Bachelor Degree Rules Awards 1. (2) In no case shall any of the awards be con-ferred more than once on the same candidate.

(3) Where, under these Rules, a candidate hasqualified for more than one of the awards referred toin Rule 1(1), the candidate shall elect only one ofsuch awards to be conferred.

(4) A candidate who holds a Bachelor Degree oran Honours Bachelor Degree may, upon subsequentcompletion of the requirements for a combinedaward with that Bachelor Degree or HonoursBachelor Degree, elect to have the Diploma ofEducation, the Diploma of Chemistry in Industry orthe Degree of Bachelor of Laws, as the case may be,conferred separately.

(5) To qualify for an award referred to in Rule1(1), a candidate must complete a Program of Studyapproved by the Academic Senate for that award,provided that the Academic Senate may determinethe maximum number of credit points in which acandidate may enrol in one half year period.

Registration2. (1) In these Rules, unless otherwise stated orimplied, a designated Executive Dean of Facultymeans the Executive Dean of the Faculty which theDeputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost) has determinedpursuant to Rule 2(2).

(2) A candidate shall be enrolled for an awardreferred to in Rule 1(1) and shall be registered in aFaculty of the University as determined by theDeputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost).

(3) A candidate may, under conditions deter-mined by the Academic Senate, change the awardfor which they are enrolled.

(4)(a)Where a candidate is enrolled in nine ormore credit points in a study period, thecandidate shall be designated as a full-timestudent;

(b) Where a candidate is enrolled in less thannine credit points in a study period, thecandidate shall be designated as a part-timestudent;

(c) Where a candidate’s total enrolment is inunits which are classified external, thatcandidate shall be designated as an externalstudent.

Schedules to the Rules3. (1) The Academic Senate prescribes a Scheduleof General Requirements for the awards specified inthese Rules.

(2) The Academic Senate prescribes a Scheduleof Programs of Study approved for candidatesseeking to qualify for an award under these Rules.

(3) The Academic Senate prescribes a Scheduleof Undergraduate Units approved as qualifyingunder these Rules.

Programs of Study4. (1) A candidate shall select a Program of Studyapproved by Academic Senate pursuant to Rule 3(2)for the award for which the candidate is enrolled,and shall enrol in units to complete that Program.

(2) Unless determined otherwise by resolutionof Academic Senate:

(a) a candidate’s selection of an approvedProgram of Study and enrolment in units tocomplete that Program of Study willrequire the approval of the designatedExecutive Dean of Faculty, or where theAcademic Senate has so determined, theExecutive Dean of another Faculty;

(b) any subsequent change to a candidate’senrolment will require the approval of thedesignated Executive Dean of Faculty, orwhere the Academic Senate has so deter-mined, the Executive Dean of anotherFaculty.

(3) A candidate who wishes to add an internalunit may do so only in the first two weeks of thestudy period. A candidate who wishes to add anexternal unit may do so only in the first week of thestudy period. No approval is required to add a unitwithin these time periods.

Honours Degrees5. A candidate for an Honours degree shall meetthe requirements for candidature as determined bythe Academic Senate and shall undertake andsatisfactorily complete an approved program ofstudy.

Prerequisite Studies6. (1) A candidate may not enrol in a unit unlessthe conditions for enrolment therein specified in theSchedule of Units of Study are satisfied or theExecutive Dean of the Faculty providing the unithas granted permission for enrolment.

(2) A candidate who has enrolled in a unit inbreach of Rule 6(1) shall nevertheless be treated asa candidate enrolled in that unit for the purposes ofRules 11 and 12.

Work Required to Gain Credit Points7. (1) The determination whether a candidate hascompleted satisfactorily a unit is made by theAcademic Senate on the recommendation of theExecutive Dean of the Faculty in which the unit isoffered.

(2) In order to complete a unit satisfactorily andto gain the number of credit points specified for thatunit a candidate shall:

(a) attend such classes;(b) complete such essays, exercises and practi-

cal work and sit for such tests and exami-nations; and

(c) reach a satisfactory level of achievement insuch essays, exercises, practical work, testsand examinations

as may be determined by the Executive Dean of theFaculty in which the unit is provided.

(3) Where a candidate is prevented by unavoid-able disruption from satisfying the requirements ofRule 7(1), where this relates to a supplementaryexamination for the unit the candidate shall reportthe circumstances in writing (supported by a med-ical certificate or other proper evidence) by no laterthan 7 days after the examination to the AcademicRegistrar, and the Executive Dean of the Faculty inwhich the unit is provided may take into accountsuch disruption when assessing the candidate’s per-formance.

(4) Unavoidable disruption to studies is definedas resulting from an event or set of circumstanceswhich:

(a) could not have reasonably been anticipated,avoided or guarded against by the studentand

(b) was beyond the student’s control and(c) caused substantial disruption to the stu-

dent’s capacity for effective study and/orthe completion of required work and

(d) interfered with the otherwise satisfactoryfulfilment of unit or course requirements.

Examinations8. Examinations for a unit are conducted by suchmeans as the Executive Dean of the Faculty inwhich the unit is offered determines.

9. (1) Where a candidate:

(a) is prevented by unavoidable disruptionfrom attending an examination in a unitoffered by the University, or

(b) immediately prior to an examination wasaffected by unavoidable disruption whichthe candidate believes seriously prejudicedthe performance at the examination, or

(c) is to a substantial degree affected byunavoidable disruption during the course ofan examination, and either during or imme-diately after the examination reports thefact to the supervisor in charge

the candidate may as soon as practicable after suchexamination, and in any case not later than the day

following the final day of the examination period, asnotified in the examination timetable (or withinsuch further time as the Academic Registrar may inspecial cases permit), report the circumstances inwriting (supported by a medical certificate or otherproper evidence) to the Academic Registrar andrequest that they be taken into account whenassessing the result of such examination. Wheresuch candidate is personally unable to take theaction required in such case by this Rule, someother person may take such action on thecandidate’s behalf.

