If you're planning to invest, you need to know whether you are prepared to risk all or just a very small proportion of your money. How much risk are you willing to take?

Part 2 Ask – Do you recognise yourself?

Page 3: Understanding Your Attitude To Risk part 2

People who fall into this category are uncomfortable with investments that put them at risk of losing money. This means that although they are less likely to lose the money they invest, there is a distinct possibility that it may not return enough over the medium to longer term (five years or more) to keep up with inflation, particularly after the deduction of any tax. Its spending power could therefore end up lower than they had hoped, possibly lower than it was at the start. The low risk investor may evaluate investments largely by how protected their money is and the degree to which a level of return is guaranteed.

Risk Profile – Low

Cautious investors are likely to be comfortable with investments that have some risk in order to reach their investment objectives. They want better returns than those offered by a bank or building society savings account and are prepared to put a limited part of their money in stock market investments. While the possibility of small fluctuations in their wealth doesn't bother them, they would prefer investments that are unlikely to fall substantially in value by the end of their intended investment period. They would be happier with a steadier but lower rate of growth than a higher but more volatile one and they accept that this may limit the potential for their money to grow and that there is a possibility that it may not maintain its spending power.

Risk Profile – Cautious

Balanced investors are comfortable with investments that offer some regular fluctuations in the value of their portfolio in exchange for the opportunity to achieve above average increases in their wealth. They want the spending power of their investments to increase, or their income to maintain its spending power over time. They are happy to consider putting some of their money into stock market investments with the aim of getting a better return. They accept that they could make a loss on the money they invest.

Risk Profile – Balanced

People who consider themselves adventurous investors are comfortable with regular fluctuations in the value of their portfolio and are willing to take on slightly higher risk than most other people in order to increase their wealth. They are aware that to achieve higher returns they will need to put a significant part of their portfolio in stock market investments. By investing in this way, their money could be subject to large fluctuations in value and that the potential for gain and loss is greater.

Risk Profile - Adventurous

Risk Profile - Speculative

Speculative investors have high risk tolerance. They are comfortable with significant short-term fluctuations in the value of their investments in exchange for superior returns over the long term. They recognise that the majority of their investments will be linked to various markets, possibly with some exposure to emerging economies. Despite higher expected returns, this approach gives a very real possibility that they may not get back as much money as they put in.
