Undergraduate Enrollment Arizona State University shares with other colleges and universities a tradi- tion of service and academic excellence that is hundreds of years old. Its pur- pose is the exchange of knowledge and the pursuit of wisdom. The university also cooperates fully with law enforcement agencies to enforce all laws relating to alcohol and illegal substances. A substance abuse counselor is avail- able at Student Health for those stu- dents who are experiencing problems as a result of the use of alcohol or other substances and who wish to discuss the problems in a confidential setting. Substance abuse educational pro- grams are also available to students through Student Health. Students are encouraged to use the health education resource center at Student Health to ob- tain relevant information. The university has a strong interest in its students’ conduct. Students are expected, as part of their obligations of enrollment, to become familiar with the Student Code of Conduct, available at Student Life (SSV B228). Violations of the Student Code of Conduct, whether committed by individuals or groups, are subject to university disci- pline, as are violations of university regulations with regard to academic dishonesty. The ASU stu- dent may live in residence halls, with sororities or fraternities on campus, or in one of the many communities in the metropolitan Phoenix area. Each of the 50 states and more than 100 foreign countries have students enrolled at ASU. The university is organized into sev- eral distinct administrative areas. Stu- dent Affairs, one of these areas, is re- sponsible for the delivery of a variety of services and developmental pro- grams in support of students’ university needs and educational pursuits. The ASU stu-dent may live in residence halls, withsororities or fraternities on campus, orin one of the many communities in themetropolitan Phoenix area. Each of the50 states and more than 100 foreigncountries have students enrolled atASU.

The university is organized into sev-eral distinct administrative areas. Stu-dent Affairs, one of these areas, is re-sponsible for the delivery of a varietyof services and developmental pro-grams in support of students’ universityneeds and educational pursuits. students are on campus, they are en-couraged to explore the facilities, ser-vices, and human resources available.Campus agencies guiding students inthis learning process include CareerServices, Counseling and Consultation,Educational Development, the Memo-rial Union, Recreational Sports andStudent Activities, Student Develop-ment and Residential Life, StudentHealth, Student Life, and Student Pub-lications. Each of these areas providesspecialized learning opportunities thatcontribute to an environment that fos-ters both personal and academicgrowth.

The university’s commitment to stu-dents does not diminish as a studentnears graduation. By promoting careerexploration and placement services,students are accompanied through theirtransition from the university experi-ence to the professional lifestyles theyhave chosen to pursue.

The following fees apply to bothcredit and noncredit (audit) registra-tions and are subject to change. TheArizona Board of Regents reservesthe right to change fees and chargeswithout notice. The current semesterSchedule of Classes generally reflectsthe up-to-date fee amounts.

DEFINITIONS

Registration fee refers to the chargeassessed to all students who register forclasses at ASU. Tuition refers to addi-tional charges assessed to nonresidents,as established in Arizona Board of Re-gents’ Policy 4–102.

ACADEMIC YEARREGISTRATION FEE ANDNONRESIDENT TUITION

The registration fee and nonresidenttuition for fall 1993 and spring 1994 se-mesters are shown in the “1993–94Registration Fee and Nonresident Tu-ition” table. The amounts listed are peracademic semester. For information onin-state versus out-of-state residencyclassification see “Residency Classifi-cation Procedures and Policies,” pages28–29.

Students registered for seven or morehours are considered full-time for feepayment purposes. See “EnrollmentVerification Guidelines,” page 43.Note: The rate for one hour is chargedif the student is registered only for azero-hour class.

College of Law Fees. Beginning withthe fall 1993 semester, students admit-ted to the College of Law pay registra-tion fees and tuition at different ratesfrom other students. For 1993–94,rates for newly admitted full-time lawstudents were $500.00 more per semes-ter than the standard resident or non-resident rates. Students already admit-ted to the College of Law before thefall 1993 semester pay the standard reg-istration and tuition fees. See the“1993–94 Registration Fee and Non-resident Tuition” table or the currentSchedule of Classes for up-to-date feeamounts.

Summer Sessions Fees. The 1994registration fee per semester hour is$93.00 except for law students. Theregistration fee per semester hour forlaw students is $145.00. For more in-formation on the summer sessions, seepage 378 and the Summer Sessions Bul-letin.

Off-Campus andCorrespondence Courses

OTHER FEES, DEPOSITS, ANDCHARGES

Special Class Fees and Deposits.Certain university classes require pay-ment of fees or deposits for materials,breakage, and/or rentals. These feesand deposits are listed in the Scheduleof Classes for each semester.

Student Recreation Complex Fee.All students (except university employ-ees) who take at least one class at ASUMain must pay a mandatory StudentRecreation Complex fee. Full-time(seven or more hours) students arecharged $25.00 per semester. Part-timestudents pay $12.00 per semester, andsummer students pay $2.00 per semes-ter hour. See the current semesterSchedule of Classes for further infor-mation.

Financial Aid Trust Fee. All studentsmust pay a financial aid trust fee. Full-time (seven or more hours) students arecharged $8.00 per semester. Part-timestudents pay $4.00 per semester. Sum-mer students pay $4.00 per session.Fees collected from students are

Comprehensive Examination. Thisfee is paid by all students seeking to es-tablish credit by examination and is$7.50 per semester hour.

Parking Decals. A parking decal mustbe purchased for motor vehicles parkedon campus except in areas where me-tered parking (quarters only) or visitorlots are available. Annual decals rangefrom $45.00 to $105.00 for controlledaccess parking. Photo identification isrequired.

Each vehicle registered at ASU Park-ing and Transit Services must be andremain in compliance with State of Ari-zona emission standards (ARS § 15–1627G) during the entire registrationperiod. The fee for this emission in-spection is $5.85 per vehicle. For moredecal sales information, call 602/965–6124.

Everyone is encouraged to supporttravel reduction measures by usingmass transit, university shuttle bus,carpooling, bicycling, or walkingwhenever possible. See page 75 formore information.

Parking Violations. Due to high de-mand, parking regulations are strictlyenforced. Fines range from $10 to $50.Appeals to parking citations may befiled within 14 calendar days from theissuance date with the hearing appealsofficer and, after payment, may be fur-ther appealed to the Parking CitationAppeals Board. Unpaid parking cita-tions are delinquent financial obliga-tions subject to provisions of the sec-tion on Delinquent Financial Obliga-tions. Any person owing three or moreunpaid parking citations or $100.00 inunpaid parking citations is subject toimpoundment. A $50.00 minimum feeis assessed if immobilization is re-quired. If the vehicle is towed, an addi-tional charge is applied. For more in-formation, call 602/965–4527.

Returned Checks. Checks returned bya bank are assessed a $10.00 servicecharge with repayment needed withinfive business days of notification. Asecond $10.00 service charge is made ifthe returned check is not repaid withinthis five-day period. Repayment of areturned check must typically be incash.

The university may have arrange-ments with its bank to redeposit auto-matically for a second time checks forwhich there are insufficient funds. Noservice charge is assessed by ASU untila check is returned to ASU; however,the payer may be assessed a servicecharge by his or her financial institu-tion.

Students paying registration fees andtuition with a check that is subse-quently not honored by a financial in-stitution are subject to involuntarywithdrawal from the university if re-payment is not made. All students in-voluntarily withdrawn are charged tu-ition and/or registration fees accordingto the standard refund schedule as ofthe involuntary withdrawal date, as de-termined by the university.

On-Campus Housing. The cost of on-campus housing varies. In 1993–94 themost typical cost is $2,509 per aca-demic year. Meal plans are purchasedseparately. For more information, see“Residential Life,” pages 74–75.

PAYMENT METHODS ANDDEADLINES

InTouch. The InTouch system, at 602/350–1500, allows students to registerfor classes, drop/add and make fee pay-ment from any Touch-Tone phone.Fees can be paid from any Touch-Tonephone with available financial aid,debit cards bearing the cactus logo,VISA, and MasterCard. Refer to theSchedule of Classes for available datesand times and further information aboutthe InTouch system.

Debit/Credit Cards. ASU acceptsdebit cards bearing the cactus logo,VISA, and MasterCard. Debit/creditcard payments through InTouch areprocessed online with the bank. Seethe Schedule of Classes for informationabout using debit/credit cards by mailor campus payment boxes.

Check. Checks payable for the exactamount of charges and without a re-strictive endorsement are generally ac-ceptable, except for students on checkuse suspension due to a previously re-turned check.

Financial Aid. Students receiving fi-nancial aid may use their expected aidto pay university charges, including tu-ition and fees. Students who wish to doso must follow specified procedures.See the current Schedule of Classes forfurther information.

Veterans Deferred Payment. TheVeterans Readjustment Assistance Actallows veterans to apply for deferredpayment of registration fees. A Certifi-cate of Eligibility must be presented.Contact the Veterans Services Sectionfor information on meeting the neces-

sary requirements. The university maydeny this privilege to students with pre-vious delinquent obligations.

Payment Deadlines. Fees must bepaid by the deadline dates and times in-dicated or the registration is voided. Afee payment deadline is printed on allSchedule/Billing Statements and in theSchedule of Classes.

REFUNDS

Academic Year Registration Fee andNonresident Tuition. Students with-drawing from school or individualclasses receive a refund as follows:

The university provides a proratedrefund for first-time students receivingfinancial aid; therefore, the refundschedule is the minimum amount re-fundable to these students.

Withdrawal occurs on the calendarday that withdrawal is requested, eitherin person at a registrar site or by phoneusing InTouch, the ASU touch-tonetelephone system for registration andfee payment. Students withdrawing formedical or other extenuating circum-stances may contact the Comptroller’sOffice Student Fee Payment Section,SSV B235, for refunds that may beavailable under these circumstances.

Summer Sessions Fees. Studentswithdrawing from any summer sessionor individual classes receive a refund asfollows:

Refunds are based on the sessiondays and not the class meeting dates forany particular class.

Special Class Fees. Refunds, if any,are determined by the department offer-ing the course. Refund determinationis based on withdrawal date, type of ac-tivity, and costs already assessed by thedepartment.

Private Music Instruction. If a stu-dent must drop a music course becauseof illness or other emergency beyondhis or her control, not more than half ofthe instruction charge may be refunded,as determined by the School of Music.

Late Registration. This fee is not re-fundable.

Student Recreation Complex Fee.This fee is refundable only upon com-plete withdrawal in percentage incre-ments per the refund schedule.

Financial Aid Trust Fee. This fee isnot refundable.

Official Transcripts. Overpaymentsby mail of $5.00 or less are only re-funded by specific request.

Graduation Fee. Overpayments bymail of $5.00 or less are only refundedby specific request.

Residence Halls. Refunds to studentsdeparting from residence halls beforethe end of the academic year are com-puted on the following basis:

Charges and Deposits. Housingpayments and deposits are refunded asprescribed by the Residential Life Li-cense Agreement that students signwhen they apply for residence hall ac-commodations. Students should referto this document for specific informa-tion on refunds.

Checkout. A student’s checkout isbased on the date Residential Life isnotified on a prescribed checkout form,not the last day of occupancy.

Other University Charges. Other uni-versity charges are normally not re-fundable, except for individual circum-stances.

Payment of Refunds. Refunds requirestudent identification and are made forthe net of amounts due the university.When the last day of a refund periodfalls on a weekend or holiday, a with-drawal form must be submitted to oneof the registrar sites during operatinghours on the workday preceding theweekend or holiday. Refunds are nor-mally paid by check and are mailed tothe student’s local address.