(2) The Academic Senate, on the recommenda-tion of the Executive Dean of the Faculty in whichthe unit is provided (made after consideration of arequest and supporting evidence submitted pursuantto Rule 9(1)), may in its discretion permit the can-didate to sit for a special examination. A specialexamination shall be conducted by such means andon such date as determined by the Executive Deanof Faculty, provided that the examination must beheld not later than six weeks after the notification ofexamination results for the study period. In specialcircumstances, the Academic Senate, on the recom-mendation of the Executive Dean of Faculty, maydetermine a later date but before the commencementof the next succeeding regular examination period.

Grades10. (1) A candidate’s grade for a unit offered by theUniversity is determined upon an assessment ofperformance in required coursework and/orexaminations. In deciding the grade, due weight isgiven to the level at which the unit is offered.

(2) The grade of a candidate is recorded as fol-lows:

HD High Distinction denotes performance which meetsall unit objectives in such anexceptional way and with suchmarked excellence that it deservesthe highest level of recognition

D Distinction denotes performance which clearlydeserves a very high level of recog-nition as an excellent achievementin the unit

Cr Credit denotes performance which is sub-stantially better than would nor-mally be expected of competentstudents in the unit

P Pass denotes performance which satis-fies unit objectives

PC Conceded Pass denotes performance which meetsunit objectives only marginally

F Fail denotes performance which doesnot meet unit objectives

(3) After considering the recommendation of theExecutive Dean of the Faculty in which a unit isoffered and having regard to the subject matter ofthe unit and to the method of teaching it, theAcademic Senate may determine that the grades

specified in Rule 10(2) are not appropriate to thatunit. In this case, the grade of a candidate is record-ed as follows:

Satisfactory (S) which indicates that, subject toRule 7(1), the candidate has com-pleted the unit satisfactorily; or

Fail (F) which indicates that the candidatehas failed to complete the unit sat-isfactorily.

(4) Where a candidate has undertaken a unit atanother tertiary institution as part of the course, thegrade for the candidate shall be recorded as follows:

Satisfactory (S) which indicates that the candidatehas completed the unit satisfactori-ly; or

Fail (F) which indicates that the candidatehas failed to complete the unit sat-isfactorily.

(5) The Academic Senate may determine therange of scaled marks which apply to the gradesreferred to above.

(6) Once a grade has been determined by theAcademic Senate it shall not be changed except:

(a) following an appeal by the student pursuantto the provisions set down by the AcademicSenate; or

(b) in exceptional circumstances, a change isapproved by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Provost) on behalf of the Academic Senateor the Executive Dean of the Faculty inwhich the unit is offered, provided that theapplication for a change is submitted to theAcademic Registrar not later than sixweeks after the notification of examinationresults for the study period; or in excep-tional circumstances, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost) may approve onbehalf of the Academic Senate an applica-tion submitted at a later date but before thecommencement of the next succeedingexamination period.

(7) Unless the Academic Senate otherwise deter-mines,

(a) a candidate who has completed satisfactori-ly the approved units for an HonoursDegree may be awarded Honours Class I,Honours Class II Division 1, Honours ClassII Division 2, Honours Class III;

(b) a candidate who has, to the satisfaction ofthe Academic Senate, completed a programof study for the degree of Bachelor of Lawswith outstanding merit may be awarded thatdegree with First Class or Second ClassHonours;

(c) a candidate who has, to the satisfaction ofthe Academic Senate, completed the pro-gram of study for the degree of Bachelor ofLegal Studies with outstanding merit may

be awarded that degree with First or SecondClass Honours.

(d) a candidate who has, to the satisfaction ofthe Academic Senate, completed a programof study for the degree of Bachelor ofEngineering with outstanding merit may beawarded that degree with Honours Class I,Honours Class II Division 1 or HonoursClass II Division 2.

Non-compliance With Unit

Requirements11. (1) If a candidate has not complied with therequirements of Rule 7 relating to a particular unitthe candidate may be excluded by the ExecutiveDean of the Faculty in which the unit is providedfrom further participation in and from attendance atany examination for that unit. A candidate who isexcluded, under this Rule, is deemed to have failedthe unit.

(2) Where, notwithstanding a candidate’s failureto comply with the requirements, the candidate isnot excluded, the Academic Senate may, on the rec-ommendation of the Executive Dean of the Facultyin which the unit is provided, permit the candidateto meet the requirements for its satisfactory comple-tion by such date as determined by the ExecutiveDean of Faculty: provided that such date must benot later than 30 August in the same year for first-half year units and 30 January in the succeedingyear for second-half year and full-year units. In spe-cial circumstances, the Academic Senate, on the rec-ommendation of the Executive Dean of Faculty, maydetermine a later date but before the commencementof the next succeeding regular examination period.

Discontinuance of Studies12. (1) Where a candidate is permitted to change theenrolment in units of study pursuant to Rule 4(2)(b)following application in writing to the AcademicRegistrar and such change includes discontinuanceof a unit or units offered by the University, or wherea candidate discontinues all the units enrolled:

(a) the candidate is deemed not to have beeneffectively enrolled in a unit if they discon-tinue before the unit census date;

(b) the candidate is deemed to have withdrawnfrom a unit if the candidate discontinuesafter the unit census date but

(i) for units offered in University vacationperiods, no later than seven days after theunit census date; and

(ii) for all other units, no later than four weeksafter the unit census date. In such cases, thecandidate’s record is endorsed with the let-ter “W” denoting “Withdrawn”.

