WelcomeAt Roehampton, we are committed to providing excellent teaching. We support all of our students, whatever their background, to reach their full potential, through our diverse and dynamic range of courses, delivered by academic staff engaged in world-class research.

We pride ourselves on the guarantee we make to all of our students: high levels of contact time with excellent teachers working at the cutting edge of their subject areas.

As an undergraduate, you will join a cosmopolitan and friendly institution, comprised of four colleges, which help to foster a strong sense of community.

There’s no disputing how much a university education can enrich your life. It’s not just about getting a great degree, but also broadening your experiences, preparing yourself for the world of work, and having a fantastic time while you are here.

We hope you can join us.

Professor Paul O’Prey, Vice-Chancellor

Why Roehampton?Inspiring teaching Our teachers lead the way in their fields; they influence policy, shape opinions and publish in leading academic journals. They are called upon to be commentators in the media, and shape policy as advisers to government, charities and industry. Unlike many other universities, all of our students are taught by research-active academic staff from their first year of study. Our size means that you’ll get to know your lecturers and fellow students, giving you a more personal learning experience.

Preparing you for work Career skills are central to every one of our academic courses, so no matter what you study, we will help you develop the skills needed for today’s job market.

We have a thriving Career Mentoring Scheme, through which we can match you with a Roehampton alumnus or friend of the University to help you to succeed. We also give you access to CV writing support, interactive support for interviews and a wide-ranging calendar of careers events.

We know it works, as the latest national figures show that nine out of 10 of our graduates are in employment or further study within six months of graduation – one of the best rates in London (Destination of Leavers of Higher Education Survey, 2015 results).

A supportive environmentWhen you join Roehampton you become part of one of our 10 highly-regarded academic departments and a member of a forward-thinking community on campus. You’ll also join one of our four colleges, with all the support and social life that they provide.

There is a librarian assigned to each department area to help you find all the relevant text books and sources you need to excel in your studies. We also offer a range of services for any non-academic issues you may have, such as managing finances or arranging disability or dyslexia support.

The chance to study abroadYou will have an exciting opportunity to spend a semester of your second year abroad, with 42 countries worldwide to choose from. Our partnerships with universities across the globe give you the chance to experience new and exciting cultures, and expand your knowledge in campuses across the world.

Some of the countries where you can study include Australia, Ecuador, France, Mexico, Spain and the United States.

Many students tell us their time spent abroad was one of the best parts of their degree. You will return home more confident, adaptable, globally minded, and more attractive to any potential employer.

Our industry connectionsWe have established strong links with employers across a range of sectors, giving you the chance to undertake work placements or take part in masterclasses on campus.

Every department has strong connections to industries in their sector, so you can learn through practice and from those who are experts in their fields.

Through a partnership with Santander, we offer an internship programme for our final year students and recent graduates, where you can take part in a three-month paid work placement within a business. We also offer other work placement opportunities across our courses.

The best of both worlds Although our beautiful campus provides a close-knit community feel, we have modern, cutting edge facilities and a vibrant social scene. Best of all, we are in the heart of south-west London, close to Putney and Hammersmith and within easy reach of central London. Studying with us will give you the best of both worlds: the community feel of a traditional university campus, with the culture and nightlife of one of the greatest cities in the world.

World class research Research is vital as it ensures that your teaching is based on the very latest knowledge. Roehampton has an excellent research profile, with some of the most highly-regarded academic departments in the UK. We are ranked as the most research-intensive modern university in the country (Research Excellence Framework 2014). As a student, you’ll benefit from studying with staff who are working at the very highest level.

Discover your talents and interestsAcademic excellence is one of the main reasons to choose Roehampton, but there are also many extra-curricular activities to help you develop your skills. In terms of sport, we offer everything from badminton to yoga and athletics to roller sports, so you will have lots of opportunities to get active.

Roehampton Students’ Union (RSU) also gives you the chance to broaden your experiences, with over 60 societies including The Rainforest Society, Debating Society, Film Society, Fashion Society and more. Whether you want to help run a group or work in the RSU’s own TV or radio station, you can have fun while gaining new skills that employers value.

A vibrant student community We have 10,000 students studying with us, a quarter of whom are postgraduates. Thousands more study with us through Roehampton Online. You’ll find a cosmopolitan atmosphere on campus, with more than 140 different nationalities represented, reflecting the growing international reputation of the University.

Our campus environment creates a strong community feel, encouraging students to work in groups and inspiring creativity.

One example of that creativity is our award-winning Hive Café in the centre of Digby Square. It is part of the Growhampton sustainability project led by the students’ union.

