• In 2007, the MCH has been amalgamated with erstwhile surrounding Municipalities and constituted as GHMC with an area of 625 sq. km.

Public Transport Facility in Hyderabad
• Till 2004 City Bus (APSRTC) is the only mode of public Transport beside private Auto-rickshaws • The GHMC has taken up the project of MMTS Phase - I from Lingampally – Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Secunderabad-Faluknuma Corridors • The MMTS Phase – I commenced in the year 2004 at a cost of Rs 178 crores for a running length of 43 Kms covering 27 stations with investment share of 50:50 (Railways and State Govt.,) • MMTS is the fastest, Cheapest, Comfortable, Safest and Environmental friendly mode of conveyance of the common citizen

Strategies for Planning and Institutional Strengthening Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA): • Formation of a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) for HMA
• UMTA was constituted vide G.O.Ms.No.624, MA., dated 08.09.2008 under the provision of HMDA Act 2008.
• Objective:- To facilitate coordinated planning and implementation of Urban Transport Programme & Projects and an integrated management of Urban Traffic Transportation System. • UMTA act as a singular authority in decision making and allocation of budget regarding all aspects relating to traffic and transport.

Powers & Functions of UMTA • To oversee implementation of Traffic & Transportation Measures taken up by
various agencies in HMA. • To ensure effective public transportation system in place. • To promote, monitor and ensure effective coordination in implementation of
T&T measures. • To deliberate and recommend effective transportation strategy. • To integrate all the action plan of various departments and ensure their
implementation. • To give directions to different agencies involved in the implementation of T&T
Policy. • Processing of funds for implementation of the proposed projects. • Approval of all traffic & transportation proposals / projects from any agency. • To direct the appropriation / subvention of funds from different departments for
ensuring the implementation of T&T Plans.

Initiatives 1 Comprehensive Transportation Study for HMA. - HMDA & GHMC have entrusted the CTS for HMA to M/s.LEA Associates. 2. Strengthening of Traffic Wing - Formation of 3 divisions exclusively for execution & maintenance of arterial and sub-
arterial roads and pedestrian facilities. - Created Transport & Communication Department in HMDA. - Initiated strengthening of T&T Cell in GHMC. 3. Traffic Signal Improvements. - Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System (HTRIMS) project has been initiated for
total revamp of traffic signalling system with traffic command centres with the latest technology – Project Cost Rs.66.5 Cr.
- Project monitoring unit (PMU) has been set up for implementation of HTRIMS Project. 4. Strategy for Finance – Creation of Urban Transportation Fund. - As per the NUTP it is proposed to create urban transportation fund by allocating 10% of
road tax, by reinvesting all the penalties collected by traffic police. - Expected UTF for 2012 – 13 is Rs.120 Cr.(appx) - UMTA is actively considering the proposal for approval.

• Public Private Partnership – Construction of Modern Bus Shelters, Foot over Bridges & Public Toilets on BOT basis with advt rights.
• Sub Committee has been constituted – To look into the implementation aspects of T&T Projects.
• Initiated ITS Proposals by planning one such initiative along the demarcated stretches which would eventually be extended to entire city.
• Introduction of CNG for all new public transport systems.
• Innovative measures such as combined tickets for the travellers using both MMTS & APSRTC.

• Need for statute in the form of Central Act - As Urban Transportation Issues
requires coordination between Local Bodies, State Govt & Central Govt Agencies.