(c) the candidate is deemed to have failed inany unit where the candidate’s discontinu-ance is other than as provided in clauses (a)or (b) in Rule 12(1). In such cases the can-didate’s record is endorsed with the letter“F” denoting “Failed”. If a candidateclaims that such discontinuance is due to

unavoidable disruption, the candidate mayreport the circumstances in writing (sup-ported by a medical certificate or otherproper evidence) to the AcademicRegistrar, whereupon the Executive Deanof the Faculty providing any unit which thecandidate has discontinued may determinethat the candidate be not recorded as havingfailed in the unit and the candidate’s recordis endorsed with the letter “W” denoting“Withdrawn”.

(2) Subject to Rule 12(1), if a candidate has dis-continued all the units in the course the candidate isnot permitted to enrol again except with the permis-sion of the Academic Senate.

(3) A candidate whose record in a unit has beenendorsed with the letter “W” or the grade “F” may,if the candidate has not been excluded therefrompursuant to Rule 14, re-enrol in such unit in a lateryear provided that such enrolment is subject to theprovision of Rule 4, including any limitationimposed upon the enrolment in that unit. A candi-date re-enrolling shall not receive credit for anywork previously performed in that unit.

(4) For the purposes of this Rule:

(a) a candidate may be deemed by theAcademic Registrar to have discontinued:

(i) all the units in the program of study if thecandidate fails to confirm enrolment by thedate specified by the Academic Registrar;

(ii) any unit, if, in the opinion of the ExecutiveDean of the Faculty providing the unit, thecandidate has abandoned that unit;

(b) the effective date of discontinuance of aunit is the date of receipt by the AcademicRegistrar of written notification from thecandidate, provided that in special casesthe Academic Registrar may determine adifferent date.

(i) Where a candidate discontinues a unitwhich was being undertaken at another ter-tiary institution as part of the program ofstudy the candidate’s record is endorsed asfollows:F denoting “Failed” if the candidate isdeemed to have failed the unit by that insti-tution; or,W denoting “Withdrawn” if the candidate isdeemed not to have failed the unit by thatinstitution; provided that if the candidate is deemed notto have been effectively enrolled in the unitby that institution, the unit is deleted fromthe candidate’s record.

Exclusion From Enrolment13. (1) A candidate who is taking an unduly longtime to complete a course may be excluded fromfurther enrolment in any units. For the purpose ofthis Rule, an unduly long time will be regarded as10 years of effective enrolment.

(2) A candidate who fails to meet the requiredminimum rate of progress in a program of study isexcluded from further enrolment with an appealprocess as outlined in Bachelor Degree Rule 15.

For the purpose of this rule, minimum rate ofprogress is considered to be unsatisfactory at theend of an academic year if the student has attemptedat least 36 credit points after 1 January 2006 with anoverall Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 1.00and in the year under consideration has a GPA ofless than 1.00.

14. (1) A student who commenced candidature after1 January 1987 for the degree of Bachelor of LegalStudies, the degree of Bachelor of Laws, or for acombined award including the Bachelor of Lawsand who has failed to complete a unit prescribed byAcademic Senate to be completed for this degree,after having been enrolled therein twice, is excludedfrom further enrolment in any units for the degree ofBachelor of Legal Studies or for the degree ofBachelor of Laws.

(2) A student

(a) who commenced candidature after

1 January 2000 for one of the following

degrees

All Bachelor degrees with the Diploma of

Education

Bachelor of Education (Primary)

Bachelor of Education (Secondary)

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood

Education); or(b) who commenced candidature after 1

January 2001 for the degree of Bachelor ofTeaching (Early Childhood Services) or forthe degree Bachelor of Teaching (EarlyChildhood Education: Birth to School Age)and who has failed to complete a unitoffered by the Faculty of Human Sciencesafter having been enrolled therein twicebecause of a failure in the practicum com-ponent of that unit, (these units are listed inthe schedule of prescribed practicum unitsfor the degrees listed above) is excludedfrom the degrees listed in Rule 14(2) andthe Graduate Diploma in Education and theGraduate Diploma in Early ChildhoodEducation.

(3) A student who commenced candidature after1 January 2001 in the Bachelor of ChiropracticScience degree who has failed to complete a unitprescribed for that degree (These units are listed inthe schedule of prescribed units for the degree) afterhaving been enrolled therein twice is excluded fromthe Bachelor of Chiropractic Science degree pro-gram.

(4) A student who commenced candidature after1 January 2005 for the Bachelor of Commerce–Accounting degree or for a combined degree awardor double degree award including the Bachelor ofCommerce–Accounting degree who has failed tocomplete ACCG200, ACCG201, ACCG250,ACCG251 or ACCG253 after having been enrolled

therein twice is excluded from the Bachelor ofCommerce–Accounting degree or the combineddegree award or the double degree award includingthe Bachelor of Commerce–Accounting degree.

(5) A student

(a) who is excluded pursuant to Rule 14 will bepermitted to apply for internal transfer toany other undergraduate program for whichthey are eligible or to be considered foradmission to any other undergraduate pro-gram after making application through theUniversities Admission Centre;

(b) who is excluded pursuant to Rule 14because of double failure in a prescribedunit and who was enrolled in a combinedaward or double degree program will bepermitted to continue that part of the pro-gram of study that is not affected by thedouble failure in a prescribed unit as speci-fied in the Bachelor Degree Rules or to beconsidered for admission to any otherundergraduate program after making appli-cation through the Universities AdmissionCentre.

Appeals15. (1) A candidate who is excluded pursuant toRule 13 or Rule 14 may appeal to the AcademicSenate. The appeal is to be submitted in writing tothe Academic Registrar no later than the datespecified by the Academic Registrar.

(2) The Academic Senate shall establish theAcademic Appeals Committee which may dismissthe appeal, determine that the candidate may applyfor permission to re-enrol after the expiration of onecalendar year, or permit the candidate to re-enrol,and may impose conditions upon such re-enrolment.

