Understand KDP Select

● KDP Select requires exclusive digital rights for 90 days.

○ You cannot publish your eBook anywhere else (including your own website) during the 90-day period.

○ This restriction does not apply to print books. You are free to publish a print version of your book during this time if desired.

Understand KDP Select

● You can offer your eBook for free for 5 days when it's enrolled in KDP Select

○ Promoting your eBook when it's free can lead to increased "sales" which can improve your Amazon ranking.

○ The downside is that people outside your target market may "buy" your book when it's free and then leave negative reviews.

Understand KDP Select

● Amazon Prime members can borrow your book for free when it's enrolled in KDP Select.

○ This only applies to those with actual Kindle devices.

○ You receive royalties every time someone borrows your book.

What All the Kindle Publishing Options Mean

After you've made the decision on whether or not to enroll in KDP Select, you'll still have various decisions to make.

The next slides will go over the options, one by one.

Book Title

● Put only the actual title in this field.

● Don't put anything extra such as, "FREE bonus .mp3!"

Publication Date

You can leave this blank; Amazon will put that in when the book is published.

Publisher

You may leave this field blank if desired. However:

● You may add your company name to this field.

● Your company is the publisher, even if you don't have an official publishing company.

Categories

● The category options in Amazon are pretty limited.

● Pick one or two that seem to fit best.

Keywords

● You can choose up to 7 keywords; use all of them!

● Keywords can be more than one word.

● Separate your keywords with commas.

Upload Your Cover Image

● Ideally use a photo that is saved as a .jpg

● When designing your cover, keep in mind how it will look as a small thumbnail.

● Keep in mind what the image will look like in black and white since some Kindle devices are B&W only.

Digital Rights Management (DRM)

This decision is important -- it can NOT be changed!

● DRM makes it harder for your book to be shared illegally. ○ In most cases, you'll want to enable DRM, but. . .○ If your primary goal for your Kindle book is lead

generation, you may want to choose not to enable DRM.

Upload Your Kindle Book

● Your next step is to upload your Kindle book!

● Upload your Kindle book as a .doc rather than .docx

● Don't stress over this; you can upload a new version at any time.

Publishing Rights

● If you've written the book yourself, select, "Worldwide publishing rights."

● Restrictions apply to books that contain material that is public domain.

Royalties

There are two royalty options:

● 70%○ For books priced from $2.99 - $9.99

● 35% ○ For books priced between $0.99 and $2.98

and books $10 and up. ○ In most cases it pays to price your book

between $2.99 and $9.99