Forfeiture of Refunds. Refunds aresubject to forfeiture unless obtainedwithin 90 days of the last class day ofthe semester for which the fees wereoriginally paid.

DELINQUENT FINANCIALOBLIGATIONS

Arizona Board of Regents’ Policy 4–103B, which applies to ASU, states thefollowing:

1. Each university shall establish pro-cedures to collect outstanding obli-gations owed by students andformer students.

2. Each university shall maintain asystem to record all delinquent fi-nancial obligations owed to thatuniversity by students and formerstudents.

3. Students with delinquent obliga-tions shall not be allowed to regis-ter for classes, purchase parkingdecals, receive cash refunds, or ob-tain transcripts, diplomas, or cer-tificates of degree. The universitymay allow students to register forclasses, obtain transcripts, diplo-mas or certificate of degree if thedelinquent obligation is $25.00 orless.

4. Unpaid obligations shall remain amatter of record until students andformer students satisfy their finan-cial obligations or until satisfactoryarrangements for repayment aremade with the university.

5. The university may write off delin-quent financial obligations of stu-dents according to accepted ac-counting principles and after appro-priate collection efforts. No suchwrite-off shall operate to relievethe student of liability for the obli-gation nor shall such write-off en-title the student to release of anytranscript, diploma or certificate ofdegree or to register for further uni-versity classes until such obligationis actually paid.

6. Each university shall include thispolicy in its bulletin or catalog.

A late charge of $10.00 is made forany balances due the university notpaid within 30 days of the initial duedate, with a second $10.00 late chargebeing made if these amounts are notpaid within 30 days of the first latecharge. Procedures to be followed fordisputed charges are available from theAccounts Receivable Section of the

RESIDENCY CLASSIFICATIONPROCEDURES AND POLICIES

The Arizona Board of Regents is re-quired by law to establish uniformguidelines and criteria for classifyingstudents’ residency to determine thosestudents who must pay nonresident tu-ition. The following is a summary ofthe general guidelines used to deter-mine residency for tuition purposes.All of the evidence is weighed underthe presumption that a nonresidentstudent’s presence in Arizona is prima-rily for the purpose of education andnot to establish domicile and that deci-sions of an individual about the intentto establish domicile are generallymade after the completion of an educa-tion and not before.

To obtain in-state status for tuitionpurposes, independent students mustestablish their residence in Arizona atleast one year immediately before thelast day of regular registration for thesemester in which they propose to at-tend ASU. Arizona residence is gener-ally established when individuals arephysically present in the state with theintention of making Arizona their per-manent home.

Mere physical presence in Arizonafor one year does not automatically es-tablish residency for in-state classifica-tion. Adult students and emancipatedminors must combine physical presencein Arizona for one year with objectiveevidence of their intent to make Ari-zona their permanent home. If thesesteps are delayed, the one-year periodis extended until both presence and in-tent have been demonstrated for onefull year. An adult student is defined asbeing at least 18 years of age at the be-ginning of the domicile year. No person is considered to havegained or lost in-state status merely byattending an out-of-state educational in-stitution.

Aliens. Students who are aliens aresubject to the same requirements for in-state residency as are U.S. citizens. In

establishing domicile, aliens must nothold a visa that prohibits establishingdomicile in Arizona.

Refugees. Refugees may qualify as in-state students by virtue of having beengranted refugee status in accordancewith all applicable laws of the UnitedStates and having met all other require-ments for residence in Arizona.

Exceptions to the GeneralResidency Rule

Students may be eligible for in-statestatus for tuition purposes if they canmeet one of the following criteria on orbefore the last day of regular registra-tion.

Legal Dependents. If a student and hisor her parents reside in Arizona andhave not met the one-year residency re-quirement but the parents are entitled toclaim the student as a dependent forfederal and state tax purposes, the stu-dent may be eligible for in-state statusfor tuition purposes.

Transferred Employees. If studentslive in Arizona and have not met theone-year residency requirement but areemployees or spouses of employeeswho have been transferred to Arizona

by their employers for employmentpurposes, the students may be eligiblefor in-state status for tuition purposes.

Members of the Military. If studentsare not domiciled in Arizona but aremembers of the U.S. Armed Forces sta-tioned in Arizona or are the spouses ordependent children of a member (as de-fined in A.R.S. § 43–1001), the stu-dents may be eligible for in-state statusfor tuition purposes. If military serviceis concluded while they are enrolled,students do not lose in-state statuswhile they are continuously enrolled ina degree program. If individuals aredomiciled in Arizona immediately be-fore becoming members of the U.S.Armed Forces, they do not lose in-statestatus because of their absence while onactive duty with the military as long asthey maintain Arizona affiliations andstate tax filing status consistent with aclaim to Arizona residence during theirabsence.

Native Americans. Students who aremembers of a Native American tribewhose reservation lies both in Arizonaand an adjacent state and who are resi-dents of that reservation may be eli-gible for in-state status for tuition pur-poses.

Financial AidThe primary responsibility for fi-

nancing a college education belongs tostudents and their families. Student Fi-nancial Assistance helps students meetthis responsibility by evaluating all aidapplications through the use of a stan-dard financial need analysis system.Student Financial Assistance deter-mines the cost of a student’s attendanceas well as how much students and theirfamilies can afford to contribute towardthat cost. It is the student’s responsibil-ity to complete all applications in anaccurate and timely manner and to no-tify Student Financial Assistance of anychanges in circumstances that might af-fect eligibility (e.g., loss of parent’s in-come or change in residency classifica-tion). Financial assistance is availablein the form of scholarships, grants,loans, and employment. This aid hasbeen made available collectively by theuniversity, alumni, private foundations,civic groups, individuals, and state andfederal governments.

To be considered for financial aid,all students must complete an applica-tion separate from the admission appli-cation. The Free Application for Fed-eral Student Aid (FAFSA) is the onlyrequired application. It is not necessaryto complete any other application thatmay require an application fee. Theform should be completed in January orFebruary preceding the academic yearthe student anticipates attending ASU.Students are notified by mail regardingany additional items or documentsneeded to complete their applications.These items may include copies of fed-eral tax returns, proof of valid visa, andproof of registration with the SelectiveService. The priority date for applyingis March 1. Applications completed bythis date are considered for all grantfunds. Applications completed afterthis date are processed; however, theyare considered late applications. Lateapplications may receive limited grantdollars and a higher proportion of loanor work dollars.

A statement-of-need letter is sent toall applicants. This letter estimates ex-penses and contribution for the schoolyear and specifies the amount of theapplicant’s financial need. If studentshave financial need in excess of$500.00, they receive a separate Finan-cial Aid Notification. This letter in-

forms them of the types and amounts ofaid they are eligible to receive throughASU. Applicants should read carefullyall correspondence received from Stu-dent Financial Assistance.

Students receiving aid from StudentFinancial Assistance are required tomeet minimum standards of satisfac-tory academic progress. In addition tomaintaining the minimum GPA definedfor good academic standing, under-graduate students awarded on a full-time basis must complete a minimumof 24 semester hours within the aca-demic year. Failure to meet these stan-dards results in the suspension of aidfunds for subsequent semesters untilthe deficiency is satisfied.

TYPES OF FINANCIAL AIDAND MAJOR PROGRAMS

More than 24,000 students receive fi-nancial aid resources that total morethan $120 million. There are four cat-egories of financial aid: scholarships,grants, loans, and employment.

ScholarshipsThere are two sources of scholar-

ships at ASU: university-funded schol-arships and private donor scholarships.Many scholarships are offered on thebasis of meritorious criteria. However,financial need criteria may also be in-cluded in the selection of recipients.Other considerations are GPA, leader-ship qualities, and community service.

The Scholarship Office coordinatesall scholarship programs. High schoolstudents should contact their highschool counselors to determine the ap-propriate process for obtaining a vari-ety of scholarships available to enteringfreshmen. Other undergraduate stu-dents may contact the Scholarship Of-fice. In addition, many academic unitsprovide scholarship funding on a meri-torious basis and select students basedon a variety of criteria, which includeartistic talent, musical ability, and ath-letic performance.

Private Donor Scholarships. Morethan 6,000 students at ASU receive pri-vate donor scholarships. Most of thesescholarship funds are provided by em-ployers, private individuals, organiza-tions, and corporations. In most cases,the private donor specifies the criteriaused by the Scholarship Office to iden-tify candidates for a particular scholar-ship.

Procedures for EstablishingResidency Status

All students are responsible for ob-taining residency classification for tu-ition purposes before registering andpaying their fees. This procedure re-quires students to complete and file adomicile affidavit form. This form isrequired of all new and returning stu-dents as part of the admission or read-mission process. Students classified asnonresidents who believe they mayqualify for in-state status must file anapplication with the Residency Classifi-cation Section. This application mustbe filed by the last day of regular regis-tration. A student seeking in-state sta-tus must also file supporting documen-tation necessary to provide a basis forin-state classification (source[s] of sup-port, driver’s license, voter’s registra-tion, vehicle registration, etc.). Stu-dents whose residency applications arein process at the fee payment deadlineare responsible for paying out-of-statetuition and fees. However, an appropri-ate refund is issued if residency is latergranted for that semester.

Any student found to have made afalse or misleading statement concern-ing residency or tuition status is subjectto dismissal from the university.

Failure to file a timely written appli-cation for reclassification of residencystatus for tuition purposes constitutes awaiver of the student’s right to applyfor the given semester. Applicationdeadlines are published each semesterin the Schedule of Classes.

Residency classification is an ex-tremely complex issue. The informa-tion presented here is a summary anddoes not address each individual’s situ-ation; therefore, students are encour-aged to make a personal visit to theResidency Classification Section to dis-cuss their individual circumstances assoon as possible. University Scholarships. More than5,200 ASU students receive a scholar-ship that is generally in the value of tu-ition and/or fees from universitysources. The largest source for univer-sity scholarships is the waiver programauthorized by the Arizona Board of Re-gents. In addition, many scholarshipsare funded from a general endowmentfund. Some of the typical areas tar-geted for these scholarships are top aca-demic seniors in Arizona high schools,underrepresented minority students,students who demonstrate leadership,students who demonstrate scholastic orscientific abilities, students with dis-abilities, and nontraditional students.

GrantsLike scholarships, grants are pro-

vided to students without repayment orservice obligation. However, the crite-rion to receive a grant is generally acalculation of financial need. Morethan 8,500 ASU students receive someform of grant.

Federal Pell Grant. The Federal PellGrant program is funded by the federalgovernment and is a basic financial re-source to low- and moderate-incomestudents. Eligibility is determinedthrough the Financial Aid Applicationprocess by the federal government.Under this program, the university con-verts entitlements to cash grant pay-ments. A student may be eligible for amaximum grant of $2,300.00 per year.

Federal Supplemental Grant. Fundsare received from the federal govern-ment by the university, which is re-quired to match the funds. Student Fi-nancial Assistance then determines theeligibility of a student based on a spe-cific calculation of exceptional finan-cial need. Generally, recipients of theFederal Pell Grant are eligible to re-ceive a Federal Supplemental Grant.Maximum grants are $2,000.00.

Arizona State Grant. This program isa three-partner program of federal,state, and university funding. Studentswith a high financial need may receivethis particular form of funding. It is re-stricted to residents of Arizona. Maxi-mum grants are $1,000.00.

Arizona Trust Fund. This grantsource is provided in partnership be-tween ASU students and the state legis-lature. These funds are provided pri-marily to resident, undergraduate, or

underrepresented students with a highfinancial need. Maximum grants are$1,000.00.