(3) A candidate excluded pursuant to Rule 13 orRule 14 may apply to re-enrol after the expiration oftwo calendar years following such exclusion, orafter the expiration of one calendar year if so deter-mined pursuant to Rule 15. Any application for per-mission to re-enrol after the expiration of the periodof exclusion shall be determined by the AcademicSenate. Any applicant who is refused permission toenrol again pursuant to Rule 15 may appeal to theAcademic Appeals Committee which may determinethe matter as it thinks fit.

Enrolled in a Unit for the Third Time16. (1) Except as provided in Rule 14, a candidatewho has twice had a grade recorded for a unitoffered by the University pursuant to Rule 10 maynot enrol again in that unit, except with the priorpermission of the Executive Dean of the Faculty.

(2) The Academic Senate may determinewhether a Faculty is exempt from the application ofRule 16(1).

(3) A candidate not permitted to enrol again in aunit may appeal to the Academic AppealsCommittee which may determine the matter as itthinks fit.

Credit for Previous Study17. (1) Where a candidate has qualified for a degree,diploma or certificate of the University or of anyother university or other tertiary institution orundertakes one or more units at another tertiaryinstitution, other than as part of a program of studypursuant to Rule 4, the candidate may be grantedsuch credit as may be determined by the AcademicSenate.

(2) A student who was not a candidate for anaward and who successfully completed one or moreunits from the Schedule of Units of Study may, withthe approval of the Academic Senate, be permittedto count that unit or units should the student be sub-sequently accepted as a candidate under these Rules.

Not to Count for Credit18. (1) A candidate may not count for credit towardsany award under these Rules the credit points of aunit if the candidate has already successfullycompleted a unit designated by the same unit codein the Schedule of Undergraduate Units.

(2) Except with the approval of the AcademicSenate, on the recommendation of the ExecutiveDean of the Faculty concerned, a candidate may notcount for credit towards any award under these rulesthe credit points in respect of a unit:

(a) if the candidate has successfully completedand is counting for credit another unit des-ignated in the Schedule of Units of Study asnot to count for credit with that unit; or

(b) if the candidate has been granted creditpursuant to Rule 17 for one or more units ina program of study at another tertiary insti-tution, and has successfully completed inthat program a unit which, in the opinion ofthe Executive Dean of the Faculty con-cerned, is a similar unit; or

(c) where that unit is a 100-level unit and isdesignated by the Executive Dean of theFaculty concerned as an elementary orbridging unit, if the candidate has success-fully completed, at any university or othertertiary institution or at Year 12 standard ina secondary school, a unit which, in theopinion of the Executive Dean of theFaculty concerned, is a similar unit.

(3) If two or more units are designated in theSchedule of Units of Study as not to count for cred-it with each other, a student may include no morethan one of these units in a program of study.

University Medal19. The Academic Senate, on the recommendationof the designated Executive Dean of the Facultyconcerned, may award a University Medal to acandidate who has obtained an honours degree ofbachelor, or a degree of bachelor with honours, withHonours Class I and has shown exceptionalacademic achievement.

Saving Clause20. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost) may, inextreme and unusual circumstances and on therecommendation of the designated Executive Deanof the Faculty concerned, determine that anendorsement of W be recorded for a unit undercircumstances other than those specified in Rule 12.

21. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary hereincontained, the Academic Senate may, in anyexceptional case in which it may deem itappropriate to do so, dispense with or suspend anyrequirements of or prescription by these rules. Anysuch action by the Academic Senate is to be reportedforthwith to the Council.

Deeming Provision22. The Academic Senate may recommend theconferring of a degree of the University upon anyperson who has completed a course of studies inanother tertiary institution which the AcademicSenate, on the recommendation of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost), may from time to time deemto be the equivalent of a degree of this University.

23. The Coursework Studies Committee may declarethat a candidate has completed the specifiedprescribed unit where other work completed by thecandidate is deemed by the designated ExecutiveDean of Faculty to be equivalent to the prescribedunit.

Application of Rules24. (1) These Rules shall apply from 1 January 2001to new students enrolling for the first time in 2001and subsequent years.

(2) Candidates who were enrolled prior to 1January 2001 must satisfy the Bachelor DegreeRules as set out in the Handbook of UndergraduateStudies 2001 unless the Academic Senate hasapproved a transfer of candidature to the Ruleswhich apply from 1 January 2001.

(3) Unless the Academic Senate determines oth-erwise, those candidates who have not met therequirements for the award of their degree by31 December 2005 must meet the requirements of aProgram of Study as set out in these Rules.

(3) Any approval, recommendation, decision orother determination authorised in any of these rulesto be given or made by an Executive Dean of aFaculty may be given or made by a member of theacademic staff who has been duly delegated by thatdesignated Executive Dean of Faculty to give ormake approvals, recommendations, decisions ordeterminations for the purposes of that rule.

GENERAL PROVISIONS

Admission to Candidature2. (1) To be admitted to candidature for a courseleading to a graduate diploma, an applicant –

(a) (i) shall have qualified for admission to adegree of Bachelor of this University or toan honours degree of Bachelor of thisUniversity and have achieved a level ofattainment in an appropriate area of studyor areas of study considered by theCoursework Studies Committee, on therecommendation of the designatedExecutive Dean of Faculty, to be accept-able for admission to the graduate diploma;or

(ii) shall hold, from another university or othertertiary institution, qualifications approvedby the Coursework Studies Committee, onthe recommendation of the ExecutiveDean of the Faculty in which the course isoffered, as equivalent to the requirementsset out in paragraph (i) of this clause; and

(b) in respect of such courses as are determinedby the Coursework Studies Committee, onthe recommendation of the designatedExecutive Dean of the Faculty in which thecourse is offered, shall have such addition-al qualifications and experience as may beconsidered by the Coursework StudiesCommittee to be adequate preparation foradmission to candidature.

