UNION — The Union County High School football schedule for 2017 includes six non-region games and four region contests.

The 2017 season, which is the second season for the Jackets in Class 4A and the second under Head Coach Bradley Adams, began on the road as they trav-eled to Inman to take on the defending Class 3A state champion Chapman Pan-thers on Aug. 18.

Union defeated Chapman last year at home before the Panthers started a win-ning streak that eventually led to them defeating Dillon in the Class 3A cham-pionship game. The Panthers return the majority of their starters and should be especially strong on offense.

The Highway 18 rivalry will be

renewed in the Jackets second game of the season on Aug. 25. The Jackets will travel up to Gaffney to take on the Indians at the New Reservation. Last season, Gaffney defeated Union County 53-7 behind the play of their very young Quarterback Tyshun Sarratt.

The bad news for every team that plays Gaffney this year is that Sarratt returns at the helm for the Indians this year. He improved every week last year and so did the Indians who made it all the way to the third round of the playoffs before being eliminated. Gaffney should be a force in Class 5A this year.

The Jackets first home game will come in their third game of the season (Sept. 1) when they take on York at Union County Stadium. Union County defeated York last year 23-13 also in the third game of the season.

Following the matchup with York, the Jackets will be at home the following week taking on the Spartanburg Vikings.

The Vikings made the Upper State Championship last year, but have a lot of unanswered questions coming into this

Coach Cornbread observes practice from the sideline as the Union High School Yellow Jackets prepare for the 2017 season.

season, especially on offense where several players graduated including quarterback Wil-liam Yex.

The Viking defense will be very good, with the strength of their team probably being their linebacker core led by Connor Shugart.

The final two non-region games for Union County will be at Ridgeview on Sept. 15 and at home versus Boiling Springs on Sept. 22. Ridgeview beat Union County twice last year, once in the regular season and then again to end the Jackets season in the playoffs.

Boiling Springs is coming off the most suc-cessful season in school history, which saw the Bulldogs claim the region title and make their first ever appearance in the state title game, where they came up a bit short. The Bulldogs lost a lot to graduation including a good quarterback, most of the offensive line, and the majority of their defense.

Union County will start region play on Sept. 29 on the road at Eastside. Eastside hired a new head coach in the offseason.

Dan Morgan comes over from Blythewood to take over the Eastside program after the departure of Steve Wilson, who went 10-11 over the past two seasons at the school. Eastside was a pretty young team last year and should be improved.

The Jackets will then take on Blue Ridge at home before traveling to rival Greer for a game that could decide the region title. Greer always seems to find a great running back and are usually very talented at the skill position.

Union County will end the regular season at home on Oct. 27 against Travelers Rest, who went 2-8 last year and aren’t expected to do much better this year.

Tyler Shugart | Union Daily TimesUnion County High School Head Football Coach Bradley Adams addresses this year’s team of Yellow Jackets during a recent practice. Adams expressed confidence in this year’s team which he has described as a group of hard working young men. He said he feels the team is fundamentally sound at every position.

By Tyler ShugartFor The Union Times

Q: A lot of players graduated last year including your quarterback, a star wideout in Shi Smith, and several offensive and defensive line-men. How do you plan to fill those voids on the team?

A: I can tell you right now we lost a lot of talent last year, and we may not replace that with an abundance of talent, but what we do have is a hard working group of young men. These young men are going to give it all they have all the time. I really believe that his year we are a lot more fundamen-tally sound, at every position, than we were last year. We are hoping that being more fundamentally sound will help us to play better instead of just relying on pure athletic ability.

Q: One of the positions you will have to fill the year is at quarter-back. Have you found your quarter-back yet?

A: We think we have. It is still up in the air a little bit, but we are pretty good with Kesean Glover going into the start of the season. He is a young kid who is going to have a bright future but just like in any situation when you are young we know that he will make some mistakes along the way. We are hoping that these first six non-region games will give him the much-needed experience that will help him get ready for region play and hopefully the playoffs. There is really no way to prepare a quarterback other than just give him the experience and let him learn along the way, but as far as the future is concerned it is going to be very bright for this young man.