University Grant. University Grantsare generally reserved as the last finan-cial aid program to be used to resolve astudent’s need. Grants range from$200.00 to $2,000.00.

LoansAbout 13,000 students borrow ap-

proximately $45 million annually. Avariety of loan programs are providedto assist students and, in some cases,parents in the financing of a universityeducation.

Federal Stafford Student Loan.Through the Federal Stafford StudentLoan program, the federal governmentguarantees loans from private lendersto students. The university must,through a need analysis process, deter-mine the eligibility for each loan appli-cant. Repayment is made after gradua-tion. For new borrowers, there is avariable interest rate that is adjusted an-nually and cannot exceed 9%. No re-payment during the enrollment periodis required, and the federal governmentpays the interest on the loan during theenrollment period. Deferment provi-sions for community service are avail-able. Freshmen may borrow up to$2,625.00 per year, sophomores mayborrow up to $3,500.00, and juniorsand seniors may borrow up to$5,500.00 per year.

Federal Perkins Loan. The FederalPerkins Loan program is similar to theFederal Stafford Student Loan pro-gram. However, the funding source isthe federal government, and matchingfunds are provided by the university.In this particular program, the univer-sity is the lender, and repayments aftergraduation are made to the university ata 5% interest rate. No interest ischarged or accumulated during the pe-riod of enrollment. Annual loan maxi-mums are $3,000.00. Deferment andcancellation provisions are available forcommunity service and qualifying lawenforcement and teaching occupations.

Federal Supplemental Loan. FederalSupplemental Loans are available to in-dependent students who may need toborrow from more than one program.This program is generally the secondone used for those students. Addition-ally, students who do not have a dem-

onstrated financial need may borrowunder this program. There is no sub-sidy, and interest must be paid duringthe enrollment period or it accrues untilgraduation. The interest rate is about7%. Maximum loans are $4,000.00 or$5,000.00 per year depending upongrade level.

Federal Parent Loans. The FederalParental Loan for Undergraduate Stu-dents (PLUS) is made to parents, notstudents. The intent is to help parentsmake a contribution to their children’seducation. There is no subsidy to thisprogram, and parents begin to repaythis loan within 60 days after the loan istaken. The interest rate is about 7%.The maximum loan amount is deter-mined by subtracting all other financialaid awarded from the average cost ofattendance.

EmploymentApproximately 7,000 students earn

$26 million from on-campus part-timestudent employment programs.

Federal Work-Study. Funds for thisprogram are provided on a matchingbasis by the federal government and theuniversity. Students employed underthis program receive the same pay ratesas other students being employed at theuniversity. In this program, studentsmust demonstrate a financial need.Employers are encouraged to hire mi-nority and needy students.

University Hourly. The university,with its own resources, hires many stu-dents on a part-time basis. Althoughthe jobs are similar to those under theFederal Work-Study Program, the uni-versity provides the entire amount ofthe student’s wage.

Part-Time Off-Campus. The univer-sity receives requests for assistancefrom many agencies and corporationsthroughout the area to help them recruitand hire students on a part-time basis.The referral service at the universityprovides opportunities for students notonly to earn funds to support their edu-cation but to gain experience in the ar-eas of their majors or career interests.

Persons interested in admission to anundergraduate program at ASU need tohave the following items on file at Un-dergraduate Admissions:

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), orTest of English as a Foreign Lan-guage (TOEFL) scores (as needed);and

4. a $35.00 nonrefundable applicationfee (required of all applicants ap-plying as nonresidents or residingoutside Arizona).

Applicants are urged to apply and tohave their materials sent as soon aspossible to enable university officials tomake an early decision concerning theapplicant’s admission and to permit thestudent to take part in preregistrationand orientation. After all necessaryitems are received, a minimum of fourweeks should be allowed for an admis-sion decision to be made.

Early Notification Date. Applicantswhose files are complete by November1 receive notification by December 1.Applicants whose files are complete byDecember 1 receive notification byJanuary 15.

Priority Application Date. Applicantswhose files are not complete by April15 for fall semester or November 15 forspring semester may not be admitted intime to register for the desired semes-ter.

Admitted students who do not regis-ter must submit a new application ifthey wish to apply for a subsequent se-mester. All documents are destroyedone year after the semester for whichthe student has applied if the student isnot registered in a degree program.

Any misrepresentation or falsifica-tion on the admission application, in-cluding failure to report any college oruniversity attendance, is cause for can-cellation of enrollment and any creditsearned.

Application. Prospective studentsmust complete and sign the Applicationfor Undergraduate Admission. A$35.00 nonrefundable application fee isrequired of all applicants applying asnonresidents or residing outside Ari-zona.

Domicile Affidavit. Like other state-supported colleges and universities,ASU distinguishes between in-state andout-of-state students with regard to tu-ition. Residents of Arizona are re-quired to file a Domicile Affidavit,which is part of the admission applica-tion. Any student who does not com-plete the Domicile Affidavit is classi-fied as an out-of-state resident for tu-ition purposes. Transcripts. Transcripts must be re-quested by the applicant. Official tran-scripts of academic records from highschool and a separate transcript fromeach institution of higher education thestudent has attended must be mailed di-rectly to Undergraduate Admissions bythe records office of the issuing institu-tion(s). Transcripts sent or hand car-ried by the applicants themselves ortransmitted by facsimile (fax) machineare not accepted. High school tran-scripts must show GPA, rank in class,and date of graduation. Applicants

with fewer than 36 semester hours oftransferable college or university creditmust also have official high schoolrecords submitted. An English transla-tion of all non-English transcripts is re-quired.

Entrance Examinations. All newfreshman applicants must take eitherthe American College Test (ACT) orScholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) on anational test date in their junior or se-nior years of high school. Transfer ap-plicants who have completed fewerthan 36 semester hours of acceptablecollege or university work must submitACT or SAT scores, which are used tocomplete competency requirements andfor course placement.

A report of the test scores should besent to Undergraduate Admissions di-rectly from the American College Test-ing Program, P.O. Box 168, Iowa City,Iowa 52240, or the College Board Ad-missions Testing Program, Box 592–R,Princeton, New Jersey 08540.

Undergraduate Admissions may in-vestigate any test score that is inconsis-tent with a student’s academic record orprevious scores.

Applicants whose native language isnot English usually are required to takethe Test of English as a Foreign Lan-guage (TOEFL). See “InternationalStudent Admissions,” on page 35.

Certificate of Admission. After beingadmitted, students receive a Certificateof Admission, a Measles ImmunizationVerification form, and publications thatcontain information about orientationprograms.

Upon receipt, a student should checkthe Certificate of Admission for accu-racy and report any errors and changesto Undergraduate Admissions at 602/965–1358 for more information.

Immunization Requirements. Everynewly admitted student must provide acomplete immunization history to Stu-dent Health. Newly admitted students aresent information preceding each orien-tation program. Students are stronglyencouraged to attend orientation activi-ties.

Undergraduate AdmissionStandards

The Arizona Board of Regents estab-lishes undergraduate admission stan-dards for the university in general.Particular colleges, schools, or depart-ments within the university may estab-lish stricter standards, which are givenin the respective sections of the catalogand should be noted by students plan-ning to enroll in any of these programs.

Admission Requirements

Graduation from Secondary School.To be eligible for admission to ASU,an applicant must have graduated froma recognized high school with satisfac-tory scholarship defined as meetingboth the general aptitude and basiccompetency requirements shown in the“General Aptitude Requirements forFreshmen” and “General Aptitude Re-quirements for College Transfers”tables and the “Basic Competency Re-quirements” table, page 33.

Applicants with a maximum of onedeficiency in no more than two compe-tency areas may be admitted with con-

ditions subject to removing the defi-ciencies within one calendar year ofuniversity enrollment. (See page 48 foran explanation of procedures to meetthese competencies.)

Competencies may be met by combi-nations of high school and collegecourses or test scores. A minimum2.00 average (4.00 = A) must be earnedin the courses taken in each of the fourcompetency areas. Transfer studentswith 36 or more transferable semesterhours and students 22 years of age orolder at the time of enrollment needonly meet the general aptitude require-ments. An applicant whose most recenteducation is outside the United States isexempt from fulfilling the competencyrequirements. See the “Basic Compe-tency Requirements” table, page 33.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sci-ences strongly recommends a minimumof two years of a single foreign lan-guage.

The College of Nursing requires oneyear each of high school physics andchemistry. Two years of high schoolchemistry are recommended.

school graduation showing the finalGPA, the rank in class, and the date ofgraduation has been received in themail by Undergraduate Admissions di-rectly from the high school. In addi-tion, students who are admitted withmore than two deficiencies must sub-mit, at least 45 days in advance of thesemester, official records to verify thecompletion of competencies such thatno more than two deficiencies remain.Students with more than two deficien-cies who have not been admitted 45days in advance of the semester maynot be eligible for admission. An ad-mission may be cancelled if the finalverification shows that the applicanthas not met the university requirementsfor admission or that more than two de-ficiencies remain.

Admission with Distinction. Admis-sion with Distinction certificates recog-nizing outstanding scholarship areawarded to entering freshmen who rankin the top 10% of their high schoolgraduating classes. This designation ishonorary in nature and does not includea financial award.

Admission of Nondegree Appli-cants—Undergraduate. Any highschool graduate is invited to enroll forsix or fewer semester hours per semes-ter of undergraduate course work as anondegree student. Students currentlyenrolled in high school and persons un-der the age of 18 may be admitted asnondegree students by submitting offi-cial ACT or SAT scores that meet thegeneral aptitude requirements of theuniversity. Persons admitted as non-degree students for a specific year andterm must remain nondegree until thenext semester.

Anyone interested in admission as anondegree undergraduate student atASU must submit to UndergraduateAdmissions: (1) a Nondegree Under-graduate Application for Admission(including Domicile Affidavit) and (2)a $35.00 nonrefundable application fee(for applicants applying as nonresidentsor residing outside Arizona). Appli-cants who are not high school graduatesor who are younger than age 18 mustalso submit ACT or SAT scores.

No more than 15 hours of completednondegree work may be applied to adegree program if the completedcourses meet specific requirementswithin a degree program. A nondegreestudent who decides to work toward a

bachelor’s degree must apply for ad-mission to a degree program with Un-dergraduate Admissions and meet theadmission requirements.

Once registered in a regular degreeprogram, a student is not permitted toregister again in nondegree status.Nondegree students are not eligible toreceive most types of financial aid, norare they eligible to receive certain ben-efits, such as veteran benefits.

Transfer Applicants

Arizona Applicants. An Arizona ap-plicant for transfer admission musthave a cumulative GPA of 2.00 orhigher on a 4.00 = A scale in all workundertaken at previous institutions ofhigher learning. A minimum of 12 col-lege or university transferable semesterhours must have been earned in orderto be considered a transfer applicant.

Arizona transfer applicants musthave the respective minimum GPAs tobe admitted to the professional pro-grams in the following areas: ComputerScience—2.50; Construction—2.25;Engineering—2.50; Speech and Hear-ing Science—2.50; and Technology—2.25. Other academic units may havedifferent GPA requirements to enroll injunior- or senior-level courses.

Nonresident Applicants. A non-Ari-zona applicant for transfer admissionmust have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 orhigher on a 4.00 = A scale in all workundertaken at previous institutions ofhigher learning. Those applicants whohave at least a 2.00 on a 4.00 = A scaleand who believe that they have a strongacademic record are encouraged to ap-ply and are considered on a case-by-case basis.