(2) Notwithstanding the provisions of this Rule,the designated Executive Dean of the Faculty inwhich the applicant seeks to register may require anapplicant to demonstrate fitness for admission as acandidate by carrying out such work and/or sittingfor such examinations as the Executive Dean ofFaculty may determine.

(3) In exceptional cases an applicant may beadmitted as a candidate for a specific graduatediploma if the applicant submits other evidence ofacademic and/or professional attainments and theadmission is approved by the Coursework StudiesCommittee on the recommendation of the ExecutiveDean of the Faculty in which the candidate may beregistered.

Courses and Units of Study3. (1) The course leading to the award of one of thegraduate diplomas specified in Rule 1 shall beapproved by the Academic Senate on therecommendation of the Academic ProgramCommittee.

(2) The course shall consist of a number of unitsof study, some of which may be prescribed and someoptional. The credit points for the units of studymust total at least 23.

(3) The course shall normally consist of units ofstudy in the Schedule of Units of Study specified inthe Bachelor Degree Rules but the Academic Senatemay approve of the inclusion of other units of studyon the recommendation of the relevant ExecutiveDean of Faculty. For each other unit of study thereshall be specified the number of credit points, thelevel, the duration and the conditions for enrolment.

Program of Studies4. (1) A candidate shall enrol for an award or agraduate diploma referred to in Rule 1(1) and shallbe registered for an award referred to in Rule 1(1) inthe Faculty of the University determined by theDeputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost).

(2) In these rules, unless otherwise stated orimplied, a designated Executive Dean of Facultymeans the Executive Dean of the Faculty which theDeputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost) has determinedpursuant to Rule 4(1).

(3) A candidate shall be designated as a full-timestudent if the candidate enrols in any year for suchunits as would, if satisfactorily completed, result inthe candidate obtaining not less than 17 creditpoints; otherwise the candidate shall be designatedas a part-time student.

(4) The program of studies which a candidate fora specific graduate diploma must complete satisfac-torily shall consist of units selected from thoseapproved by the Academic Senate as comprisingthat graduate diploma and shall be subject to theapproval of the designated Executive Dean ofFaculty. Such units may not have been counted forcredit for any other award under these rules or theBachelor Degree Rules.

(5) Where a candidate has completed successful-ly one or more prescribed units for a specific gradu-ate diploma or has, in the opinion of the designatedExecutive Dean of Faculty, completed a similar unitin another tertiary institution, the Executive Dean ofFaculty may deem the candidate to have completedthe prescribed unit or units.

(6) A candidate who wishes to add an internalunit may do so only in the first two weeks of thestudy period. A candidate who wishes to add anexternal unit may do so only in the first week of thestudy period. No approval is required to add a unitwithin these time periods.

Completion of Units5. The determination whether a candidate hascompleted satisfactorily a unit forming part of theprogram of study shall be made in accordance withRules 7, 8, 9 and 11 of the Bachelor Degree Rules.

Grades6. (1) A candidate’s grade for a unit offered byMacquarie University is determined upon anassessment of performance in required courseworkand/or examinations.

(2) The grade of a candidate shall be recorded inaccordance with Bachelor Degree Rule 10.

Discontinuance7. Where a candidate discontinues one or more unitsin the program of studies such discontinuance shallbe determined in accordance with Bachelor DegreeRule 12.

Exclusion from Enrolment8. A candidate who has twice had a grade recordedfor a unit pursuant to Rule 6 may not enrol again inthat unit, save with the permission of the ExecutiveDean of Faculty offering the unit; provided that acandidate not permitted to enrol again may appeal tothe Academic Appeals Committee which maydetermine the matter as it thinks fit.

9. (1) A candidate who is taking an unduly longtime to complete the program of studies for aspecific graduate diploma shall be excluded fromfurther enrolment in that graduate diploma.

(2) For the purpose of this Rule, a candidate willbe deemed to be taking an unduly long time to com-plete a program of study if the candidate has beenenrolled for the graduate diploma for more than 4equivalent part-time years aggregated by countingeach year of full-time candidature as equivalent totwo part-time years.

(3) A candidate excluded pursuant to Rule 9(1)or 9(7) may appeal to the Academic AppealsCommittee. The appeal shall be submitted in writingno later than the date specified by the AcademicRegistrar, provided that the Committee may consid-er an appeal submitted after the specified date if theCommittee is satisfied with the candidate’s explana-tion for the late submission. The Academic AppealsCommittee may dismiss the appeal, determine thatthe candidate may apply for permission to re-enrolafter the expiration of one calendar year, or permitthe candidate to re-enrol, and may impose condi-tions upon such re-enrolment.

(4) A candidate who, following an appeal pur-suant to Rule 9(3), is not permitted to re-enrol bythe Academic Appeals Committee may appeal to theAcademic Appeals Committee. The appeal shall besubmitted in writing to the Academic Registrar nolater than the date specified by the AcademicRegistrar, provided that the Academic AppealsCommittee may consider an appeal submitted afterthe specified date if the Committee is satisfied withthe candidate’s explanation for the late submission.The Academic Appeals Committee may dismiss theappeal, determine that the candidate may apply forpermission to re-enrol for that award after the expi-ration of one calendar year, or permit the candidateto re-enrol for that award, and may impose condi-tions upon such re-enrolment.

(5) A candidate excluded pursuant to Rule 9(1)may apply for permission to re-enrol after the expi-ration of two calendar years following such exclu-sion, or after the expiration of one calendar year ifso determined by the Academic Appeals Committeepursuant to Rule 9(3) or by the Academic AppealsCommittee pursuant to Rule 9(4). Any applicationfor permission to re-enrol after the expiration of theperiod of exclusion shall be determined by the

Ranking Committee in terms of any guidelines spec-ified by the Coursework Studies Committee.

(6) Any applicant who is refused permission toenrol again pursuant to Rule 9(5) may appeal to theAcademic Appeals Committee which may determinethe matter as it thinks fit.