Q: How about the offensive line and the skill positions?

A: We feel pretty good about our offensive line. There are a couple of holes there that our coaches are work-ing extremely hard to get some of these young men to respond to what we are asking them to do to play at a very high level. As far as a wide receiv-

er I don’t feel like it’s a position we are struggling at. We have lost one starter for a little while, but we feel like we will be OK out wide.

Q: How do you feel about the defense?

A: We are fast, faster than we were last year. We are really preaching to them about all 11 players getting to the football, and not just standing around watching someone else make a play, That’s something that we felt like we didn’t do very good last year. We tried very hard in the offseason to make our kids faster and trim them down so they could get around better and we felt like we’ve done that. I go back to what I said earlier — we may not have a tal-ent like AJ Hunter up front, but we do feel like we have six or seven guys who can play up front that can play good fundamentally sound football. In the secondary we have a couple returning starters who offer some experience, but we will also be playing some new guys at the corner and safety.

Q: How do you feel about the spe-cial teams?

A: Our kicker is one of the strongest parts of our team. Blake Johnson has worked extremely hard during the offseason to get stronger. We feel very solid with Blake doing the kicking. Blake is not only a good kicker he’s an even better young man. He is definitely a leader and the kind of young man we are looking to build our program around here at Union County.

Q: Last year your motto was “One Blood.” What’s the motto this year?

A: Details, Accountability, and Work Ethic. Those are the things we feel we have to emphasize to get this program back to where this community expects it to be. We have to pay attention to the details, we have to be held account-able for our actions at all times, and we have to work hard. We are trying to teach our young men that without a strong work ethic, you can’t be suc-cessful in life. The reason we teach them these things is without them you won’t be successful in football, but you

also won’t be successful in live. At the end of the day football is a temporary thing, but life is forever and we want

our kids to be successful in life.

UNION — Year two of the Bradley Adams era at Union County High School kicked off on Friday, as the Yel-low Jackets opened the season on the road taking on the defending 3A state champion Chapman Panthers.

Year one of Coach Adam’s tenure as the Jackets head coach was by most accounts a successful one. The Yellow Jackets were able to win their region and had a 6-4 record for the regular season. Union County went 2-4 in non-region contests last year with wins over Chapman and York.

Chapman ended up losing only one more game all year en route to claim-ing the school’s first ever state title. The Jackets went undefeated in Region II 4A, winning all four games by double digits, including an impressive 42-28 win over the rival Greer Yellow Jackets in the Jacket Bowl.

The Jackets then went on to the

Class 4A playoffs where they defeated Aiken in the first round 43-20. The Jackets were defeated in the second round of the playoffs by the Ridgeview Blazers 24-20.

The Jacket offense was explosive at times thanks in part to the big play capabilities of wide receiver Shi Smith. Smith ended up being a Shrine Bowl selection, the Jackets first since the 2012 season. Smith is now a wide receiver at The University of South Carolina where he is expected to make an immediate impact on the field for the Gamecocks.

Coming into the 2017 season the Jackets will have to find a player who can make the kind of plays that Smith made down the field. The Jackets will also be looking for a new quarterback to replace graduated Brandon Thomp-son. The Jackets will also have some questions along the offensive and defensive lines.

As usual, the non-region portion the Union County’s schedule is brutal. However, if they can make it to the region portion of the schedule without sustaining any major injuries, they will have a chance to repeat as region champions.

WHITMIRE — The Whitmire High School Wolverines are back and ready for a new season of varsity football.

This season fans will see a few new players on the field, a few of which will be starters.

This year’s new players include Logan Ricks (tight end), Caleb Bowers (defen-sive end/tight end), Wyatt Crase (tight end), Chandler Crumley (linebacker/full back), Nate Stanley (defensive back/wingback), Chansel Minick (tight end), Joey Rosenfeld (defensive line/offen-sive line), Jihad Fisher (defensive line/offensive line), and Gage Gedeist-Farmer (offensive line/defensive line)

Crumley, Stanley, and Gedeist-Farmer are all starters this year.