All applicants having completedfewer than 36 semester hours of trans-ferable college or university work mustsubmit official high school records, in-cluding an ACT or SAT score, andmeet basic competency requirements.Students who will be 22 years old bythe time the semester begins are exemptfrom the competency requirements.

Transfer CreditCredit is awarded for traditional

course work successfully completed atinstitutions of higher learning as indi-cated by ASU and the Arizona Boardof Regents. Whether the specific cred-its can be applied toward a degree de-pends on the requirements of the de-partment, division, school, or college in

which the student is enrolled. Thereare several qualifications:

1. Transfer credit is not given forcourses in which the lowest passinggrade (“D”) or a failing grade wasreceived.

2. While courses successfully com-pleted but evaluated on nontradi-tional grading systems (e.g., pass/fail) are acceptable for transfer,some colleges in the universitymay not accept such credits to ful-fill graduation requirements.

3. Grades and honor points earned atother colleges and universities areconsidered for admission but arenot included in computing thestudent’s cumulative GPA at ASU.

Certain types of credits cannot betransferred to ASU, including the fol-lowing types:

1. credits awarded by postsecondaryinstitutions in the United States thatlack candidate status or accredita-tion by a regional accrediting asso-ciation;

2. credits awarded by postsecondaryinstitutions for life experience;

3. credits awarded by postsecondaryinstitutions for courses taken atnoncollegiate institutions (e.g.,governmental agencies, corpora-tions, industrial firms); and

4. credits awarded by postsecondaryinstitutions for noncredit courses,workshops, and seminars offeredby other postsecondary institutionsas part of continuing education pro-grams.

Acceptable academic credits earnedat other institutions that are based on adifferent unit of credit than the one pre-scribed by the Arizona Board of Re-gents are subject to conversion beforebeing transferred to ASU.

Veterans Exception. By Arizona stat-ute, no failing grades received by a vet-eran at an Arizona university or com-munity college before military servicemay be considered when determiningadmissibility. This exception appliesonly to veterans who

1. are honorably discharged;2. have served in the armed forces of

the United States for a minimum oftwo years; and

3. have previously enrolled at a uni-versity or community college inArizona.

Military service records must be sub-mitted, including form DD 214.

Community Colleges. A maximum of64 semester hours are accepted aslower-division credit when transferredfrom community, junior, or two-yearcolleges.

Community college students whoplan to transfer to ASU at the end oftheir first or second years are stronglyadvised to plan their community col-lege courses to meet the requirementsof the curricula they select.

Students Attending Arizona Commu-nity Colleges. To determine theequivalency of courses offered by Ari-zona community colleges and coursesoffered at ASU, a student should referto the Arizona Higher EducationCourse Equivalency Guide in consulta-tion with an academic advisor. Pro-vided college attendance has been con-tinuous, a student is permitted to followthe degree requirements specified in theASU catalog in effect at the time he orshe began community college work.See page 72, “Guidelines for Determi-nation of Catalog Year.”

Admission before Receipt of FinalTranscript. Students enrolled in othercolleges and universities are consideredfor admission on the basis of meetingall admission requirements, except for afinal transcript of work in progress.This final transcript must be sent to Un-dergraduate Admissions directly fromthe issuing institution immediately afterthe work in progress has been com-pleted. Hand-carried transcripts are notaccepted. Admission is confirmed onlyafter the final transcript has been re-ceived showing that the applicant hasmet the university admission require-ments. In the event the applicant doesnot qualify or has falsified applicationdocuments, admission and registrationare cancelled, and any registration feespaid are returned.

Appeal Procedure. Transfer studentswho feel they have been unjustly de-nied credit for courses they have takenmay appeal to the standards committeeof the colleges in which they have en-rolled. This procedure does not applyto community college transfer of creditgreater than the 64-hour maximum; see“Community Colleges” on page 35.The decision of this committee is final.

An applicant for transfer admissionwhose academic record fails to meetASU admission standards is denied ad-mission. Such an applicant, however,may write a letter of appeal accompa-nied by three letters of recommendationto the University Undergraduate Ad-missions Board for reconsideration ofhis or her application:

TOEFL

Applicants whose native language isnot English (identified by the U.S. De-partment of State Bureau of Public Af-fairs) must provide evidence of Englishlanguage proficiency as indicated byacceptable scores on the Test of En-glish as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).A minimum TOEFL score of 500 is re-quired for general admission to the uni-versity, and a minimum score of 550 isrequired for the professional programs

in the School of Engineering, the DelE. Webb School of Construction, andthe College of Architecture and Envi-ronmental Design. The following threeexceptions apply:

1. Applicants who have completedtheir junior and senior years in aU.S. high school may provide anSAT Verbal score of 500 or anACT English subscore of 23 inplace of a TOEFL score for theprofessional programs in theSchool of Engineering, the Del E.Webb School of Construction, andthe College of Architecture and En-vironmental Design. Scores of 450on the SAT Verbal or 21 on the En-glish subscore place these appli-cants in the preprofessional pro-grams.

2. Applicants who have completed aminimum of 48 semester hours oftransfer credits at a U.S. college oruniversity (including completion oftwo semesters of first-year compo-sition, earning a minimum 2.50 cu-mulative GPA), may submit aTOEFL score of 550, an SAT Ver-bal score of 500, or an ACT En-glish subscore of 23 for the profes-sional programs in the School ofEngineering, Del E. Webb Schoolof Construction, and the College ofArchitecture and EnvironmentalDesign. Applicants providingscores below the standards are ad-mitted into the preprofessional pro-grams.

3. Applicants who have received abachelor’s degree from a college oruniversity in the United States areexempt from the TOEFL. If theseapplicants meet the admission stan-dards for the professional pro-grams, exclusive of language tests,they are admitted to the profes-sional program.

All required application materialsmust be received by UndergraduateAdmissions no later than May 15 forfall applicants and October 15 forspring applicants.

Upon admission to the university,such students are issued a Certificate ofEligibility (Form I–20 or IAP–66),which enables them to apply for theappropriate visa.

All F–1 or J–1 visa students musthave insurance coverage against illnessand accident before being permitted toregister. Insurance must be maintained

Special Programs forAdvanced Placementand Credit

A maximum of 60 hours of credit isawarded for any or all programs, in-cluding ASU comprehensive and profi-ciency examinations. In these catego-ries, only credit earned by comprehen-sive examination counts toward theresident credit requirement for gradua-tion.

Advanced Placement. Students whohave taken an advanced placementcourse of the College Entrance Exami-nation Board (CEEB) in their second-ary school and who have taken an Ad-vanced Placement Examination ofCEEB may receive university credit.No credit is given for any examinationwith a score of 2 or 1.

When the scores are received by theuniversity directly from CEEB, credit isawarded as shown in the “AdvancedPlacement Credit” table, pages 37–38.

College-Level Examination Program(CLEP). Students who have taken aCollege-Level Examination of the Col-lege Entrance Examination Board mayreceive university credit. The table ofCLEP credit applies to all students en-rolling in the university for the firsttime in August 1975 and any studentenrolling thereafter. CLEP examina-tion credit is not given where (1) it du-plicates credit previously earned by thestudent at the university or accepted bythe university for work done elsewhere

or (2) it is more elementary than acourse in which the student has alreadyreceived credit. All examinations aregiven monthly by the University Test-ing Services.

No more than six semester hourstaken under CLEP may be applied to-ward university general studies require-ments. General studies requirements innatural sciences (S1 and S2) and lit-eracy and critical inquiry (L1 and L2)are not satisfied by CLEP.

General Examinations. To obtaincredit or placement, students must re-ceive a standard score of 500 or higherfor the General Examinations, exceptfor English Composition with Essay, onwhich students must receive a standardscore of 610/1978 scale or 500/1986scale. Students who have completed 60semester hours of credit are not eligibleto receive any credit for the CLEPGeneral Examinations.

Subject Examinations. A standardscore of 50 or higher must be receivedto obtain credit for any subject exami-nation. The completion of 60 semesterhours of credit does not preclude eligi-bility for additional credit for subjectexaminations.

All equivalency is subject to futurereview and possible catalog change.

International BaccalaureateDiploma/Certificate. Students whopresent an International BaccalaureateDiploma/Certificate may qualify foruniversity credit, depending on thelevel of the examination and the gradereceived. Arizona State Universitygrants credit for higher-level coursesonly. A grade of 5 qualifies the studentto receive credit for up to twointroductory courses while a grade of 4qualifies a student to receive credit forone introductory course. No credit isawarded for the English as a SecondLanguage (English B) or foreignlanguage examinations (ForeignLanguage A or B). A number of restrictions apply. Thestudent must be enrolled at ASU withno more than 100 semester hours ofcredit earned. The examinations mustbe taken during the first two semestersin residence in a degree program at theuniversity. No more than 60 semester

hours of credit may be established bycomprehensive examinations (includingAP and CLEP credit) and correspon-dence courses.

Comprehensive examinations maynot be taken in any course in which thestudent has been given admission creditor transfer credit from any educationalinstitution. Credit may not be receivedfor an examination in an elementarylevel of a field in which the student hasearned more advanced credit nor for a

prerequisite for a course already com-pleted.

The decision on the suitability ofcourse material for a comprehensiveexamination, the development of acomprehensive examination, and theadministration of an examination arestrictly departmental functions. An ap-plication is for one course only. Thestudent completes an application formwith the number, title, and number ofsemester hours for the course. When

The student must then pay the statedfee for such examinations at theCashier’s Office. The receipt must betaken to the departmental office.

The examination is prepared by theinstructor who normally conducts thecourse, and it is comprehensive in na-ture and scope. The instructor andother experts designated by the chairgrade the examination, using lettergrades “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “E.” Ifthe grade is “C” or better, a mark of“Y” is entered on the student’s perma-nent record; otherwise, no entry ismade. Credit by examination is indi-cated as such on the record. The stu-dent is notified by mail of the result ofthe examination. In cases of failure(“D” or “E”), the student is not givenan opportunity to repeat the examina-tion.

A student pursuing a second bacca-laureate degree may not receive creditby comprehensive examination, but,with prior approval of the college, thestudent may use the examination towaive a course requirement if a gradeof “C” or better is earned.

Proficiency Examinations. Profi-ciency examinations and auditions aregiven

1. to waive a course requirement;2. to validate certain transfer credits

in professional programs; and3. to determine a student’s ability in a

field where competence is an im-portant consideration.

Detailed information may be ob-tained from the dean’s office of the col-lege in which the student is registered.

PLACEMENT EXAMINATIONSFOR PROFICIENCY

English. New students and continuing,re-entry, transfer, and nondegree stu-dents who have not taken any composi-tion courses are placed in First-YearComposition courses according to theirscores on the ACT English or SATVerbal tests. Students who score 18(16)* or below on the ACT English testor 380 or below on the SAT Verbal testmust enroll in WAC 101, a basic writ-ing course (see page 45). Students whoscore between 19 (17)* and 28 (24)* on__________________

The flowchart places em-phasis on a student’s prior preparationand performance in mathematics. Inmost lower-division mathematicscourses, an intensive review by the stu-dents is followed by a test during thefirst week of classes. Students not do-ing well on these tests are encouragedto enroll immediately in a less demand-ing mathematics course. Those stu-dents needing additional evaluation areencouraged to take the Algebra Place-ment Exam or the Calculus PlacementExam, administered by appointment atUniversity Testing Services (UTS),EDB 302. ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT

Effective academic advisement ofstudents is an essential aspect of theeducational experience at ASU. Theuniversity is committed to providequality advisement to students and, atthe same time, recognizes that it is theresponsibility of the student to makeadvising contacts. To assure timelyand accurate advisement to their ma-jors, each college has advisors to assiststudents in developing programs ofstudy, assessing educational goals, andunderstanding rules, procedures, andcurriculum requirements. In some col-leges, these advisors are faculty mem-bers. In others, they are full-time, pro-fessional advisors. In most instances,students have academic and career ad-visement available from both facultymembers and full-time advisors. Stu-dents are encouraged to take advantageof the skill and knowledge of the advis-ing professionals available to them.Most new students and many continu-ing students have mandatory advise-ment as a condition of registration.