(7) A student who commenced candidature after1 January 2000 for the Graduate Diploma inEducation or the Graduate Diploma in EarlyChildhood, and who has failed to complete a unit(these units are listed in the schedule of prescribedpracticum units for the diplomas listed above)offered by the Faculty of Human Sciences, afterhaving been enrolled therein twice, because of fail-ure in the practicum component of that unit isexcluded from the Graduate Diploma in Education,the Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood and thedegrees listed in Bachelor Degree Rule 14(2).

REQUIREMENTS FOR AWARDS

The Graduate Diploma in

Anthropology10. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma inAnthropology a candidate must obtain an aggregateof at least 23 credit points in anthropology unitswith the code ANTH.

The Graduate Diploma in Atmospheric

Science11. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma inAtmospheric Science a candidate must obtain anaggregate of at least 24 credit points including notless than 21 credit points at 200 level or above inunits in Earth Sciences with the code GEOS ofwhich not less than 12 credit points must be at 300level or above and including such units as may havebeen prescribed by the Academic Senate on therecommendation of the designated Executive Deanof Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Chinese*12. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Chinesea candidate must obtain an aggregate of at least 23credit points in Chinese units with the code CHN,including at least 12 credit points at 300 level orabove, and such units as have been prescribed by theAcademic Senate on the recommendation of thedesignated Executive Dean of Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Croatian*13. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Croatiana candidate must obtain an aggregate of at least 23credit points in Croatian units with the code CROincluding such units as have been prescribed by theAcademic Senate on the recommendation of thedesignated Executive Dean of Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Early

Childhood14. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in EarlyChildhood a candidate must obtain an aggregate ofat least 23 credit points in units with the code ECHor ECHP including such units as have beenprescribed for any one of the specialisationsapproved by the Academic Senate on therecommendation of the designated Executive Deanof Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Education15. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma inEducation a candidate must obtain an aggregate ofat least 24 credit points in units which are providedby the Department of Education, including:

� not less than 12 credit points in units in teacher edu-cation with the code TEP;

� not less than 6 credit points at 200 level or above inunits in education with the code EDUC; and

� such units as have been prescribed by the AcademicSenate on the recommendation of the designatedExecutive Dean of Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in French*16. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in French acandidate must obtain an aggregate of at least 23credit points in French units with the code FRNincluding not less than 12 credit points at 300 levelor above and such units as have been prescribed bythe Academic Senate on the recommendation of thedesignated Executive Dean of Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Gender

Studies*17. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in GenderStudies a candidate must obtain an aggregate of atleast 23 credit points, including at least 11 creditpoints in units with the code WST and 12 creditpoints at 300 level or above, including such units ashave been prescribed by the Academic Senate on therecommendation of the designated Executive Deanof Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Geographic

Information Science18. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma inGeographic Information Science a candidate mustobtain an aggregate of at least 24 credit points inunits with the code GEOS or with the code COMPor with the code ISYS, of which at least 18 creditpoints must be at 200 level or above including suchunits as may be prescribed by the Academic Senateon the recommendation of the designated ExecutiveDean of Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Macedonian*22. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma inMacedonian a candidate must obtain an aggregate ofat least 23 credit points in Macedonian units withthe code MCD including such units as have beenprescribed by the Academic Senate on therecommendation of the designated Executive Deanof Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Modern

Greek*23. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in ModernGreek a candidate must obtain an aggregate of atleast 24 credit points in Modern Greek units withthe code MGK including not less than 12 creditpoints at 300 level or above and such units as havebeen prescribed by the Academic Senate on therecommendation of the designated Executive Deanof Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Philosophy24. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma inPhilosophy a candidate must obtain an aggregate ofat least 24 credit points at 200 level or above inPhilosophy units with the code PHIL including notless than 12 credit points at 300 level.

The Graduate Diploma in Psychology25. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma inPsychology a candidate must obtain an aggregate ofat least 28 credit points at 200 level or above inPsychology units with the code PSY including notless than 12 credit points at 300 level and such unitsas have been prescribed by the Academic Senate on

the recommendation of the designated ExecutiveDean of Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Russian*26. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Russiana candidate must obtain an aggregate of at least 23credit points in Russian units with the code RSNincluding such units as have been prescribed by theAcademic Senate on the recommendation of thedesignated Executive Dean of Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Serbian*27. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Serbiana candidate must obtain an aggregate of at least 23credit points including not less than 20 credit pointsin Serbian units with the code SRB and such units ashave been prescribed by the Academic Senate on therecommendation of the designated Executive Deanof Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Ukrainian* 28. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma inUkrainian a candidate must obtain an aggregate ofat least 23 credit points including not less than 16credit points in Ukrainian units with the code UKRand such units as have been prescribed by theAcademic Senate on the recommendation of thedesignated Executive Dean of Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Women’s

Studies29. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Women’sStudies a candidate must obtain an aggregate of atleast 23 credit points, including at least 11 creditpoints in units with the code WST and 12 creditpoints at 300 level or above, including such units ashave been prescribed by Academic Senate on therecommendation of the designated Executive Deanof Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Information

Technology30. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma inInformation Technology a candidate must obtain anaggregate of at least 32 credit points in InformationTechnology units with a code of ITEC includingsuch units as have been prescribed by the AcademicSenate on the recommendation of the designatedExecutive Dean of Faculty.

The Graduate Diploma in Critical and

Cultural Studies 31. To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Criticaland Cultural Studies a candidate must obtain anaggregate of at least 24 credit points in units with acode of CUL including such units as have beenprescribed by the Academic Senate on therecommendation of the designated Executive Deanof Faculty.

Saving Clause32. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary hereincontained, the Academic Senate may, in anyexceptional case in which it may deem itappropriate to do so, dispense with or suspend anyrequirement of or prescription by these rules. Anysuch action by the Academic Senate is to be reportedforthwith to the Council.

