NEEDS and OBJECTIVES

• Current situation– eLearning standards have addressed interoperability

rather than pedagogy– A key recent eLearning specification, IMS-LD is of

European origin. – Unfolding of standards is a lengthy process

• Key UNFOLD objective: To accelerate the adoption, implementation, use and further development of open standards that:– support multiple as well as single learners– support a wide range of present, as well as future,

pedagogical models

• Coordinating action: Jan 2004- Dec 2005

WHAT WE INTEND TO DO

• Support Communities of Practice– Specification developers; System & tools developers– Course authors & Learning designers– Learning providers

• These on-going activities combined with:– 3-monthly small workshops– 6-monthly plenary sessions– Originating studies and disseminating best practice

• Two phases– Awareness raising and CoPs establishment (initial 6

months)– CoP facilitation, workshops, sessions, studies (18

months following)– Sustainability plan at the end.

WHY WE ARE DOING IT

• A European opportunity: OUNL EML became IMS Learning Design.

• To achieve real impact emerging standards need

● tools● examples originating best practices, ● Feedback to tools developers and specifications

bodies from course authors, learning providers and teachers.

• UNFOLD supports and coordinates this activity: facilitation of Communities of Practice, supporting events, articulating and disseminating results

WHAT WE EXPECT AS RESULTS

• Build on existing SIGs and networks to achieve wider and more active Communities of Practice

• Articulate and promote tools development at different levels, with feedback to improve specifications

• Articulate and promote creation of a wide variety of learning designs, to support best educational practice, with feedback to developers and specifications
