Introduction Introduction
UNDP works in nearly 170 countries and
territories, helping to achieve the eradication
of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities
and exclusion. We help countries to develop
policies, leadership skills, partnering
abilities, institutional capabilities and build
resilience in order to sustain development
results
Support to Countries to Achieve SDGs

UNDP Climate Change Adaptation Global Health Evaluation Results
Supporting developing countries to adapt to a changing climate
Global: Piloting Climate Change Adaptation to Protect Human Health Impacts
• Implementation of community-based public health education campaigns on safe use of waste water and on
vector control (Barbados)
• Prediction mechanism for climate sensitive infectious diseases (Bhutan)
• Implementation of heat-health warning system in 3 pilot cities (China)
• Implementation of EW & response system w M&E of effectiveness (Fiji)
• Development of operational procedures for rapid response when elevated health risk from wastewater
detected (Jordan)
• Training and support for district health officers in use of decision support system, incl met data (Kenya)
• Development of protocols, M&E of intervention in reducing summer peaks of summer peaks of diarrhea
(Uzbekistan)
Best Practices
• Excellent example of including multi-UN agency cooperation and collaboration, capacity building and
mainstreaming. Combined strength (UNDP and WHO) resulted in supportive and mutually reinforcing roles
in implementation.
• Capacity building approach can be used by other countries as they begin vulnerability and adaptation
assessments and conducting health component of NAPs
Lessons Learned
• Four years is a short time to demonstrate success of an adaptation project
UNDP Climate Change Adaptation Projects in Development
Supporting developing countries to adapt to a changing climate
Regional: Building Resilience of Health Systems in Asian LDCs to Climate Change
Project details: $9M
Implementing Partner: WHO
Project Objective: Increase the adaptive capacity of national health systems and institutions, and sub-national
level actors, to respond to and manage long-term climate-sensitive health risks in six Asian LDCs (Bangladesh,
Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Nepal, Timor-Leste).
Project Outcomes:
1.1: Institutional capacities are strengthened to effectively integrate climate risks and adaptation options in
health sector planning and implementation
2.1 Effective decision-making for health interventions is enabled through generation of information and
improved surveillance and/or early warning systems
3.1 Climate resilience is enhanced in health service delivery
4.1 Enhanced regional cooperation and knowledge exchange for promoting scale-up and replication of
interventions
4.2 HNAP are effectively integrated into ongoing NAP processes

Coastal Resilience project in Timor-Leste (UNDP/LDCF) • Cross sectoral policy support
to protect coastal ecosystems
• Rehabilitation of 1000ha of mangrove forest
• Sustainable livelihoods support to 26,000 people
• Integrated ecosystems approach to support CCA and DRR

Significant results are being achieved in improving institutional governance in the health
sector, strengthening national systems and capacities, transforming policies and
regulatory frameworks, and promoting human rights of people affected by the three
diseases, thus ensuring sustainability and resilience of the health services.