Diploma Rules1. (1) There shall be the following Diplomas;

the Diploma in Languages (DipLang),

the Diploma in Ancient Languages (DipAncLang)

(2) A candidate for the Diploma shall complete aprogram of 24 credit points in units of studyapproved by the Academic Senate.

(3) The Council may award the Diploma to acandidate who has met the requirements of theserules to the satisfaction of the Academic Senate.

(4) Any approval authorised by any of theseRules to be given by the Executive Dean of theFaculty of Arts may be given by a member of theacademic staff who has been duly delegated by thatExecutive Dean of Faculty to give approval for thepurpose of that rule.

2. (1) In these Rules, unless otherwise stated orimplied, a designated Executive Dean of Facultymeans the Executive Dean of the Faculty which theDeputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost) has determinedpursuant to Bachelor Degree Rule 2 (2).

(2) A candidate shall be enrolled for an awardreferred to in Rule 1 (1) and shall be registered in aFaculty of the University as determined by theDeputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost).

(a) Where a candidate is enrolled in nine ormore credit points in a study period, thecandidate shall be designated as a full-timestudent;

(b) Where a candidate is enrolled in less thannine credit points in a study period, thecandidate shall be designated as a part-timestudent;

(c) Where a candidate’s total enrolment is inunits which are classified external, the can-didate shall be designated as an externalstudent.

3. To be admitted to candidature for the Diploma,an applicant -

(1) shall be admitted to candidature for acourse leading to a degree at thisUniversity; or.

(2) shall have qualified for admission to adegree at the University, or

(3) shall hold, from another university or othertertiary institution, qualifications approvedby the Coursework Studies Committee asequivalent to the requirements set out inparagraph (2) of this clause.

4. (1) The Academic Senate shall approve andprescribe units of study within an approved programof study on the recommendation of the ExecutiveDean of the Faculty of Arts.

(2) A candidate who wishes to add an internalunit may do so only in the first two weeks of thestudy period. A candidate who wishes to add anexternal unit may do so only in the first week of thestudy period. No approval is required to add a unitwithin these time periods.

5. (1) The determination whether a candidate hascompleted satisfactorily a unit forming part of theprogram of study shall be made in accordance withRules 7, 8, 9 and 11 of the Bachelor Degree Rules.

(2) Where the candidate has completed satisfac-torily one or more units prescribed for this Diploma,or has, in the opinion of the designated ExecutiveDean of Faculty, completed a similar unit or units inanother tertiary institution, and where the unit orunits do not form part of a completed award, thecandidate may be granted credit therefore as deter-mined by the Coursework Studies Committee on therecommendation of the Executive Dean of Faculty.The credit granted shall be for not more than one-half of the total program of studies for the Diploma.

(3) Completed Diploma is not eligible for creditfor previous studies under the provisions ofBachelor Degree Rule 17

6. Repealed7. (1) A candidate’s grade for a unit offered byMacquarie University is determined upon anassessment of performance in required courseworkand/or examinations.

(2) A grade of a candidate shall be recorded inaccordance with Bachelor Degree Rule 9.

8. Where a candidate discontinues one or moreunits in the program of studies such discontinuanceshall be determined in accordance with BachelorDegree Rule 12.

9. Subject to these rules a candidate whose recordin a unit has been endorsed with the letter “W” orthe letter “F” may re-enrol in that unit except that acandidate who has twice had the grade “F” recordedfor a unit may not enrol again in that unit, save withthe permission of the Executive Dean of the Facultyof Arts; provided that a candidate not permitted toenrol again in a unit may appeal to the AcademicAppeals Committee which may determine the matteras it thinks fit. A candidate re-enrolling shall notreceive credit for any work previously performed inthat unit.

10. A candidate who is taking an unduly long time tocomplete the Diploma may be excluded from furtherenrolment in any units. For the purpose of this Rule,an unduly long time will be regarded as 4 years ofeffective enrolment.

11. (1) A candidate who is excluded pursuant toRule 10 may appeal to the Academic Senate. Theappeal is to be submitted in writing to the AcademicRegistrar no later than the date specified by theAcademic Registrar.

(2) The Academic Senate shall establish theAcademic Appeals Committee, which may dismiss

the appeal, determine that the candidate may applyfor permission to re-enrol after the expiration of onecalendar year, or permit the candidate to re-enrol,and may impose conditions upon such re-enrolment.

(3) A candidate excluded pursuant to Rule 10may apply to re-enrol after the expiration of twocalendar years following such exclusion, or after theexpiration of one calendar year if so determinedpursuant to Rule 11(2). Any application for permis-sion to re-enrol after the expiration period of exclu-sion shall be determined by Academic Senate. Anyapplicant who is refused permission to enrol againpursuant to Rule 11 may appeal to the AcademicAppeals Committee which may determines the mat-ter as it thinks fit.

12. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary hereincontained, the Academic Senate may, in any case inwhich it may deem it appropriate to do so, dispensewith or suspend any requirements of or prescriptionof these rules. Any such action by the AcademicSenate shall in every instance be reported forthwithto the Council.

Certificate Rules1. (1) There shall be the following Certificates;

the Certificate in Languages (CertLang)the Certificate in Ancient Languages (CertAnc

Lang)(2) A candidate for the Certificate shall com-

plete a program of 12 credit points in units of studyapproved by the Academic Senate.

(3) The Council may award the Certificate to acandidate who has met the requirements of theserules to the satisfaction of the Academic Senate.

(4) Any approval authorised by any of theserules to be given by the Executive Dean of theFaculty of Arts may be given by a member of theacademic staff who has been duly delegated by thatExecutive Dean of Faculty to give approval for thepurpose of that rule.

