instruction and support for parents as they deal with the identification and treatment of head lice. Please feel free to call whenever a question arises. Because I’m assigned to three schools within the district, it is most often easier to leave a message for me at 785-2277, Ext 224. I will return your call as soon as I possibly can. We’re “in this together” folks!