Head Coach Charlie Jenkins said new-comer Tymere White is the strongest guy on the team. Crumley is big, strong and athletic, Stanley is smart, strong and quick and Gedeist-Farmer is big, strong and smart.

“They seem to be acclimating well to varsity football. Since its my fourth sea-son these guys ran our offense as middle schoolers seventh, eighth and ninth grade. So the adjustments come with the speed and size of the opponents and the intensity of a varsity game,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins said key returning players this season include defensive back JR Epps, who is a returning starter at cornerback

and Quentin Aughtry, a defensive back/wingback that Jenkins said is the best defensive player. He also said Kyle Hunt, who slots in at defensive back/wingback, will have a bigger role this year.

Other key players include:Trey Lyles, a defensive back/wingback

who has an injured ankle, but will be back soon

Defensive back Lomas Davis will be a four year letterman

Alan Mikel Stanley, a defensive end/tight end, is a two way starter

Garrett Jenkins,a defensive end/tight end who is a new starter

Jaylen Brown at defensive back/wing-back

Bailey Holloman at quarterback/defen-sive back

Matthew Prather, a returning line-backer/fullback, was a leading tackler as a freshman

Linebacker Alex Little will be four year letterman

Donte Fisher, offensive line/defensive line, is one of the Wolverines big guys

Jordan Stone, offensive line/defensive line, will be a contender to be All Region this year

CJ Saverance, at defensive end/offen-sive line, is strong and smart

Andrew Felker, offensive line/defensive line, is the returning center.

“Bailey Holloman (quarterback) returns for his second year under center. We threw a lot at him last year and he made a lot of progress. I look forward to

him having a great senior year,” Jenkins said. “Bailey earned his spot with his ath-leticism and a strong arm.”

This season will also see some changes in the returning players positions. CJ Saverance moves from tight end to offen-sive tackle.

“CJ might have the best hands on the team but we do not throw it too much and we need his size at tackle. He is a team first guy, I am still going to try and throw him a few passes if we get a chance,” Jenkins said.

This season the Wolverines will also see a new athletic trainer on the field.

Raegan Smith, a graduate of Indiana University and a graduate student at the University of South Carolina, replaces Beverly Wood who took an assistant principal position at Mid-Carolina Mid-dle School.

The Wolverines will play the same teams as last year, the only change will be that every home game last year will be an away game this year and vice versa.

“We have a tough schedule. Wagener-Salley returns just about everybody from last year’s team and they beat us 36-0 last year. Ridge Spring-Monetta is a con-stant in Class A. Lewisville played for the Upper State Championship last year. Bethune-Bowman returns everybody and they went 7-3 last year,” Jenkins said. “In our region we have all been rivals for a long time. Calhoun Falls, Ware

Shoals, Dixie, and the reigning champi-ons McCormick. McCormick has Duke commit Mateo Durant back for one more season.”

This season, Jenkins said they will need to keep it simple and add a little bit as they go through the season. He said that their biggest challenge will be depth this season.

“More players will have to play both ways … offense and defense. Our strength will be secondary play on defense. We also return our leading tack-ler player-sophomore Linebacker Mat-thew Prather. Having our quarterback returning is very big for us,” he said.

This season the Wolverines will con-tinue the Double Wing Offense, which is an offense that features two tight ends, two wingbacks, one fullback and a quar-terback in the backfield. This offense uti-lizes zero line splits. As for defense, they will start out in a 3-5-3.

“Coach Campbell will adjust our strat-egy and personnel according to who we are playing,” Jenkins said.

This season Jenkins said he is looking forward to the Week Zero game against Wagener-Salley.

“It’s not for a trophy and its a non-region game, but that game has stuck with me for a year. They thumped us pretty good last year. It was a gut check and last year we did not respond well. I want to see if we have improved,” he said.