An additional unit, the UniversityAcademic Advising Center, is a centraladvising, referral, and information fa-cility whose staff are available to assiststudents in their academic careers atASU. READMISSION TO THEUNIVERSITY

Undergraduate students who havepreviously attended ASU but have notbeen enrolled at ASU for one semesteror more are required to apply for read-mission for the semester in which re-enrollment is intended. If, meanwhile,the student has attended another ac-credited college or university, it is nec-essary for the student to have on file anofficial transcript of all academic worktaken. Failure to report such atten-dance is considered misrepresentationand falsification of university records.In addition, it is considered cause forRecords Hold action and withholdingof further registration privileges.

An applicant for readmission to a de-gree program must meet the require-ments for good standing (page 48) andthe requirements of the college towhich the application is being made.An applicant who has been denied re-admission may appeal to the UniversityUndergraduate Admissions Board.Nondegree applicants for readmissionmust have a minimum GPA of 2.00. Ifnot, the applicant must apply to ASUthrough Undergraduate Admissions.

Conditional Readmission. A studentcompleting academic work in progressat another institution may be grantedconditional readmission. This condi-tional status remains effective until anofficial transcript is received. The stu-dent is subject to Records Hold actionand additional registration privilegesare withheld if this condition for read-mission is not cleared by mid-semester.

ACADEMIC RENEWAL

Academic renewal is a universitypolicy administered for the purpose ofrecalculating the ASU cumulative GPAof undergraduate students who havebeen readmitted to a degree programafter an absence of at least five continu-ous calendar years and who have com-pleted in good standing a minimum of12 college-approved additional hours inresidence within three semesters afterre-entry. Students may have the formeracademic record before the five-yearabsence (including transfer credits) ac-cepted in the same manner as if thecredits were community college trans-fer credits. That is, earned hours arecarried forward for up to 64 hours ofcredit in which a grade of “C” or betterwas earned. The cumulative GPA is

based only on credits earned subse-quent to the student’s re-entry. Allgraduation residency, academic recog-nition residency, and GPA require-ments must be fulfilled after academicrenewal.

A request for academic renewal fol-lows this procedure:

1. Students interested in academic re-newal must request the Applicationfor Academic Renewal from theReadmission Section of the Officeof the Registrar or the dean of thecollege offering the major.

2. The Application for Academic Re-newal may be submitted immedi-ately upon readmission but notlater than the start of the third se-mester after readmission. Creditsmust be completed by the third se-mester after re-entry.

3. The Application for Academic Re-newal is submitted by the studentto the dean of the college offeringthe major.

4. The dean specifies in advance aminimum of 12 semester hours.

5. When the approved credits arecompleted with a cumulative GPAof 2.50 or higher, the dean for-wards the Application for Aca-demic Renewal to the Office of theRegistrar for processing.

Only students working toward theirfirst undergraduate degree are eligibleto apply for academic renewal, whichmay be effected only once during astudent’s academic career. Academicrenewal is transferable among colleges.Eligibility for graduation is based onthe ASU cumulative GPA after aca-demic renewal. However, a student’scomplete record—before and after aca-demic renewal—remains on the tran-script and may be taken into consider-ation when a student applies for under-graduate professional or graduateprograms.

RegistrationAll persons attending a class at ASU

must be registered for that class. A stu-dent is considered to be registeredwhen all registration fees have beenpaid in full.

Eligibility. Only eligible students mayregister for courses at ASU. An eli-gible student is either continuing fromthe previous semester or has been ad-mitted or readmitted to the university.

Proof of Identification. In order to re-ceive university services, photo identi-fication must be presented. Each ad-mitted or readmitted student who com-pletes the registration process for aregular semester needs to obtain a stu-dent identification card. This photoidentification card is valid for the dura-tion of the student’s enrollment atASU.

Photo IDs are issued throughout thesemester at the Payne registrar site,EDB 42, and at selected times in theMemorial Union. See the Schedule ofClasses. Refer to page 26, “ID Card.”

Registration Fees. Registration feesare due and must be paid in full at thetime specified each semester in theSchedule of Classes. If any paymenttendered is unauthorized, incomplete,or received after the due date, registra-tion fees are considered not paid.

Schedule of Classes. The Schedule ofClasses, published for the fall andspring semesters, and the Summer Ses-sions Bulletin are distributed withoutcharge. They list course offerings,dates, times, places, and procedures forregistration, along with other importantinformation relating to the term.

Course Loads. A minimum full-timecourse load for an undergraduate stu-dent is 12 semester hours. The maxi-mum course load for which a studentmay register is 18 semester hours (withthe exception of a 19-hour maximumfor students enrolled in the Colleges ofEngineering and Applied Sciences orArchitecture and Environmental De-sign). A student wishing to register formore than the maximum must petitionthe standards committee of the collegein which he or she is enrolled and mustpresent an approved override at thetime of registration. See “SummerCourse Loads,” page 42, for summercourse load information.

Reserving of Course Credit by Un-dergraduates. Seniors at ASU within12 semester hours of graduation mayenroll in a 400-level or graduate courseand reserve the credit for possible usein a future graduate program. Thecourse cannot be used to meet a bacca-laureate graduation requirement. Be-fore registration in the course, the stu-

dent must submit a Graduate CollegePetition form requesting credit reserva-tion. The form must be signed by thestudent’s advisor, the head of the aca-demic unit offering the class, and thedean of the Graduate College.

Permission to reserve a course doesnot guarantee admission to a graduatedegree program or that the course maybe used toward graduate degree re-quirements. A maximum of nine hoursof credit may be reserved, and onlycourses with an “A” or “B” grade areapplicable. Reserved credit earned be-fore admission to a graduate degreeprogram is classified as nondegreecredit. The maximum course load for astudent enrolled in a reserved course is15 semester hours during a regular se-mester and six hours during a summersession.

Summer Course Loads. Maximumload for each five-week session is sixsemester hours and nine semester hoursfor an eight-week session. The studentregistering in a five-week session andan eight-week session simultaneouslymay not exceed the following combina-tions of semester hours:

Concurrent Enrollment. Providedthat the other university regulationsconcerning enrollment, graduation re-quirements, and transfer of credits arenot violated, a student may enroll inclasses at other institutions or in corre-spondence courses while enrolled atASU. However, the student is urged toseek advisement before concurrent en-rollment to assure orderly progress to-ward a degree. If total credits exceedthe maximum course load, prior per-mission must be granted by the collegestandards committee. (See “CourseLoads,” page 42.)

Attendance. The instructor has fullauthority to decide whether class atten-dance is required.

Enrollment Verification Guidelines.The registrar is responsible for verify-ing enrollment according to the generalguidelines in the table of enrollmentverification guidelines.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION

Cooperative Education at ASU isany educational program that requiresalternating classroom and work experi-ence in government or industry. Thework experience exists for its educa-tional value.

Full-time Status of Co-op Students.A co-op student, during a work semes-ter, is identified as both co-op and fulltime by the university if he or she wasfull time during a “cooperative educa-tion” course.

Rights and Privileges of Co-op Stu-dents. During their work semesters, co-op students have the rights, privileges,and protections—with regard to univer-sity matters—accorded to full-time stu-dents, except financial aid assistance.They maintain catalog continuity andhave student access to university facili-ties and events.

Financial Aid for Co-op Students.Co-op students are not identified tolenders (including ASU) as being inloan repayment status. They have an“in school” full-time enrollment status.Co-op students do not receive any fi-nancial aid disbursement during theirco-op semesters nor are such awardstransferred to another semester. Thestudent is responsible for notifying Stu-dent Financial Assistance as soon asplans for a co-op term are made but nolater than 10 days before the co-op termbegins. The department or school is re-

sponsible for notifying Student Finan-cial Assistance of students approved forco-op terms.

Traveling Scholar Program. TheTraveling Scholar Program is a coop-erative program between the three stateuniversities designed to enable studentsto take advantage of programs or spe-cial resources that are not available attheir own institutions. Any under-graduate student with a GPA of at least2.50 or graduate student with a GPA ofat least 3.00 enrolled full-time at Ari-zona State University, Northern Ari-zona University, or University of Ari-zona may be designated a TravelingScholar by prior mutual agreement ofthe appropriate academic authorities atboth the sponsoring and hosting institu-tions. Omni-bus courses are often offered for a vari-able number of semester hours. Omnibus Undergraduate Courses

191 First-Year Seminar. This omni-bus course, ranging from one to threesemester hours, is designed to bringfaculty and small groups of students to-gether to discuss topics of common in-terest. Students must have freshmanclass standing to enroll. Contact youracademic advisor for more information.

194, 294, 394, and 494 Special Topics.These courses cover topics of immedi-ate or special interest to a faculty mem-ber and students. They range in creditfrom one to four semester hours.

484 Internship. These courses offerstructured practical experience follow-ing a contract or plan, supervised byfaculty and practitioners. Internshipsrange in credit from one to 12 semesterhours.

498 Pro-Seminar. These courses in-volve small-group study and researchfor advanced students within their ma-jors. Major status in the department orapproval of the instructor is required.These courses range in credit from oneto seven semester hours.

499 Independent Study. The coursenumber 499 has been reserved for Inde-pendent Study courses in each of theinstructional departments or divisionsof the colleges at the undergraduatelevel. Independent Study courses arehonors courses and may be taken onlyby outstanding senior students whohave completed at least one semester inresidence. To be eligible for an Inde-pendent Study course, a student musthave a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or bet-ter in the major or field of specializa-tion.

An Independent Study course is de-signed to provide an opportunity for the

superior senior student or graduate stu-dent to do an original study or investi-gation in the major or field of special-ization on an individual basis with aminimum of supervision or direction.

An Independent Study course is not asubstitute for a catalog course nor ameans of taking a catalog course on anindividual basis. Courses listed in thecatalog may not be taken as Indepen-dent Study.

Application for Independent Studymust be made well in advance of theregular registration period with thestudent’s advisor. The application mustbe signed by the advisor and approvedby the instructor under whom the stu-dent will work and by the chair of thedepartment offering the course. A spe-cial class fee may be required. Thesecourses range in credit from one tothree semester hours.

International Program Courses.Courses with the prefix IPO numbered495 are reserved for Office of Interna-tional Programs Study Abroad and Ex-change Programs. For most programs,participating students register for 18 se-mester hours. Following completion ofan international program, undergradu-ate students receive credit for the studycompleted, with a minimum of 12 se-mester hours and a maximum of 18 se-mester hours, graduates with a mini-mum of six semester hours and a maxi-mum of 12 semester hours.

For some special international pro-grams, students register and receivecredit for fewer semester hours.

