• UNEP HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN GEF WATERS IN THE PILOT PHASE (1991-1994) AND DURING PHASE I AND PHASE II (1994 TO PRESENT).

UNEP IW Portfolio

As of September 2002, the UNEP/GEF portfolio in international waters is valued at US$ 179 million, comprising 11 ongoing full size projects and 2 ongoing medium-sized projects.

UNEP IN GEF-III

UNEP's project portfolio will focus on the following areas in GEF Phase III:

Integrated Land and Water Resources Management. UNEP will pilot a mega-regional ecosystem approach to integrated land and water resources management for selected mega-basins.

Integrated drainage basins and coastal zone management. UNEP will develop a portfolio of projects that are built on the guidelines for Integrated Coastal Area and River Basin Management (ICARM), and linked to it will be

Formulation of Regional Programmes of Action for Protection of the Marine Environment from LBA. UNEP will develop, in collaboration with the GPA Office, a number of projects to elaborate regional programmes of action for addressing land based activities affecting the integrity of the ecosystem.
