Immunization Compliance Policy

It is the policy of the University of New England that all students are in compliance with the State of Maine immunization

requirements for post secondary schools. It is the expectation that all students will arrive at The University of New

England with all of their immunization requirements met. All students attending classes at the University of New

England must have an up to date Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria attenuated pertussis) vaccination within 10 years of first day

of attendance and must have completed Two (2) MMR (measles (rubeola), mumps, and rubella) vaccines if born after

1957. Additionally, residential students matriculating to the University of New England for the first time are required to

have a Meningococcal Immunization.

Online Students with required clinical training component must meet the Immunization Requirements for post

secondary educational programs of the State in which they reside/train.

REQUIRED BY STATE OF MAINE/UNE ALL STUDENTS

Tetanus, Diphtheria, attenuated Pertussis (TDAP):

The administration of TDAP vaccination must be documented as having been administered by an appropriate health

care provider within ten years of matriculation. Students for whom the ten years will elapse during their anticipated

matriculation are expected to obtain a booster update at the appropriate time.

Measles, Mumps and Rubella:

The administration of the vaccine or combination of vaccines on two separate occasions must be documented by an

appropriate health care provider. Evidence of Immunity in the form of a laboratory titer must be provided if there is no

documentation or history of immunization. If the titer proves negative then two administrations of the vaccine are

required. No further testing is required.

REQUIRED FOR ALL INCOMING UNE STUDENTS PLANNING ON LIVING IN RESIDENTIAL HOUSING:

Meningococcal: (Required Residential Students)

Meningococcal immunization is a requirement of matriculation for all students living in residential housing or other UNE

approved congregate living situations. Given the virlulence of this disease it is mandatory for matriculating residential

students to be immunized. Please contact Student Health Services on the Biddeford or Portland Campus for

information on how to become immunized for Meningitis.

IN ADDITION: it is the policy of the University of New England that matriculating students in the various colleges of

health professions; College of Dental Medicine, College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Pharmacy, Westbrook

College of Health Professions , including students in online programs that require a clinical training component, will be

required to complete the following immunizations and titers prior to, or within five (5) days after entering any portion or

their academic curriculum:

Hepatitis B:

The administration of a Hepatitis B vaccine on three separate occasions must be documented by an appropriate health

care provider. UNE Health Professions students must also provide laboratory evidence of a positive, protective titer for

Hepatitis B. If the titer proves negative or equivocal, then a repeat Hepatitis B Vaccine Series of 3 vaccines is required.

Additional titer is strongly advised in 6-8 weeks.

Varicella:

The administration of the Varicella vaccine on two separate occasions or a positive titer must be documented by an

appropriate health care provider. Students with history of the disease of chickenpox must provide evidence of immunity

with laboratory titer. If the titer proves negative then two administrations of the vaccine are required. No further

testing is required.

IN ADDITION:

Tuberculin Skin Testing: PPD (Purified Protein Derivative)

TB testing is an important step in disease prevention and health promotion. All UNE Health Professions students are

required to obtain a two step PPD. Proof of administration and results must be documented by an appropriate health

care provider within the year in which the student begins matriculation at UNE. Students anticipating clinical rotations

must have proof of administration and results documented by an appropriate health care provider between the dates of

January 1st and May 1st in the year that the clinical rotation begins. Two step PPD is defined as PPD testing on two

separate occasions separated by at least two weeks and within one year. Annual PPD testing is required thereafter. If a

student has received BCG (Bacillus of Calmete and Guerin) vaccine within the previous 5 years, or has had a positive PPD

and is asymptomatic, he or she will not receive a PPD test. They will be required to have an annual symptom review

and exam by an appropriate health care provider. If a student has received or is in the process of treatment for TB,

Student Health Services must have documentation of such treatment. No further testing or monitoring is required.

Note: Meeting immunization requirements is a professional responsibilty of all Health Professions Students at UNE.

The University of New England will not place students in clinical training environments necessary to complete the

requirements for their degree without the required immunizations. Affiliated clinical venues exercise their right to

protect their patients and their right to not assume any liability for the transmission or contraction of infectious

diseases amenable to immunization. The UNE Student Health Center will provide guidance and assistance with

completion of these requirements if necessary. Expenses related to completing these requirements through UNE

Student Health will be the responsibility of the student or will be billed to the students insurance.

Students who are not in compliance with Maine State Immunization Law and UNE policy will not be allowed to attend

classes, attend clinical experiences, be issued UNE ID cards, or check in to their campus housing until they are in

compliance.