Grading SystemDefinition of a Unit of Credit. TheArizona Board of Regents has defined(May 26, 1979) a unit of credit for theinstitutions under its jurisdiction. Aminimum of 45 hours of work by eachstudent is required for each unit ofcredit. An hour of work is the equiva-lent of 50 minutes of class time—oftencalled a “contact hour”—or 60 minutesof independent study work. For lec-ture-discussion courses, this require-ment equates to at least 15 contacthours and a minimum of 30 hours ofwork outside the classroom for eachunit of credit. Even though the valuesof 15 and 30 may vary for differentmodes of instruction, the minimum to-tal of 45 hours of work for each unit ofcredit is a constant. Since the unit ofcredit as defined by the Arizona Boardof Regents is the cornerstone of aca-demic degree programs at ASU, de-grees granted by other institutions thatare recognized by ASU should be basedon a similar unit of credit.

Thestudent is required to arrange with theinstructor for the completion of thecourse requirements. The arrangementis recorded on the Request for Grade ofIncomplete form. The student has onecalendar year from the date the mark of“I” is recorded to complete the course.If the student completes the coursewithin the calendar year, the instructormust submit a Request for Grade of In-complete/Authorization for Change ofGrade form to the Office of the Regis-trar, whether the student passed orfailed the course. Marks of “I” arechanged to a grade of “E” for purposesof evaluating graduation requirementsfor undergraduate students. Marks of“I” received in the fall 1983 semesteror thereafter for undergraduate coursesthat have been on a student’s record formore than one calendar year are auto-matically changed to a grade of “E.”

An undergraduate student does not re-register or pay fees for a course forwhich an incomplete “I” has been re-ceived in order to complete the course.

Students who receive a mark of “I”in courses at the 500 level or abovehave one calendar year to complete thecourse for a grade. After one calendaryear, the mark of “I” becomes a perma-nent part of the transcript. To repeatthe course for credit, a student must re-register and pay fees. The grade for therepeated course appears on the tran-script but does not replace the perma-nent “I.”

Satisfactory. A mark of “Y” (satisfac-tory) may be used at the option of indi-vidual colleges and schools within theuniversity and is appropriate for intern-ships, projects, readings and confer-ences, research, seminars, theses, andworkshops. The “Y” is included inearned hours but is not computed in theGPA.

Credit Enrollment. The semesterhour is the unit on which credit is com-puted. It represents one 50-minuteclass exercise per week per semester.To obtain credit, a student must beproperly registered and must pay feesfor the course.

Audit Enrollment. A student maychoose to audit a course, in which casethe student attends regularly scheduledclass sessions, but no credit is earned.The student should obtain the instruc-tor’s approval before registering andpaying the fees for the course. Selectedcourses may not be audited.

The mark of “X” is recorded forcompletion of an audited course, unlessthe instructor determines that the stu-dent’s participation or attendance hasbeen inadequate, in which case, themark of “W” (unrestricted withdrawal)may be recorded. This grading optionmay not be changed after the close ofdrop/add. The “X” is not included inearned hours and is not computed in theGPA.

Pass/Fail Enrollment. A mark of “P”(pass) or “E” (fail) may be assigned forthis grading option. This gradingmethod may be used at the option of in-dividual colleges and schools withinthe university. Consult the collegedean’s office for detailed informationand restrictions before registration. “P”is included in earned hours but is notcomputed in the GPA.

Remedial Enrollment. A mark of“RC” (remedial credit) or “RN” (reme-dial no credit) may be assigned for thisgrading option. The course appears onan unofficial ASU transcript but doesnot appear on the grade report or offi-cial ASU transcript and is not includedin earned hours. Remedial hours areincluded in verification of enrollmentfor purposes of loan deferment and eli-gibility.

Drop/Add. Students registering forcourses for a semester or summer ses-sion may drop or add courses throughthe first week of classes in a semesteror the first two days of a summer ses-sion. See the Schedule of Classes orSummer Sessions Bulletin for dates ofdrop/add periods. During this period, astudent may drop one or more (but notall) scheduled courses without penalty.Courses that are dropped do not appearon the student’s transcript and fees paidare fully refunded, depending on thestudent’s remaining hours. A studentwho wishes to withdraw from allcourses during the drop/add periodmust process an unrestricted with-drawal.

Unrestricted Course Withdrawal.During the first four weeks of a semes-ter or the first six days of a summersession, a student may withdraw fromany course with a mark of “W.” See theSchedule of Classes or the Summer Ses-sions Bulletin for dates of the unre-stricted withdrawal period.

Restricted Withdrawal. From thefifth week to the end of the 10th weekof a semester and from the seventh dayto the end of the third week of a sum-mer session, students may withdrawwith a mark of “W” from courses onlyin which the instructor certifies thatthey are passing at the time of the with-drawal. See the Schedule of Classes orthe Summer Sessions Bulletin for datesof the restricted withdrawal period.

The number of restricted withdraw-als with the mark of “W” is limited.One restricted withdrawal is assessedfor each course withdrawn from, unlessthe student is withdrawing from allcourses. A complete withdrawal resultsin the assessment of one restrictedwithdrawal against a student’s limit.The number of withdrawals is as fol-lows: during freshman standing, a totalof three; during sophomore standing, atotal of two; during junior and seniorstanding, a total of two; and, during

second undergraduate degree standing,a total of two. Students who havereached their restricted withdrawallimit will not be allowed to process anyadditional restricted course withdraw-als. However, students are allowed toprocess a restricted complete with-drawal even when they have reachedthe restricted withdrawal limit. Thepreceding limits do not prevent stu-dents from processing a complete with-drawal from the university with marksof “W” and/or “E.” Complete with-drawal counts as one withdrawal forpurposes of applying the above limits.The preceding does not apply to auditenrollment or zero-hour labs and recita-tions.

Procedure for RestrictedWithdrawal

1. Obtain a withdrawal form from anyregistrar site.

2. Obtain a signature and verificationof grade from instructor(s).

3. Have the form processed at anyregistrar site.

Instructor-Initiated Withdrawal. Aninstructor may withdraw a student froma course with a mark of “W” or a gradeof “E” only in cases of disruptive class-room behavior. A student may appealan instructor-initiated withdrawal to thestandards committee of the college inwhich the course is offered. The deci-sion of the committee is final. Re-stricted withdrawal limits do not applyto withdrawals initiated by an instruc-tor.

Withdrawal from the University. Inorder to withdraw from all classes afterhaving paid registration fees, a studentmust initiate complete withdrawal fromthe university by appearing in person orby addressing a signed request to theOffice of the Registrar. During the un-restricted complete withdrawal period,a student may withdraw from allcourses with marks of “W.” During therestricted complete withdrawal period,a student may withdraw with marks of“W” only from courses that the instruc-tors certify the student was passing atthe time of withdrawal. See the Sched-ule of Classes or the Summer SessionsBulletin for dates of the complete with-drawal periods. No one is permitted towithdraw from the university or to con-duct any registration transaction in thelast two weeks of the semester. Thedate of the complete withdrawal is al-

ways the date the withdrawal form orletter is received in the Office of theRegistrar.

Medical Withdrawal. Normally, amedical withdrawal request is made incases where serious illness or injuryprevents a student from continuingcourses and incompletes or when otherarrangements with the instructor are notpossible. Consideration is usually forcomplete withdrawal. An applicationfor less than a complete withdrawalmust be well documented to justify theselective nature of the medical with-drawal request. This policy appliesboth to cases involving physical healthproblems and those involving mental oremotional difficulties.

To receive permission for a medicalwithdrawal from courses, a studentmust present a Request for Docu-mented Medical Withdrawal form andproper documentation (usually a letterfrom a physician) of the medical condi-tion to the medical-withdrawal desig-nee of the college of the student’s ma-jor. For complete procedural informa-tion, contact the appropriate medicalwithdrawal designee.

Grade Points. For the purpose ofcomputing the grade point average(GPA), grade points are assigned toeach of the grades for each semesterhour as follows: “A,” four points; “B,”three points; “C,” two points; “D,” onepoint; “E,” zero points. GPAs arerounded to the nearest 100th of a gradepoint.

Grade Point Average. Grade pointsearned for a course are multiplied bythe number of semester hours to pro-duce honor points. For example, re-ceiving an “A,” which is assigned fourgrade points, in a three-semester-hourcourse would produce 12 honor points.The grade point average (GPA) is ob-tained by dividing the total number ofhonor points earned by the total numberof semester hours graded “A,” “B,”“C,” “D,” or “E.” Other grades do notcarry grade points. Semester GPA isbased on semester net hours. Cumula-tive GPA is based on total net hours.

Change of Grade. Ordinarily the in-structor of a course has the sole and fi-nal responsibility for any grade re-ported. Once the grade has been re-ported to the registrar, it may bechanged upon the signed authorizationof the faculty member who issued the

original grade. Approval for thechange is also required by the depart-ment chair and the dean of the collegeconcerned. This policy also applies tothe grade of “I” (incomplete).

University Policy for StudentAppeal Procedures on Grades

InformalThe steps outlined below, beginning

with step A, must be followed by anystudent seeking to appeal a grade. Stu-dent grade appeals must be processedin the regular semester immediatelyfollowing the issuance of the grade indispute (by commencement for fall orspring), regardless of whether the stu-dent is enrolled at the university. It isuniversity policy that students filinggrievances and those who are witnesseswill be protected from retaliation. Stu-dents who believe they are victims ofretaliation should immediately contactthe dean of the college in which thecourse is offered.

A. The aggrieved student must firstundergo the informal procedure ofconferring with the instructor, stat-ing the evidence (if any) and rea-sons for questioning that the gradereceived was not given in goodfaith. The instructor is obliged toreview the matter, explain the grad-ing procedure utilized, and showhow the grade in question was de-termined. If the instructor is agraduate assistant and this inter-view does not resolve the diffi-culty, the student may then go tothe faculty member in charge of thecourse (regular faculty member ordirector of the course sequence)with the problem.

B. If the grading dispute is not re-solved in step A, the student mayappeal to the department chair orother appropriate chair of the areawithin the department (if any). Thedepartment chair may confer withthe instructor to handle the prob-lem. Step B applies only in depart-mentalized colleges.

C. If these discussions are not ad-equate to settle the matter to thecomplainant’s satisfaction, the stu-dent may then confer with the deanof the college concerned (or thedean-designate), who will reviewthe case. If unresolved, the dean ordesignate may refer the case to thecollege academic grievance hearingcommittee to review the case for-

mally. In most instances, however,the grievance procedure will not gobeyond this level.

FormalThe following procedure takes place

after steps A, B, and C (or A and C)have been completed.

D. Each college has on file in the of-fice of the dean (and in each de-partment of the college) the proce-dures and composition of the un-dergraduate or graduate academicgrievance hearing committee forstudent grievances. Each collegecommittee shall operate undergrievance procedures as statedwhich satisfy due process require-ments. The committee shall alwaysmeet with the student and the in-structor in an attempt to resolve thedifferences. At the conclusion ofthe hearing, the committee shallsend its recommendations to thedean.

E. Final action in each case will betaken by the dean after full consid-eration of the committee’s recom-mendation. Grade changes, if anyare recommended, may be made bythe dean. The dean shall informthe student, instructor, departmentchair (if any), the registrar, and thegrievance committee of any actiontaken.

Repeating Courses. An undergraduatecourse taken at ASU may be repeatedfor credit if the grade of “D,” “E,” or“W” or a mark of “X” is received. Un-dergraduate courses in which grades of“D” or “E” are received may be re-peated only once. After an undergradu-ate student repeats 100- and 200-levelcourses, the student’s transcript showsboth grades, but the student’s cumula-tive GPA reflects only the higher grade.After an undergraduate student repeats300- or 400-level courses, the student’scumulative GPA and the transcript re-flect both grades.

