UNIFORM Policy

Policy All students will wear HillSide’s uniform 100% of the time while at school, as required by this policy. Uniform policy is set at a School Board level. It is mandatory for all students to comply with the uniform policy because it is an enrolment prerequisite. The Board will review uniform as required and practicable. Staff will implement the policy in all sectors of the school.

Rationale

Uniforms are particularly important to our school ethos for the following reasons:

• Uniforms create a culture of equality. There is less competition in terms of fashion, and less incentive for students to use clothing to “out perform” other students;

• Uniforms train students to work as part of a team, and to be obedient to its requirements. Workers, sporting people, and other community organisations often stipulate strict dress codes for those who are part of the organisation;

• Uniforms support the ideal that students are part of the “bigger picture”. Students wearing uniforms realise their role in a community, which goes beyond the individual and focuses on the community aspect;

• Uniforms are part of the general tradition in Australia’s education system, particularly in private school education;

• Uniforms identify a student as part of HillSide Christian College. This ensures accountability when wearing the uniform, both at school and in public;

• Uniforms create respect for boundaries and students understand this better;

• Uniforms worn neatly create and maintain a sense of school pride;

• HillSide is a private school and is, therefore, able to make site specific rules. Uniform is overwhelmingly supported by the Board, parent and staff body.

Modesty and Christian Principles

Our school is part of the Christian community. We believe, therefore, that students need to obedient to authority, respectful, and modestly dressed. To facilitate this, our Uniform Policy provides clear rules and guidelines to meet these goals. Students wear uniform for the vast majority of their attendance at school, however there may be times, on the school site, where students, with the Principal’s permission, may have free dress. This may include: specific free dress days, camps, after school hours events, and other school-based events. It is important that the school understands modesty to be demonstrated by refraining from wearing clothes that:

• Expose the shoulders - no tank tops, singlets, or string strap tops;

• Expose the legs above the knees - all shorts, dresses, and skirts need to be knee length (school sports shorts/skirts excepted);

• Any skimpy clothing - bathers should be sports-type (not bikini). No holes, gaps or tears in clothing are acceptable;

• During any free dress activity students should not have inappropriate slogans or writing that contradicts the Christian message.

The policy may be reviewed periodically and re-published as applicable. The Principal may issue additional instructions within the policy framework as applicable. Strategies

1. Teachers check Years P-12 every morning for uniform compliance.

2. Students with non-compliant uniform items will be issued with a UNIFORM NOTICE 1 (APPENDIX 1 - PINK SLIP).

3. Students not wearing a uniform for a second time in a school term period, will be issued with a UNIFORM NOTICE 2 (APPENDIX 2 - PINK SLIP 2).

4. Blatant breaches (hair colour, non-uniform items) may result in immediate collection of the student by their parent. The student may not return until uniform is compliant.

5. Any further non-compliance with uniform policy will result in an interview with school administration staff and student enrolment reviewed.

6. Further noncompliance, may result in enrolment termination.

Hair Styles, Jewellery and Accessories

BOYS GIRLS

Short, well groomed hair. Hair not beyond collar length. Hair out of eyes.

Light, neutral tones only. No whole colours or unusual dyes e.g. no jet black hair dye, abnormal colours, or fluorescent colours. Any style or colour the Principal deems unsatisfactory.

Footwear Guide

The examples below demonstrate how to comply with the footwear requirements of the policy.

Black leather lace-up shoes only. The incorrect shoe is a sports shoe, not a school shoe. Velcro is unacceptable for students in Years 3-12. Heels should be low, not over two centimetres high.