Constructed and refurbished from recycled and upcycled materials, it serves food and drink from local, ethical sources, and food grown on campus by our students.

Giving you a voiceStudents are at the heart of everything we do at Roehampton. That’s why we work in partnership with you, encouraging you to have a say in determining the direction of the University. Our Student Partnership scheme gives you the chance to influence all levels of decision making across the University.

Our Student Charter is just one example of how we work together with students to create an inspiring place to study. The charter was developed by the University and Roehampton Students’ Union and describes how we can all contribute to create a vibrant campus.

A lifelong partnership Once you graduate from Roehampton, you’ll leave with an excellent degree and wonderful memories. However, that won’t be the end of our relationship with you. Our vibrant alumni community ensures that we will be with you throughout your career, helping you to build the networks you need to succeed.

We are very proud of our diverse and multicultural student body. International students make up a substantial portion of the population on campus, and this is reflected in the various culture-based clubs and societies at the Students’ Union.

Support for international students at Roehampton is second to none, and starts before you even get to campus with our pre-arrival activities, dedicated contact support and airport pick up service.

Language support International students who don’t speak English as their native language are offered free English language support tutoring if required, this can be accessed through the Information Centre on campus.

The English Language Unit offers more options for support to prepare you for your degree and support you during your studies with opportunities for individual tutorials.

What will I study?– Essays: using reading in your writing,

organisation, critical and analytical skills

– Academic vocabulary and grammar development

– Seminars: presentation and discussion based on your reading

– Lectures: understanding the argument, note-taking, playing an active role

– Listening and reading: understanding key ideas in an academic context

International Foundation ProgrammeInternational students who are not eligible for direct entry to an undergraduate programme, or who want to improve their academic English, study skills and subject knowledge before beginning an undergraduate degree, can take one of our International Foundation Programmes. The International Foundation Programme is offered in conjunction with our partners QA Higher Education. There are two pathways, one if you are looking at progressing onto a business degree, and a generic pathway for non-business degrees. Both courses are designed to prepare you for the seamless transition onto an undergraduate programme.

“ I am getting a good education and competing internationally. ”

Yathreb is an international student from Egypt. Alongside her Business Management degree, she is currently ranked 27th in the world for squash. This is her Roehampton Story.

I didn’t want to choose between getting a good education and competing internationally at the sport I love, so when I discovered Roehampton had a squash development programme, I applied straightaway.

It’s a lot to juggle at times and I’ve definitely had to polish my time management skills. I have a great support team with my coach and tutors, who’ve been helping me balance essays, lectures, training and competitions.

I’m getting to study an interesting subject on a great campus with friendly people, all whilst climbing 43 places in my rankings. The icing on the cake has been representing Roehampton at the British University and Colleges Sport championship and bringing home the gold medal.

“ Now I have the confidence to reach my full potential.”

George, who studies Film and Drama, acts, directs, writes and is a Roehampton Student Ambassador.

When I arrived at Roehampton I was quite shy and lacking in confidence, but in the year I’ve been here, I’ve really come out of my shell.

Having inspiring lecturers has really helped as they encourage me to believe I can achieve anything I want, plus they’ve given me the platform to develop as a performer. I’m now really throwing myself into University life; I’m part of a drama group, I’m on the rugby team and I’ve joined the Christian Union. I work part time as a Roehampton Student Ambassador, plus I’ve also got into bodybuilding with my flat mate.

I’ve noticed the change in myself and so have my friends and family. Something I never thought I’d be doing a year ago is studying abroad, but in January I’m off to America for a semester and cannot wait. Now I know what I’m capable of, I’m grabbing every opportunity with both hands.

“ I know we will be best friends forever.”

Nikhil came to Roehampton like most students – not knowing anyone but hoping to meet great people to share his experience. These hopes were realised when he met Daniel, Kelly and Susana in his first week.

Everybody wants to make good friends at university, but Daniel, Kelly and Susana are people I know will be my best friends forever.

We spend a lot of time together. Studying the same course as Kelly and Susana means we’re often in the library together; it’s great to have people to discuss ideas with and explain something you aren’t quite sure about. Our hard work is paying off as we all got firsts in our exams. It’s not all work and no play though; there’s nights out, nights in and we take it in turns to cook dinner.

When you’re away from home, it’s your friends who are your support system; Daniel’s a good listener and he gives great advice, Kelly always cheers me up and Susana’s the one I go to in a crisis. We’re a dream team really, there’s already talk of embarrassing best man and bridesmaid speeches at each other’s weddings.