After completing the course, the stu-dent must file a Deletion Form with theOffice of the Registrar. To be eligiblefor the deletion of “D” or “E” grades,the course must be repeated at ASU.Students who have graduated are noteligible to delete the grade for a coursetaken before the award of the ASUbachelor’s degree.

This policy does not apply to semi-nar and independent study courses withdifferent content each semester. This

policy affects only undergraduate stu-dents and undergraduate courses.

Demonstration of Mastery. An un-dergraduate student who receives a “D”in a course in which a “C” or better isrequired may use the grade from anequivalent course taken elsewhere todemonstrate mastery at the “C” orhigher level. However, the course mayneither be transferred to ASU (sincecredit has already been given for thecourse) nor computed in the student’sGPA.

Midterm Report. Instructors are re-quired to evaluate students at midtermfor academic progress. A student whohas been evaluated for a “D” or “E” atmid-semester receives a midterm re-port. The midterm “D” and “E” gradesare not recorded on the student’s per-manent record. Midterm reports aremailed to the student’s local address ofrecord.

Final Grade Report. A grade report issent to each student at the end of eachsemester to the permanent address ofrecord. It is the responsibility of thestudent to keep the Office of the Regis-trar informed of address changes.

Records Hold. The Office of the Reg-istrar enforces a financial records holdor administrative hold on the records ofa student when an outstanding financialobligation or disciplinary action hasbeen reported.

When a hold is placed on a record,the following results may occur:

1. No official or unofficial transcriptis issued.

2. Registration privileges are sus-pended.

3. Other student services may be re-voked.

The hold remains effective until re-moved by the initiating office. It is thestudent’s responsibility to clear theconditions causing the hold.

Transcripts. The Office of the Regis-trar releases official transcripts onlyupon the written request of the student.The request must include the followinginformation:

1. the student’s name and formername(s);

2. the student ID number;3. the date of birth; and4. the dates of attendance.

The fee foran official transcript for nonenrolledstudents is $5.00 for the first copy. Thefee is $1.00 per copy for students en-rolled for a current or future semester.Additional copies ordered at the sametime are $1.00 each.

Unofficial transcripts may be re-quested in person at the Office of theRegistrar, any registrar site, or by mailif a signed release is enclosed. There isno charge for an unofficial transcript.

In order to transfer from one collegeto another within the university or to beeligible for readmission, a student musthave a GPA of 2.00 or better. TheGPA determining good standing iscomputed on courses taken only atASU.

For purposes of retention or transfer,an individual college may set higherGPA standards; otherwise, the univer-sity standards prevail. See the collegesections of this catalog or contact thecollege deans’ offices for statements re-garding college retention standards.

Meeting Basic Competencies. Newstudents are required to have completeda specific number of courses in the ar-eas of American history, English, labo-ratory science, mathematics, and socialscience. Students who are exempt fromthese requirements include transfer stu-dents with 36 or more transferable se-mester hours, students admitted byGED, and students who are 22 years ofage or older by the first day of the se-mester. An admitted student whoneeds to meet competencies in one ormore of these areas must satisfy the re-quirement within one year of the begin-ning of his or her first semester at ASU.Subject competencies in each area maybe met by earning a grade of “D” orbetter at ASU in an appropriatecourse(s) as listed in the followingtable:

Appealing Basic Competencies. Astudent who has not met all basic com-petencies at the end of one calendaryear after his or her initial date of en-rollment is not permitted to continue atASU. A student wishing to appeal the dis-missal should submit a petition throughhis or her college. The colleges havethree options in reviewing these ap-peals:

1. extending the student’s end semes-ter to allow one additional semesterto complete the required coursework;

2. allowing the student to substitute acourse not currently approved tofulfill a competency area when anerror has been made in advising orfor other just causes; or

3. denying the petition.

College actions are forwarded to theOffice of the Registrar for processing.

Dean’s List. Undergraduate studentswho earn 12 or more graded semesterhours (“A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “E”) dur-ing a semester in residence at ASUwith a GPA of 3.50 or better are eli-gible for the Dean’s List. A notationregarding Dean’s List achievement ap-pears only on the final grade report forthe semester.

Satisfactory Academic Progress. Theuniversity is required to publish and en-force standards of satisfactory aca-demic progress for certain students(e.g., student athletes, students receiv-ing financial aid, and students receivingveterans benefits).

Certification of satisfactory progressfor student athletes is verified by theacademic advisor and the dean’s desig-nee for certifying satisfactory progress.Certification of satisfactory progressfor students receiving financial aid orveterans benefits is verified by StudentFinancial Assistance or the VeteransServices Section respectively. Studentsshould contact their advisors or the ap-propriate office for additional informa-tion on satisfactory progress require-ments.

Definitions

Eligible Student. For the purpose ofthis act, an eligible student is defined asany individual formally admitted to andenrolled at ASU or the parents of a de-pendent eligible student. Dependencyis defined by Section 152 of the Inter-nal Revenue Code of 1954.

Record. The term record includes anyinformation or data recorded in any me-dium, including, but not limited to,handwriting, print, tapes, film, micro-film, microfiche, and electronic means.

Types of Information

Educational Record. The term educa-tional record refers to those records di-rectly related to a student and main-tained by an educational institution.Two types of educational records aresubject to the provisions of this act: (1)directory information and (2) person-ally identifiable information. The termdoes not include those records specifi-cally excluded by Section 99.3 of theprivacy act.

Directory Information. The term di-rectory information includes the fol-lowing student information: name, lo-cal and permanent addresses, local tele-phone number, date and place of birth,citizenship, residency status, academiclevel, major field of study, college ofenrollment, participation in officiallyrecognized activities and sports, weightand height of members of athleticteams, dates of attendance, degrees andawards received, and the most recentprevious educational agency or institu-tion attended by the student.

Personally Identifiable Information.The term personally identifiable infor-mation includes the name of a student’sparent or other family member(s), apersonal identifier such as the student’sSocial Security number, a list of per-sonal characteristics, or other informa-tion that would make the student’sidentity easily traceable and any infor-mation, including directory informa-tion, that the student has indicated willnot be released.

Access to RecordsAn eligible student or a parent of a

dependent eligible student may inspectand review the student’s educationalrecords. Some form of photo identifi-cation must be displayed before accessto educational records is allowed.

Student RecordsFamily Educational Rights andPrivacy Act of 1974

This act, known as the BuckleyAmendment, sets forth the requirementsgoverning the protection of the privacyof the educational records of studentswho are or have been in attendance atASU.

Student Academic Complaints. If astudent is dissatisfied with the instruc-tion received in a class or with the in-teraction with the instructor of theclass, the student may pursue the fol-lowing avenues in the order listed:

1. The student may discuss the com-plaint with the instructor of theclass.

2. If the issue is not resolved at thislevel, the student may contact thechair of the department in whichthe course is offered.

3. If further discussion and/or appealis needed, the student may contactthe dean of the college in which thecourse is offered.

Probation. A student’s college as-sumes responsibility for enforcing aca-demic standards and may place any stu-dent on probation who has failed tomaintain good standing as previouslydefined. For purposes of probation andretention, an individual college may sethigher GPA standards. A student onacademic probation is required to ob-serve any rules or limitations the col-lege may impose as a condition for re-tention.

Disqualification. A student who isplaced on probation at the end of a se-mester is subject to disqualification bythe college at the end of the followingsemester if the conditions imposed forretention are not met.

Disqualification is exercised at thediscretion of the college and becomeseffective on the first day of the semes-ter following college action. A dis-qualified student is notified by the deanof the college and/or the Office of theRegistrar and is not allowed to registerin a fall or spring semester at the uni-versity until reinstated. A student whohas been disqualified may appeal to thecollege standards committee. A studentwho is disqualified may not attend as anondegree student.

Reinstatement. If a student with aGPA of 2.00 or greater has been dis-qualified by one college and seeks totransfer to another college at ASU, thestudent may apply at the ReadmissionsSection (SSV B114) or directly to thecollege to which the student wishes andis qualified to transfer.

To be reinstated into an ASU collegeother than the disqualifying college, thestudent must submit an application forreinstatement to the University Under-graduate Admissions Board through the

Readmissions Section of the Office ofthe Registrar.

To be reinstated into the same col-lege from which the student was dis-qualified, the student must submit anapplication for reinstatement to the dis-qualifying college. When reinstate-ment includes readmission, applicationmust be made to the Readmissions Sec-tion of the Office of the Registrar.

Reinstatement Appeals. A studentwishing to appeal the decision of thestandards committee of a college maysubmit an appeal to the University Un-dergraduate Admissions Board. Thedecision of the board is final.

Academic Integrity. The highest stan-dards of academic integrity are ex-pected of all students. The failure ofany student to meet these standardsmay result in suspension or expulsionfrom the university and/or other sanc-tions as specified in the academic integ-rity policies of the individual colleges.Violations of academic integrity in-clude, but are not limited to, cheating,fabrication, tampering, plagiarism, orfacilitating such activities. The univer-sity and college academic integritypolicies are available from the Office ofthe Senior Vice President and Provostand from the deans of the individualcolleges.

Suspension or Expulsion for Aca-demic Dishonesty. All decisions relat-ing to expulsion or suspension that areconcerned with academic dishonestyare the sole prerogative of the dean ofthe school or college in which the stu-dent has been admitted. These deci-sions of suspension or expulsion can beappealed in accordance with estab-lished university procedures. Applica-tion for reinstatement may be made toany of the academic units within theuniversity after the specified period ofsuspension. Merely having remained ina suspended status for a period of timedoes not, in itself, constitute a basis forreinstatement.

Directory information may be re-leased to anyone without consent of thestudent unless the student has indicatedotherwise. Students may request thatthis information not be released bycompleting a form in the Office of theRegistrar. A request to withhold thisinformation excludes the student frombeing listed in the annual directory onlyif the request is submitted to the Officeof the Registrar before the end of thethird week of the fall semester.

All other educational records thatcontain personally identifiable informa-tion may not be released without thewritten consent of the student. A par-ent of a dependent student may chal-lenge denial of such access by produc-ing the most current copy of InternalRevenue Form 1040. If that form liststhe student in question as a dependent,the parent is required to sign an affida-vit that affirms that the student is his orher dependent. The affidavit is retainedby the Office of the Registrar. Uponreceipt of the affidavit, the universitymakes student records available to theparent for the rest of that calendar yearas specified under the Buckley Amend-ment.

studies courses. The required distribu-tion of general studies courses amongthe core areas and awareness areas isdescribed below. It is important to notethat 35 semester hours must be taken inthe five core areas. Fulfillment of therequirements in global awareness, his-torical awareness, and cultural diver-sity does not oblige the student to ex-ceed the 35-semester-hour total since alarge number of approved courseswithin the five core areas concurrentlysatisfy the three awareness require-ments.

Although a course may satisfy a corearea requirement and an awareness arearequirement concurrently, a course maynot be used to satisfy requirements intwo core areas simultaneously or intwo awareness areas, even if it is ap-proved for those areas. With depart-mental consent, an approved generalstudies course may be counted towardboth the general studies requirementsand the major program of study. Stu-dents transferring from approved insti-tutions of higher education ordinarilyare given general studies credit, hourfor hour, for work done in those institu-tions insofar as it is equivalent in con-tent to general studies courses at thisuniversity.

Specific patterns of general studiesrequirements are established by the col-leges within the overall program. First-Year Composition is a university re-quirement of all students that isseparate from and in addition to theGeneral Studies Program.

