Project timeline continued
• An instructional designer joined the workgroup to help clarify content and delivery method (February 2019)• Provided a rubric template to outline goals and content for
each section
• Workgroup delivered content for rebuild (May 2019)• Each workgroup member developed and wrote content for
one of the six modules
• Content integration and site design by Brittni (June 2019 – December 2019)
• Launched Ecampus Canvas Orientation (January 2020)

Orientation workgroup goals
1. Identify the key information online students need in an orientation
2. Help outline an OSU degree and what it will take to earn a degree
3. Prompt discussion around the cost of earning a degree• Financial
• Time
• Commitments outside of school
4. Prepare students to be successful online learners

The redesign process
Transition the content developed by the orientation
workgroup into the Canvas site. Restructure
formatting and create alignment
with module learning objectives.
Create points of completion
throughout the orientation to mark
progress. Each module has a
completion message and an encouraging GIF to help keep the
momentum up!
Consider opportunities for
engagement. Insert reflection activities,
end of module quizzes, and helpful
tips. These were built as ungraded
surveys and practice quizzes.

Key Changes Made
1. Utilized the Ecampus course template as a framework
2. Familiarize students with standard course navigation, module overviews, tasks lists, and end of module completion pages (each page opens sequentially)
3. Emphasis placed on visual design, building multiple opportunities for interacting with the content, and quizzes/reflections

Before – Welcome Page
9OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY
After – Welcome Page
Consistent banner images, headlines, and organized sections help the student navigate through each page/module. The expected time commitment increasedfrom 25-40 minutes to 1 hour and a half.

Content changes and restructuring
1. Identify sections to “chunk” content.
2. Create visuals/multimedia to help clarify concepts.
3. Consider the areas that may need additional reflection or assessment (in consideration of module learning objectives).
11OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY
Incorporating visual design
• Provided an overview of the types of funding
• Each page following is divided by funding type
• Created a visual to show the variety available

We wanted to help students feel connected to OSU from the beginning by building their sense of belonging. By welcoming them to the OSU community and sharing that they are Beavers, this helps solidify their connection to the university at a distance.
Information is shared through written content, multimedia, interactives (H5P) and includes links to read further information on OSU websites as needed. This allows for multiple means of engagement and empowers the user to determine how deep they want to go into a subject beyond the basic information provided.
Reflection questions mid-module and end of module quick checks. These are multiple choice, matching, and fill in the blank. Once submitted, there are custom responses for each choice.
Creating opportunities for engagement

Creating opportunities for engagement
Introduce points of reflection by letting the student know that they will be asked to reflect on the topic they just learned (and why we are asking them to do this!)
The following page will have the ungraded quiz with the reflection questions for them to answer.

What other commitments do you have outside of
school? How do you see school
fitting in?
What is motivating you to start or return to complete your degree?
If you had to summarize the reasons in a sentence, what would you say?
What is your goal in earning your degree? (This can fall into professional or personal)
Was there anything about the major you are pursuing and other majors that surprised you? (Asked after the major comparison exercise)
How prepared do you feel to complete your degree
online through OSU?

Student takeaways
“While taking the online [web] orientation, I got a very general idea of what to expect from online courses, but the Canvas orientation was more detailed and I feel that I have a much stronger understanding of what steps I need to take, how to navigate through the tools that I will need to utilize and the resources available to me.
For example, scheduling the initial call with my student success coach before the end of the orientation really helped me to feel like the ball was rolling and I was on the right track!”
– Ashtyn Stubbe, Political Science Ecampus Student

Staff takeaways
“I complete a one on one orientation with new business students who’ve completed the Ecampus orientation prior to their first appointment with me. While thorough, the prior Ecampus orientation for new students was dry and not engaging, and I found myself covering information they should have learned from that first orientation. The new Ecampus orientation is much more interactive and engaging than its earlier iteration, and a big result is that now my new students come to me with a better understanding of the many resources available through Ecampus than they came away with from the old orientation. I’ve definitely noticed less anxiety about and a better understanding of the support they’ll receive as online students from OSU.”
– Josie Miranda, Academic Advisor, College of Business

Ideas for other implementations
• Start with the goals and objectives (what are you hoping to accomplish and does it need to be in Canvas?)
• Develop a framework of content and identify clear sections
• Sort content into modules and create a clear pathway for navigation (home page and menu, consistent module layout)
• Make decisions regarding activities and assessments in line with learning objectives
