UNICEF High School Clubs February 2015 "Education is a fundamental human right that everyone is entitled to, regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic status. Education allows people to break free from the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future for themselves." Melissa Ly, UNICEF High School Clubs National Council, Northwest Region Education and Gender Equality UNICEF is committed to full and complete access to free quality education for every girl and boy. Still, there are currently an estimated 57 million primary school children who are not in class, over half of whom are girls. UNICEF aims to promote the equal rights of girls to an education. Here are some ways you can get involved: Learn more by checking out the resource calendar, the work of UNICEF, and Malala’s story. Host a movie screening of To Educate a Girl at your school. Facilitate a discussion on education afterwards. Bring food to the movie screening, and have a donations jar for people to donate. This can be a great way to recruit more club members! Organize a fundraiser for Schools for Africa and/or Schools for Asia. See the fundraising toolkit for ideas. Write a newspaper article on how UNICEF promotes universal education and/or gender equality. UNICEF High School Clubs National Council Application The National Council Application for the 2015-2016 school year is now LIVE! Deadline is March 1 st . Please feel free to email [email protected] with any questions. The National Council is a life-changing experience. Not only do members develop strong leadership skills, but they also find a close community of friends who share the same passions as they do. The UNICEF Tap Project The UNICEF Tap Project is just around the corner… be on the lookout for updates! The Tap campaign will help millions of children gain access to clean drinking water. Stay tuned! Tap Project Webinar You are invited to join us for a UNICEF Tap Project webinar on Tuesday, March 3 rd from 7:00 to 8:00pm EST. We hope to see all leaders there! Club Highlights Please send us your club stories so we can highlight your club! Robinson High School hosted a petition signing in November to raise awareness for CRC and to educate their peers. In December, they educated their school on HIV/AIDS. Independence High School is hosting the UNICEF Bay Area’s 2 nd Annual Snowflake Ball, an annual talent show where members juggle, sing, and dance to raise money for UNICEF! Williams High School raised $150 in their first ever fundraiser! Students donated money into different teacher’s bucket, and the teacher with the most money was duct taped to the wall! UNICEF High School Clubs

February 2015

Education and Gender Equality

UNICEF is committed to full and complete access to free quality education for every girl and boy. Still, there are

currently an estimated 57 million primary school children who are not in class, over half of whom are girls. UNICEF aims

to promote the equal rights of girls to an education. Here are some ways you can get involved:

Learn more by checking out the resource calendar, the work of UNICEF, and Malala’s story.
