THE UK’S THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES

JAN – AUG 2015

Welcome to our spring/summer season! As always, we have shows for all ages, lots of activities and special events, plus, during the summer holidays, we’ll be running theatre workshops and a new film club. I’m delighted to announce that The Velveteen Rabbit is returning for a second season. I very much enjoyed directing this show last year as it’s a story with so much depth and feeling; it really is one of those classics that will stay with you for life. I am also excited to see the return of one of our most successful shows, Henry the Fifth, which originally ran in 2013. For me, this production does what all the best theatre should do – it is smart, original and perceptive, as well as hugely entertaining. For teenagers and adults we welcome Fight Night by Ontroerend Goed, a company I admire for their experimental, questioning and provocative approach to theatre-making. This extraordinary interactive show explores what our relationship with voting says about us. It plays here at the Unicorn in the run-up to the General Election, offering a new generation of young voters the chance to make their voices heard.   We look forward to welcoming you as ever, and hope that you will think of us as your artistic home from home.

THE VELVETEEN RABBIT REAL ISN’T HOW YOU ARE MADE... IT’S A THING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU.By Margery WilliamsDirected by Purni Morell

There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; and for at least two hours the Boy loved him.

Join us for the return of hit show The Velveteen Rabbit, a heart-warming story about a very shy toy rabbit who longs for nothing more than to become real. He spends his days waiting patiently on the nursery floor, watching the Boy play with the other toys and dreaming of being picked up and loved. And then, one day, he is rediscovered and all his hopes start to come true…

First published in 1922, this classic American tale loses nothing of its power, magic and charm in this bold and adventure-filled adaptation for the Unicorn stage.

FOR TEACHERS This season we are offering free teacher CPD sessions and resources for The Velveteen Rabbit, Henry the Fifth, The Caucasian Chalk Circle and Britain’s Best Recruiting Sergeant (in-school workshops also available for the last two).

To discuss any aspect of our schools’ programme, our offer, or to join our schools’ mailing list, please contact our Schools’ Relationship Manager, Ella Macfadyen on 020 7645 0544 or [email protected].

Our programme for August 2015 – June 2016 will be launched in April 2015.

FOR PROFESSIONALS We invite our industry colleagues and visiting professionals to join us on 22 Apr and 21 May for our producers’ showcase. There will be opportunities to meet colleagues and share perspectives and ideas about making work for young people.