What you can expectOur Freshers’ Fair has been voted the best in London and the second best in the UK.* During Welcome Week last year we hired out Thorpe Park exclusively for our students. You can be sure there’ll be plenty of stimulating and inspiring things to do when you arrive and all year round.

Across the campus there are cafes, bars, diners and other spaces where you can socialise, build friendships and work together.

Every week there are nights out on campus, such as Bands Night or Acoustic Night, so if you have a musical talent there’s a chance for you to take it further.

There are also plenty of events throughout the academic year, including the Summer Ball, where recent acts have included The Maccabees, Eliza Doolittle, Example and The Streets. The RSU also organises club nights off campus, including a monthly night out at Clapham Grand, the biggest nightclub in south west London, exclusively for Roehampton students.

Most students applying for undergraduate study will do so via UCAS (www.ucas.com).

You can apply for up to five courses at UK higher education institutions using the UCAS service. Please note that UCAS do charge a fee for submitting an application using this route. Once we receive your application from UCAS, we aim to make a decision on it within a few days.

Once you have heard back from all the institutions you have applied to, you need to decide which application will be your ‘firm’ choice (first choice) and your ‘insurance’ choice (second choice). During the time it takes for you to make your decision, we will contact you by email, phone and occasionally by post with more information about studying with us.

You may submit late applications up until 30 June 2016; however, please be aware that if courses become full, we may not be able to make offers on late applications. After 30 June you will only be able to make an application via the UCAS clearing service.

International students from outside of the EU have the option to apply using the application form on our website at any point in the year. There is no charge to make an application via this route.

On the day you can attend two different subject talks and chat to current students and teaching staff about your course interests. You can also tour our beautiful parkland campus, take a look at our range of on-campus accommodation and attend our Student Life fair with representatives from right across the University.

You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to chat to our current students who are on hand to answer any questions you may have and to tell you their perspective on student life and study at Roehampton. Supportive ethos with a focus on realising student potential

State-of-the-art facilities in a historic setting

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us – see our contact details on the back of this prospectus.

From September 2015 qualifications are being reformed across the UK at both level 2 (GCSE) and level 3 (A Level, BTEC, Access etc.). UCAS has developed a new way to calculate the tariff points associated with each qualification in line with this structural change. These changes are likely to affect students applying for entry to university in September 2017.

What the new points mean to you

Tariff points

High quality accommodation on campus

Strong focus on students’ career development through work placements and contacts with leading organisations and industry professionals

Safe environment with a 24/7 University Security Service

The opportunity to study abroad

Dedicated academic and non-academic support services

– All qualifications currently on the UCAS tariff will continue to attract points under the new system.

– The new tariff points are based on an approach which used the qualification’s size and grades to calculate its total tariff points.

– The numbers are much lower, for example an A level grade A* gets 56 points under the new tariff, in comparison with 140 under the current tariff.

– You’ll still need to achieve the same grades at A level, Scottish Advanced Higher, Scottish Higher or BTEC, or in any other qualification you’re taking to meet higher education course entry requirements.

– The new UCAS tariff points should not have any impact on your decisions about qualification choices at school or college, or your preparation or application to a higher education course.

– The AS is now 40% of an A level – this is more accurate according to qualification regulators.

– You may notice that unis and colleges are starting to refer to new UCAS tariff points from now on, because they know that younger learners start their higher education course research early.

– 2017 entry courses advertised on the UCAS search tool from May 2016 will refer to the new UCAS tariff points only.

Course indexContact us

This prospectus was accurate at the time of going to print. It is important therefore that you check the University website for updates as some information is subject to change.

The University will endeavour to deliver the course in accordance with the description applied to it in the University’s prospectus and on the website for the academic year in which you begin the course. However, the University will be entitled to make reasonable changes to the course, including to content or syllabus of the course where developments in the subject area make that necessary, or to the location, method of delivery or methods of assessment on the course. In making any such changes, the University will aim to make the minimum changes necessary and will notify and consult with affected students in advance about any changes that are required. If the University changes your course and you are not satisfied with the changes, you will be offered the opportunity to withdraw from the programme and, if required, reasonable support to transfer to another provider.

Further, circumstances beyond the University’s reasonable control may prevent it from delivering the courses as described. Examples of such circumstances could include unanticipated departure of key members of University staff or where numbers recruited to the course are such that it is not possible to deliver an appropriate quality of education for students. In these circumstances, the University will take all reasonable steps to minimise any resultant disruption, by, for example, offering those students the chance to move to another course or institution or by delivering a modified version of the same course, but to the full extent that is possible under the general law, the University excludes liability for any loss and/or damage suffered by any applicant or student as a result of those circumstances.
