    UNIK - Community Service Toolkit

    PROFILE OF THE COMMUNITY

The Thomasian brand of service enters a new level. Your understanding of the issues andrealities happening in our society is very important. The activities in this toolkit will help you to

have a deep understanding of those realities. This toolkit will guide you with the process as you

conduct different activities in serving the community. You will be asked to work in groups and

everyone is required to participatein the different activities. As Mahatma Gandhi puts it, you

must be the change you wish to see in the world This is a not an easy challenge but its a start,

a first step towards nation building AND IT STARTS WITH YOU!

Brainstorm among your group members to identify a marginalized community. Point out a

community that is near and accessible to everyone in your group. Consider the community that

is safe and will readily assist you like Barangay Officials, Community Leaders, NGOs, Parish

and school officials etc. Here are the tasks that you are going to perform when you visit the

community. Talk with each other and assign your group members what tasks they need to

    perform. Remember, everyone should participate.

It is important to know the community that you are going to serve. How will you get the profile of

the community? You can get data and information in the barangay hall, interviewing key people

and research using the internet. Gather significant data like the following:

    - Brief history of the community

    - Map

    - Population (estimated number of people)

    - Education (low literacy, non-formal, out-of-school youth)

    - Health and Nutrition (malnutrition, drug-abuse, maternal health)

    - Promotion of Human Rights (Childrens, Elderly, Women, Persons with Disability)- Other data / statistics available in the community

It is vital that you should prepare guide questions during your interview. Assign interviewer(s),

researcher(s) photo and video document officer(s), written documentation officer(s). Show

genuine interest and listen carefully to what theyre saying. Respect their ideas. If you dont

understand something, ask them politely to explain it more deeply.

    III.PLANNING

Assign a group member that will facilitate the discussion, video, photo, written documentation

officers that will record your focus group discussion.

Now that you have identified the issues of the community based on your assessment via the

focus group discussion, it is time to plan. Among the issues discussed in your assessment,

choose at least 2 identified problems/issues in the community and you have to think of creative

ways on HOW YOU CAN EDUCATEthe community and other people regarding the issues and

realities of the community and our country.

How can you educate others? Learn more about the topics and issues by researching in the

library, internet and based on the experiences of the people in the community. Research andidentify laws and policies related to your identified issues in the community. Research on data

and statistics. Educate your group mates as well.

How are you going to present your ideas? It has to have a logical flow. Kindly watch this video

that will help greatly on HOW YOU SHOULD PRESENT YOUR IDEAS, to invite others to

advocate for your cause and inspire actions.
