National and typical animals

of Poland


There is a zigzag on its back, darker than its base color.

It has got flat triangular head.

It is poisonous.

Adder


Tatra Chamois

It lives in the Tatra mountains.

It is the northernmost population of chamois.

It is herbivorous


White Stork

Black and white plumage.

Legs and a beak are red.

It is a carnivorous bird.


Tatra Marmot

It occurs in the Tatra Mountains.

The color varies from yellowish brown to reddish.

The top of the head is always black.


White-tailed Eagle

Some individuals have been found to live over 25 years.

It is the largest European eagle.

It`s got long, broad, fingered wings, heavy bill and short wedge-shaped tail.

The plant is under strict species protection in Poland.


It occurs in the coastline of the Baltic Sea.

It has a light blue color.

It occurs in the Tatra Mountains.

Its leaves and flowers are covered with white hair and feel woolly which protect the plant from the cold and heat.

grows throughout the country

one of around 15 species endemic to areas outside the Carpathian mountains.

Some historical facts about protection of nature

in Poland


11th century-the first King Boleslaw Chrobry- prohibition of hunting beavers

1423- the king Wladyslaw Jagiello- the protection of yew and “large animals”

King Kazimierz Wielki, in the Piotrków-Wiślica Statutes, ordered the protection of forests

King Zygmunt I- took protection over, inter alia, bison, aurochs, beaver, falcon and swan.



1932, two first national parks were designated: ”Bialowieza National Park”, and ”Pieniny National Park”

In 1939, 211 nature reserves and hundreds of monuments of nature existed.

The oldest National Park- Białowieski park Narodowy

The biggest National Park- Biebrzański park narodowy


BIAŁOWIEŻA NATIONAL PARK

The only Polish natural property designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

European bison – the biggest European land mammal – is the symbol of the Park.


OJCÓW NATIONAL PARK

Poland's smallest national park.

Estabilished in 1956.

Strictly protected.

Its symbol is a bat - Geoffroy's Bat.




NATURAL MONUMENT IN POLAND

The oak “Bartek“ tree

An ancient oak tree.

Natural monument since 1952.

Grows in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains.

Is 625 year old.

30-metre tall.

13.5 metres in girth at its base.

The richest habitat of Paronychia serpentine.


It occurs in rocky serpentine outcrop.

Not found outside Poland.

Occures in the province of Silesia.

Very sensitive to changes in habitat conditions.

Small, with narrow leaves from 3 to 10 mm in length.

Its flowers are 4-patched, tiny, white, gathered in a loose in florescence.

Grows up to 15 centimeters on rocks and on Jurassic monadnocks.