Graduate CertificateRules1. (1) There shall be the following graduatecertificates:

Graduate Certificate in Information Technology(GradCertIT);

Graduate Certificate in Introductory JapaneseTeaching (GradCertIntroJpnTeaching);

Graduate Certificate in Japanese Corporate Training(GradCertJpnCorpTraining);

Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology(GradCertBiotech);

Graduate Certificate in Critical and Cultural Studies(GradCertCritCul);

Graduate Certificate in Statistics (GradCertStats);

Graduate Certificate in Business (GradCertBus);

Graduate Certificate in Marketing (GradCertMktg);

Graduate Certificate in Information Systems andTechnology (GradCertInfSysTech).

(2) Any one of the graduate certificates referredto in Rule 1(1) may be awarded by the Council to acandidate who has to the satisfaction of theAcademic Senate complied with the requirements ofthese Rules.

(3) Any approval, recommendation, approval orother determination, authorised in any of theseRules to be given or made by a Executive Dean ofFaculty, may be given or made by a member of theacademic staff who has been duly delegated by thatExecutive Dean of Faculty to give or makeapprovals, recommendations, decisions or determi-nations for the purposes of that Rule.

GENERAL PROVISIONS

Admission to Candidature2. (1) To be admitted to candidature for a courseleading to a graduate certificate, an applicant –

(a) (i) shall have qualified for admission to adegree of Bachelor of this University or toan honours degree of Bachelor of thisUniversity and have achieved a level ofattainment in an appropriate area of studyor areas of study considered by theAcademic Senate, on the recommendationof the designated Executive Dean ofFaculty, to be acceptable for admission tothe graduate certificate; or

(ii) shall hold, from another university or othertertiary institution, qualifications approvedby the Academic Senate, on the recommen-dation of the designated Executive Dean ofFaculty, to be acceptable for admission tothe graduate certificate; or

(iii) shall hold, from another university or othertertiary institution, qualifications approvedby the Academic Senate, on the recommen-dation of the Executive Dean of Faculty inwhich the course is offered, as equivalent tothe requirements set out in paragraph (i) ofthis clause; and

(b) in respect of such courses as are determinedby the Coursework Studies Committee, onthe recommendation of the Executive Deanof Faculty in which the course is offered,shall have such additional qualificationsand experience as may be considered by theCoursework Studies Committee to be ade-quate preparation for admission to candida-ture.

(2) Notwithstanding the provisions of this Rule,the Executive Dean of Faculty in which the appli-cant seeks to register may require an applicant todemonstrate fitness for admission as a candidate bycarrying out such work and/or sitting for such exam-inations as the Executive Dean of Faculty maydetermine.

(3) In exceptional cases an applicant may beadmitted as a candidate for a specific graduate cer-tificate if the applicant submit other evidence ofacademic and/or professional attainments and theadmission is approved by the Executive Dean ofFaculty in which the candidate may be registered.

Courses and Units of Study3. (1) The courses leading to the award of one ofthe graduate certificates specified in Rule 1 shall beapproved by the Academic Senate.

(2) The course shall consist of a number of unitsof study, some of which may be prescribed and someoptional. The credit points for the course must totalat least 12.

(3) The course shall normally consist of units ofstudy in the Schedule of Units of Study specified inthe Bachelor Degree Rules but the Academic Senatemay approve of the inclusion of other units of studyon the recommendation of the relevant ExecutiveDean of Faculty. For each other unit of study thereshall be specified the number of credit points, thelevel, the duration and the conditions for enrolment.

Program of Studies4. (1) A candidate shall enrol for a graduatecertificate referred to in Rule 1(1) and shall beregistered for the award in the Faculty of theUniversity determined by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost).

(2) In these rules, unless otherwise stated orimplied, a designated Executive Dean of Facultymeans the Executive Dean of the Faculty in whichthe Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost) has deter-mined pursuant to Rule 4(1).

(3) A candidate shall be designated as a part-time student if the candidate enrols in any year forsuch units as would, if satisfactorily completed,result in the candidate obtaining not more than 12credit points.

(4) The program of studies which a candidate fora specific graduate certificate must complete satis-factorily shall consist of units selected from thoseapproved by the Academic Senate as comprisingthat graduate certificate and shall be subject to theapproval of the designated Executive Dean ofFaculty. Such units may not include those countedfor credit for any other award under these Rules orthe Bachelor Degree Rules.

(5) Where a candidate has completed successful-ly one or more prescribed units for a specific gradu-ate certificate or has, in the opinion of the designat-ed Executive Dean of Faculty, completed a similarunit in another tertiary institution, the ExecutiveDean of Faculty may deem the candidate to havecompleted the prescribed unit or units.

(6) A candidate who wishes to add an internalunit may do so only in the first two weeks of thestudy period. A candidate who wishes to add anexternal unit may do so only in the first week of thestudy period. No approval is required to add a unitwithin these time periods.

Completion of Units5. The determination whether a candidate hascompleted a unit forming part of the program ofstudy shall be made in accordance with Rules 7, 8, 9and 11 of the Bachelor Degree Rules.

Grades6. (1) A candidate’s grade for a unit offered by theUniversity is determined upon an assessment ofperformance in required coursework and/orexaminations.

(2) The grade of a candidate shall be recorded inaccordance with Bachelor Degree Rule 10.

Discontinuance7. Where a candidate discontinues one or moreunits in the program of studies such discontinuanceshall be determined in accordance with BachelorDegree Rule 12.

Exclusion from Enrolment8. A candidate who has twice had a grade recordedfor a unit pursuant to Rule 6 may not enrol again inthat unit, save with the permission of the ExecutiveDean of Faculty offering the unit; provided that acandidate not permitted to enrol again may appeal tothe Academic Appeals Committee which maydetermine the matter as it thinks fit.

Saving Clause9. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary hereincontained, the Academic Senate may, in anyexceptional case in which it may deem itappropriate to do so, dispense with or suspend anyrequirement of or prescription by these rules. Anysuch action by the Academic Senate is to be reportedforthwith to the Council.
