What’s it like to study at Flinders?

For most students, studying at Flinders will involve a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, perhaps laboratory or practical classes, fieldwork or work placements, as well as time for individual study.

tutorials/seminarsTutorials are new to most people entering university. In tutorials, students and academic staff meet in small numbers in a somewhat informal setting so that topics raised in lectures can be discussed further and points can be clarified.

lecturesMost of our courses will include a series of lectures, each lasting about 50 minutes. These usually occur in a lecture theatre with the whole student group taught together. They can be given by various members of teaching staff, who are experts in the subjects being taught.

Work integrated learningPractical work is an important opportunity for some students to test the concepts and methods introduced in lectures and tutorials. You will usually work in a small team or in partnership with another student. Many courses offer work placements which give students experience in an industry, government or community setting.

group WorkYou may also be involved in group work in which you collaborate with other students on a project activity or in preparing for a presentation. This encourages you to take different roles and responsibilities, to share expertise and tackle tasks that you would not be able to undertake alone.

studying on your oWnYour independent reading, research and study, guided by lecturers and tutors, will enable you to prepare for topics in greater depth. This is especially important when you are undertaking an assignment, an essay, a seminar/tutorial/presentation or preparing for an exam.

CAMPUS LIFE

Flinders is everything a modern university should be – progressive and dynamic yet friendly and accessible. We offer a vibrant and stimulating environment in which to work or study and we have a long held reputation as the “student’s university”.

on campusThe campus environment is a great place to be. With places to eat and drink spread across the campus it’s the ideal space to catch up with friends to have a coffee and study and even log on to the University’s wireless network.

On campus we have a convenience store, wholefood shop, travel agent, post office,

bank, chemist, optometrist, hairdresser and the university bookshop. In April 2009 a new, purpose built fitness centre attached to the University’s Sports Centre, was opened.

At Flinders we are committed to student success and provide assistance through a range of support services. The Student Learning Centre provides study support and skills development to help you reach your highest potential. The Careers and Employer Liaison Centre offers careers advice, mentoring, skills development, and vacation and graduate employment. The library offers excellent facilities where you can work alone or in a group, use a computer or simply chill

out in comfort. There are more than a million books and periodicals readily available.

Students at Flinders have access to a comprehensive range of student support services including:

applying to FlindersUniversity is open to everyone. We have a variety of entry pathways available: Year 12 – SACE/NTCE (or interstate/international equivalent), International Baccalaureate, a Foundation Course, completed TAFE/VET qualification, a completed or partially completed University degree and the STAT (Special Tertiary Admissions Test). You may even be able to use a range of these pathways.

Flinders offers two admissions cycles for undergraduate courses each year:

• The January intake (Semester 1); applications open in August for commencement the following year. All courses are offered in this cycle.

• Mid year intake (Semester 2) applications open in mid May for commencement in July that year. Not all courses are offered mid year.

The SATAC University Guide is only published for the January intake and is available for purchase from late July each year from newsagencies and is free through schools for current year 12 students.

Flinders also has a range of access schemes for students who have studied science and mathematics subjects, Indigenous Australians, rural and isolated students and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Robotics is the science and technology of the design, development and application of robots in a wide range of fields. The degree combines electronics, computer control, signal processing, and programming in the design, development, and operation of robots, and their integration with other systems in the work environment. Students work directly with robots in industry as a robotics or systems engineer. All students undertake Flinders’ nationally recognised 20- week industry placement.

Nurses play an important role in health promotion, maintenance and education, as well as in traditional patient care and the restoration of health. getting to FlindersFlinders University’s main campus is located in Bedford Park, just a short drive south of the Central Business District of Adelaide.

By car or bike the most direct routes to Flinders are via Main South Road, Sturt Road, Marion Road, The Southern Expressway and Shepherds Hill Road. With over 20 car parks on campus there is never a shortage of available parking.

The Flinders campus is connected directly with bus services from the city, northern, southern and western suburbs. As well as several cycling tracks to and around the campus, the Tonsley train station is also close to the university.
