unfolding - a teatable inspired by springtime
DESCRIPTION
The teatable UNFOLDING is inspired by springtime and all its joyful colours, smells and feelings that come with it. Through several studies and the writings of personal poems, I generated a deeper understanding of springtime. The design is based on four themes distilled from this, including the integration of small elements to create something larger, the use of sensational textures and hidden accents and the creation of a light appearance.TRANSCRIPT

PREFACE
Within the course Form and Inspiration at the Delft Faculty of Architecture I designed UNFOLDING, a teatable inspired by springtime. The design of UNFOLDING is based on four different themes. The themes include the integration of small elements to create something bigger, the use of sensational textures and hidden accents and creating a light appearance. In this booklet the themes will be further described and accompanied by poems and pictures.

Strolling through my springtime garden,
nature welcomes me.
The young bird whistling with delight,
makes my whole world complete.
I am amazed of the speed,
in which the world awakes,
Last week the garden was quiet,
and now! Oo what a joy!
Everywhere I look,
small blossoms are unfolding.
The world is spreading its wings,
together we are one.
UNFOLDING
SMALL ELEMENTS
In springtime small creatures with big potential grow into something substantial.
• Small elements of the teatable are combined to form a strong and bold shape, like the flowerbuds in spring. • The elements of the teatable are joyful and playful like the first flowers.

EMERGING TABLE
top left side:
2 wooden elements and 1 perspex element are assembled in 4 easy steps.
bottom left side:
Combine small elements to create something bigger.
right side:
Easy assembly of the UNFOLDING teatable.
1. Check whether all three elements (2 wooden elements for the frame and 1 perspex tabletop) are in the box.
A. Without the integration of all three elements, the table will be unstable and fall apart.
B. The three seperate small elements together form a strong and stable teatable.
2. Slide the two wooden elements into eachother on the marked line.
3. Put the perspex tabletop on the wooden frame and check whether the holes fit onto the wooden frame.
4. Enjoy your UNFOLDING teatable!

One day the bird awakens,
and notices something has changed.
Something in the air,
in the sky, in the sun,
it wasn’t there before, for sure.
One specific day in the year,
the whole world is awakening,
with sunny colours, fresh smells
and joyful sounds. Like the pheonix,
it rises from it’s ashes.
That special day in May,
small creatures with big potential,
grow into something substantial.
And the bird is singing:
springtime is coming!
SPRINGTIME IS COMING!
SENSATIONALTEXTURES
All the springtime flowers and leaves brighten up our life with their different textures.
• Different materials and textures are combined in the teatable to stimulate the tactile senses. • A combination of warm soft woods and cold smooth perspex is used to encourage the senses.

SENSATIONAL MATERIALS

Combination of materials: soft warm wood and cold smooth perspex.
Combination of colours:natural wood, blossomy pink and playful green.

Come closer and see,
every single tiny flower leave,
For the time being, enjoy,
it is all there is.
Who doesn’t look closer,
will not see my beauty,
The leaves are still small,
hidden in the warmth of the earth.
The flower will rise and grow,
you will see it soon.
But for now,
this is exactly enough.

HIDDEN ACCENTS
In springtime the flowers are still hidden in the flowerbud and the leaves are still hidden in the ground.
• Colourful accents of the teatable are hidden like the flowerbuds in spring.• An abundance of playful greens and accents of blossomy pinks are used.

COLOURFUL DETAILS
top left side:
Pointy and light appearance through shapes inspired by springtime leaves.
bottom left side:
A touch of poetry only visible when the sun is shining.
right side:
Colourful details that differ with the changing sunlight.:
1. Design a playful leave-inspired shape.
1. Add a touch of poetry to the table top.
2. Refine the shape and make the surface less solid.
2. Refine the way how the poem is placed on the table top.
3. Refine the cut-out shapes by adding more detailes shapes.
3. Add a personal handwriting to the poem to make the teatable individual.

The world is silent for one moment,

That perfect little instance,
it is just you and me.
The young bird whistling with delight,

It makes me laugh, it makes me smile,
how perfect nature can be.

AFTERNOON TEA
LIGHT APPEARANCE
In springtime all flowers in nature are not yet fulgrown; they have a fragile appearance.
• The teatable is small, light and thin, like the tiny flowers in springtime.• The teatable is delicate and is covered with details, like english teacups.