CORE AREAS

Literacy and Critical InquiryLiteracy is here defined broadly as

communicative competence in writtenand oral discourse; critical inquiry isdefined as the gathering, interpretation,and evaluation of evidence. Buildingon the proficiency attained in tradi-tional freshman composition courses,the literacy and critical inquiry require-ments help students sustain and extendtheir ability to reason critically andcommunicate clearly through language.Thus, the literacy and critical inquiryrequirement stipulates a sequence oftwo courses beyond First-Year Compo-sition.

Requirement. Six semester hours arerequired. One L1 course is required,typically at the sophomore level, inwhich students learn how to gather, in-terpret, and evaluate evidence and to

University GeneralStudies ProgramRequirements

The General Studies Program isbased on four principles. The first isthe distinction between skill andknowledge—the instrumental skills bymeans of which knowledge is acquiredand communicated and the knowledgeitself in the sense of fact, information,or conclusions. Second is the distinc-tion between skill in the use of lan-guage and skill in the use of figures—literacy and numeracy. Third is the

conventional division of knowledgeinto the humanities, the social sciences,and the natural sciences. And fourth isthe concept of the university graduateas a person who is not only preparedfor advanced study or a particular pro-fession, but also is amply prepared tolead a constructive and satisfying per-sonal, social, and civic or political life.This principle implies a commonalityof knowledge (that is, knowledgeshared with others), skill in learningand in communicating with others, anda diversity of learning that frees theperson to enjoy the diversity of humanpotentiality. In addition to the fourprinciples, the program recognizes thevalue of sustained experience in the ac-quisition of a skill or the mastery of abody of knowledge, the increasing im-portance of literacy and numeracyskills because of the rapid growth ofmodern knowledge, the utility of his-torical perspective, and the internation-alization of modern life.

The General Studies Program con-sists of five core areas and threeawareness areas. The core areas are asfollows:

1. literacy and critical inquiry;2. numeracy;3. humanities and fine arts;4. social and behavioral sciences; and5. natural sciences.

These areas provide training in basicacademic skills and assure that studentsare introduced to the traditionalbranches of knowledge.

The three awareness areas are asfollows:

1. cultural diversity in the UnitedStates;

2. global awareness; and3. historical awareness.

These contribute to the developmentof an international perspective, fosteran understanding of current humanevents by study of the past, and pro-motes appreciation of cultural diversitywithin the contemporary United States.

The courses approved by the Univer-sity General Studies Council for meet-ing general studies requirements arenoted in the General Catalog followingthis section, in the course descriptions,and in the Schedule of Classes eachacademic term. All students enrolled ina baccalaureate degree program mustsuccessfully complete a minimum of 35semester hours of approved general

express their findings in writing orspeech. This course includes a series offormal, graded, and written or spokenassignments.

One L2 upper-division course is re-quired with advanced subject-matterand rigorous critical-writing assign-ments. The course should be taken inthe student’s major discipline and mayalso count toward the major.

NumeracyThe numeracy requirement is in-

tended to ensure that students have skillin basic mathematics, can use math-ematical analysis in their chosen fields,and can understand how computers canmake mathematical analysis more pow-erful and efficient. Numeracy thus hasthree components. First, the acquisi-tion of essential skill in basic math-ematics requires the student to com-plete a course in college algebra or todemonstrate a higher level of skill bycompleting a course for which collegealgebra is a prerequisite. The secondcomponent, the real-world applicationof mathematical reasoning, requires thestudent to take a course in the use ofquantitative analysis to solve problemsof substance. Many students may usecourses in statistics to satisfy this re-quirement. The third component ofnumeracy requires use of the computerto assist in serious analytical work.Computers are widely used to study theimplications of social decisions or tomodel physical systems, and computermodeling courses are available in manymajor programs.

Requirement. Six semester hours arerequired. One course must be selectedfrom the mathematics category; a sec-ond course must be selected from eitherof the remaining two categories listedbelow. However, if competence isdemonstrated in college algebra bypassing an exemption examination, sixsemester hours are still required, andone course in the mathematics categorythat has College Algebra as a prerequi-site may be selected, or all six semesterhours may be taken in one or both ofthe two remaining categories.

1. Mathematics. A course in collegealgebra (i.e., MAT 117) or anyother mathematics course for whichcollege algebra is a prerequisite fitsthis category.

2. Statistics and Quantitative Reason-ing. Courses that emphasize theuse of statistics or other mathemati-

cal methods in the interpretation ofdata and in describing and under-standing quantitative relationshipsfit this category. The course se-lected can be taken in the student’smajor discipline and can count to-ward the major’s semester-hour re-quirements.

3. Computer Applications. Coursesthat involve the use of computerprogramming languages or soft-ware in the development of skills inanalytical thinking fit this category.The course selected can be taken inthe student’s major discipline andcan count toward the major’s se-mester-hour requirements.

Humanities and Fine ArtsThe humanities are concerned with

questions of human existence and theuniversality of human life, questions ofmeaning and the nature of thinking andknowing, and questions of moral, aes-thetic, and other human values. Thehumanities investigate these questionsin both the present and the past andmake use of philosophy, foreign lan-guages, linguistics and communicationstudies, religious studies, literature, andfine arts. The fine arts constitute theartist’s creative deliberation about real-ity, meaning, knowledge, and values.The humanities and fine arts core areaenables students to broaden and deepentheir consideration of basic human val-ues and their interpretation of the expe-riences of human beings.

Social and Behavioral SciencesThe social and behavioral sciences

provide scientific methods of inquiryand empirical knowledge about humanbehavior, both within society and indi-vidually. The forms of study may becultural, economic, geographic, histori-cal, linguistic, political, psychological,or social. The courses in this area ad-dress the challenge of understandingthe diverse natures of individuals andcultural groups who live together in aworld of diminishing economic, lin-guistic, military, political, and socialdistance.

Combined Requirement. A total of15 semester hours must be completed inthe following two core areas: socialand behavioral sciences and humani-ties and fine arts. A minimum of six se-mester hours must be taken in one core

area and nine hours in the other corearea. In addition, three conditionsmust be satisfied:

1. In one of these two core areas, twocourses must be in the same depart-ment.

2. In one of these two core areas,courses from at least two depart-ments must be taken. These twoconditions may, but need not, besatisfied in the same core area.

3. At least one course within the 15semester hours must be at the up-per-division level.

Natural SciencesCourses in the natural sciences core

area help the student to develop an ap-preciation of the scope and limitationsof scientific capability to contribute tothe quality of society. Knowledge ofmethods of scientific inquiry and mas-tery of basic scientific principles andconcepts, in particular those that relateto matter and energy in living and non-living systems, are stressed. Firsthandexposure to scientific phenomena in thelaboratory is important in developingand understanding the concepts, prin-ciples, and vocabulary of science. Atleast one of the two laboratory coursesrequired in the natural sciences corearea must include an introduction to thefundamental behavior of matter and en-ergy in physical or biological systems.

Requirement. Eight semester hoursare required. One laboratory course inthe natural sciences that includes a sub-stantial introduction to the fundamentalbehavior of matter and energy in physi-cal or biological systems is required.

A second laboratory course in thenatural sciences selected, for example,from anthropology, astronomy, botany,chemistry, experimental psychology,geology, microbiology, physical an-thropology, physical geography, phys-ics, or zoology is required.

AWARENESS AREAS

Six semester hours taken in two ofthe three awareness areas are required.Courses that are listed for a core and anawareness area may satisfy both re-quirements concurrently.

Cultural Diversity in theUnited States

The contemporary “culture” of theUnited States involves the complex in-terplay of many different cultures thatexist side by side in various states of

harmony and conflict. The U.S. historyinvolves the experiences not only ofdifferent groups of European immi-grants and their descendants, but alsoof diverse groups of American Indians,Hispanic Americans, African Ameri-cans, and Asian Americans—all ofwhom played significant roles in thedevelopment of contemporary cultureand together shape the future of theUnited States. At the same time, therecognition that gender, class, and reli-gious differences cut across all distinc-tions of race and ethnicity offers aneven richer variety of perspectives fromwhich to view oneself. Awareness ofcultural diversity and its multiplesources can illuminate the collectivepast, present, and future and can help toachieve greater mutual understandingand respect.

The objective of the cultural diver-sity requirement is to promote aware-ness and appreciation of cultural diver-sity within the contemporary UnitedStates through the study of the cultural,social, or scientific contributions ofwomen and minority groups, examina-tion of their experiences in the UnitedStates, or exploration of successful orunsuccessful interactions between andamong cultural groups.

Global AwarenessHuman organizations and relation-

ships have evolved from being familyand village centered to the modern glo-bal interdependence that is apparent inmany disciplines—for example, con-temporary art, business, engineering,music, and the natural and social sci-ences. Many serious local and nationalproblems are world issues and requiresolutions that exhibit mutuality andreciprocity. These problems occur in awide variety of activities, such as foodsupply, ecology, health care delivery,language planning, information ex-change, economic and social develop-ments, law, technology transfer, andeven philosophy and the arts. The glo-bal awareness area recognizes the needfor an understanding of the values, ele-ments, and social processes of culturesother than the culture of the UnitedStates. The global awareness area in-cludes courses that recognize the natureof other contemporary cultures and therelationship of the American culturalsystem to generic human goals andwelfare.

Courses that meet the requirement inglobal awareness are of one or more ofthe following types:

1. area studies that are concerned withan examination of culture-specificelements of a region of the world;

2. the study of foreign language;3. studies of international relation-

ships, particularly those in whichcultural change is facilitated bysuch factors as social and economicdevelopment, education, and thetransfer of technology; and

4. studies of cultural interrelation-ships of global scope such as theglobal interdependence producedby problems of world ecology.

Historical AwarenessThe historical awareness area aims to

develop a knowledge of the past thatcan be useful in shaping the present andfuture. Because historical forces andtraditions have created modern life andlie just beneath its surface, historicalawareness is an aid in the analysis ofpresent-day problems. Also, becausethe historical past is a source of socialand national identity, historical studycan produce intercultural understandingby tracing cultural differences to theirorigins in the past. Even the remotepast may have instructive analogies forthe present.

The historical awareness area con-sists of courses that are historical inmethod and content. In this area, theterm “history” designates a sequence ofpast events or a narrative whose intentor effect is to represent such a se-quence. The requirement presumes thatthese are human events and that historyincludes all that has been felt, thought,imagined, said, and done by human be-ings. History is present in the lan-guages, art, music, literature, philoso-phy, religion, and the natural sciences,as well as in the social science tradi-tionally called history.

GENERAL STUDIES COURSES

The following general studiescourses satisfy the requirements of thefive core areas and three awareness ar-eas. Students should note that this listincludes courses approved for generalstudies credit as of spring semester1994. Since courses are occasionallyadded to and deleted from the list, stu-dents should always consult the Sched-ule of Classes each semester to see

which courses currently meet generalstudies requirements.

A student receives the general stud-ies credit a course carries in the semes-ter in which the course is taken, withone exception: a course listed on anapproved program of study but subse-quently deleted from the general stud-ies list retains the general studies creditit carried when the program of studywas approved.

Under each core and awareness area,courses are presented alphabetically bycollege name and by course prefix.The course prefix is followed by coursenumber and course title. The numberin parentheses following the course titleindicates the semester hours of credit.The letter following the semester hoursof credit indicates when the course willbe offered. See “Key to Course ListingCodes” on page 45.

General studies courses are regularlyreviewed. The following table, “Key toGeneral Studies Credit Abbreviations,”identifies which requirement(s) thecourse meets. This key is also used inthe Schedule of Classes. General stud-ies courses are also identified followingcourse descriptions.
